I have an older edition of Joy of Cooking, and wanted to give my daughter a copy of this cookbook because it is such a comprehensive cookbook; however, I was not as pleased with this anniversary edition as with my older version. Perhaps, I just do not adapt to "change" - perhaps she will enjoy the newer edition.

This excellent, comprehensive American cookbook is recommended for novices and experienced cooks alike. I bought this copy for my college aged daughter.

This is the best overall reference book for cooks from beginners to experts. It includes information about food types, safety in food preparation, a description of tools needed to make specific dishes, sample menus,...the answer to just about any question one might have. This is the one book to have on the kitchen shelf.

Even though I have seen this book around all my life I never had the desire to buy one until I watched Julie and Julia. This book is not only full of recipes but also full of information that any and every cook needs. I was very impressed with it and wondered why I waited so long to have my own copy. It took me nearly a week and a half to read through the information, skimming over what I don't normally use or need. Lots of traditional recipes and new ones as well. I am not disappointed with this purchase

I am someone who loves food and loves to cook. I grew up helping my parents in the kitchen and cooking as always been a very social and fun part of my life. I often pull recipes off the web or make up my own creations. It's fun to try new things that way but even with rave reviews posted, sometimes I wonder how reliable recipes online are. There is something about the Joy of COokign that feels tried, tested and true. This is the book I turn to for basic guidance on making ANYTHING. The recipes are not necessarily dazzling or mind-blowing but they work. I often use the recipes as a starting point, then I modify as I see fit to give my dishes a little more punch. It's like an encyclopedia on cooking. It even talks about methods and techniques as well as meat selection etc. It's a great reference in the kitchen. AND, sometimes its just more fun to cook from a book than some floating print-out from the computer. You even get a nice ribbon bookmark to keep track of whatever page you last referenced, a small but nice touch.
