This is the best Ina yet. I simply open up to a page and cook whatever recipe is on that page. I was worried the recipes would be too complicated or expensive to make, they are not. Most of the ingredients I already had in my pantry. I will be giving copies away for Christmas presents. Beautiful pictures.

I started making some of the recipies the next day after recieving the book. It is a must have in any kitchen. Things can be combined and modified easily depending on what you might already have in the house. You will love this book...
This book is very user friendly for someone new to cooking or a seasoned chef. I simply can't purchase a cook book without colorful illustrations and this one has plenty of them with big bold pictures of dishes that look delicious but very doable. The recipes are simple yet flavorful -restaurant worthy. Ina gives a nice explanation of why she uses certain spices or specific types of cooking for her recipes. The one point she drives home well is that it is always that last dash of salt or herbs that you throw in right before serving that seems to kick up the flavor and that is one thing I love about Ina's recipes - they are full of flavor. I haven't had the chance to try many of them yet but the ones I have tried so far have been a great success. I would recommend this as a gift for anyone who is learning to cook as well as someone who simply loves to cook.

This was my second cookbook by Ina Garten, and it certainly will not be my last. Most recipes in this cookbook are very good and a few are exceptional. Several recipes are also easy to put together on a weeknight, which I find immensely helpful. Among the standouts in this cookbook is the French apple tart-- easy to make, visually appealing, easy on the budget and absolutely delicious. I also love her baked shrimp scampi and roasted vegetables-- roasting does bring out maximum flavor.
Other recipes are not as spectacular, but definitely worth a try. She does tend to be heavy-handed with butter and/or cream. For instance, I thought the mustard-roasted fish had too much creme fraiche, which detracts from the integrity of the fish and clarity of flavor. I also find it strange that she lists measurements for salt and pepper. I much prefer the principle followed by Judy Rodgers and Suzanne Goin-- taste as you cook, season to your preference. Nonetheless, this cookbook is well worth the money.

I waited eagerly for this new book by Ina Garten. I can say that I really love this book. Back to Basics takes ordinary ingredidents and transforms them into something special. This new book is broken down into sections. You have sections on drinks,breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also vegetables, desserts and soup. You can learn new ideas if you cook already. If you are new to cooking thats fine too. Some recpipes do require some time but its not over the top. With practice you can master these dishes. She offers different ideas on classic dishes such has potato leek soup, pot roast and oven roasted vegetables. The book is full of lovely photographs and cooking tips from Ms. Garten.
