Initially, I hesitated to switch from traditional film to digital out of fear that a new camera would be too complicated or difficult to understand. This Canon has proven to be incredibly simple to use and the picture quality is sensational.
For those looking for a camera that requires you to do nothing more than point and shoot, this one is the perfect choice. All you have to do is set it to "Auto," and the Canon PowerShot SD 1200IS takes care of everything. On the other hand, if you are a person who prefers to make your own adjustments and settings, that's also simple to do. Menus are clear, logical and easy to understand.
One of the very best features of this Canon is the viewfinder. I can't believe so many other digital cameras lack this extremely useful tool. A hobby I enjoy requires me to be able to take several hundred outdoor pictures in a single day without access to a battery charger. With this Canon, I can turn off the LCD screen and save battery power by simply using the viewfinder instead. Over the past ten days, I have taken more than 1000 pictures (all outdoors, no flash, without using the LCD screen) on a single battery charge. Hard to believe, but the battery still isn't depleted.
Picture quality has been absolutely outstanding. While most of the pictures I've taken so far have been outdoors, even under damp, cloudy conditions the pictures have been clear and crisp. I have taken quite a few pictures indoors with equally impressive results. Even pictures taken of a jack-o-lantern at night, with the flash turned off, turned out perfect, too.
I would highly recommend the Canon PowerShot SD 1200 IS to anyone looking for a reasonably priced digital camera that is extremely simple to use and yet loaded with great features. |

"The best camera is the one you have with you" | 2009-11-13 |

This is, overall, a remarkable camera for the size and price. Wide aperture photography in reasonable lighting is where this excels, such as what you get in portrait mode. Unfortunately, the size of the camera means some very strict limitations in the conditions under which you can get good photos. The aperture at high f/# (i.e. when the aperture is stopped down to let less light in) is so small that you get noticeable diffractive blurring. Take a picture in landscape scene mode outside on a sunny day (which stops down the lens to increase depth of field) and you'll notice a certain fuzziness to the picture due to the small aperture.
Another problem area in the camera is in the auto mode. For reasons I still haven't figured out, while the camera seems to do a great job picking out the correct mode (i.e. portrait versus outdoor) the results in auto are almost never as good as if you just leave it in P (program) mode. For some reason auto mode often results in overexposure and too high an ISO setting.
Despite the photo quality limitations, many of which are unavoidable on a camera of this size, this is a suburb camera. As they say, the best camera is the one you have with you, and the compact stature of this camera means that more often than not, this will be the best camera. |

| This camera is an upgrade from an earlier version. I keep this camera in the bottom of my purse and take it out whenever the need arises. Takes great little videos and easily switches modes quickly while your pointing to shoot. A definite must for Moms on the go and people who don't usually take pictures because its so easy to use. The 8GB card is an essential addition. Honestly, you'll love it. |

| The Canon Powershot is so easy to use - I love the Auto settings pictures come out great! When I have more time, I will play around with more of the features, but for now - I'm loving the ease of pointing and clicking away. I especially love the image stabilizer as most of my pictures are of my very active 3.5 year old! |

| My wife and I were looking for a smaller camera to take with us on vacation. We purchased this camera and couldn't be happier. It is small emough to fit into a pocket so carrying it around was never a burden. The point and shoot capabilities are really great. We were in Cabo and this camera took great pictures no matter what the lighting was. The video record feature is excellent and we got some great footage of the waves crashing in. I had previously never had a camera with face detection and have found this feature invaluable. Still playing around with everything this camera has to offer. Stick with Cannon they make a great product. |
