| Sure after reading your reviews from 2000.....9 years later dreamcast is dead. Sure it was an awesome system and had an untimely demise but ps2 certainly surprassed this system and now we are in the next/ next generation of consoles. I loved Shenmue and sonic adventure but for some reason this system didnt take off. Ashame too.... |

"Sega's Best System Ever!" | 2009-09-01 |

Well, I'm a little embarrassed to say that I just got a Dreamcast about a week ago,but still have vivid memories of all the commercials that were played and watching my babysitter at the time play it constantly until the PS2 came out. I'm going to review the system in parts because there is just so much to cover that it needs to be broken down.
The System: The Dreamcast itself is very small,it's not as long as the original PS1 but it sits a little bit higher. Overall it looks very nice,Pictures don't do it justice,it needs to be seen in person. The Dreamcast's power light is also very unique, instead of being the usual green color, its orange (it's supposedly a very lucky color in Japan.) It also has 4 controller ports, and the usual hookup plugs in the back.
The Controller: The controller is sort of a hit and miss,it looks really cool. But it's lacking in the button department,it has 4 face buttons, one analog stick,D-pad,and 2 triggers. Now the problem is the Dreamcast controller needed either another analog stick or 2 more shoulder buttons. I have a very good feeling if the Dreamcast would have been in the market longer it would have seen a redesigned controller. Not the worst controller, but not the best,It gets bonus points for possibly being the coolest looking controller I've seen.
The Visual Memory Unit (VMU): The VMU is quite possibly the most unique memory card I have ever seen,it has a screen a D-Pad,sleep button, mode button, and 2 face buttons. While your playing a game it displays either what game your playing, your health,or to choose plays in football, every game does different things. Some games even have mini games you can download onto the VMU. There are some downsides to the VMU and the number one thing is battery life,it takes 2 watch batteries that cost $5 a piece, here is the kicker, they don't last long at all! It would have been smarter to just make the VMU use 2 AA batteries instead, they are much cheaper and would have probably lasted longer (rechargeable would have lasted much longer). And the number 2 downside is the memory on the card is small! Only 200KB available for use (there is a way to unlock 44KB more) if your playing a sport game it can take as much as 164KB! Most games will only use 4-60KB's depending.
Games:This is a high point for the DC,at the time it had some of the best games for all genres listing them all would take up way to much space. It is unfortunate that most of the Dreamcasts best games have been ported to either PS2,Xbox,or GC. But there is something about playing the original that makes the games seem so much better on Dreamcast. I'm going to list the pros and cons of the system:
Pros:
+You can still buy NEW Dreamcasts for $100
+Controllers/VMU's are a dime a dozen
+Games are cheap and can still be bought NEW
+Very nice design
+Reliable as long as you play legit software (Tip:CD-R's will burn out your Dreamcast laser)
+Awesome memory card
Cons:
-VMU's use expensive batteries that don't last
-Controller needs more buttons |

| When I originally saw Sega's Dreamcast in action, the day it launched on September 9, 1999, I remember thinking "Finally, a home console with high quality 3D graphics that are worth admiring". Up to that point in time, no previous video game system had the polygonal pumping power or blazing speed of Sega's Dreamcast required to produce the spectacular and wondrous visuals that countless people around the globe had been enjoying for years. Though Nintendo's 64-bit behemoth, along with Sony's colossally popular Playstation were admirable machines with extremely solid and respectable game libraries, but neither came swaggering out of the corner, swinging furiously, increasing the stakes like the Dreamcast. While classic launch titles like `Soul Calibur', `Sonic Adventure', `Power Stone', `Crazy Taxi', `Hydro Thunder', `Marvel vs. Capcom: New Age of Heroes' and `NFL 2K' showcased the Dreamcasts impressive, jaw dropping graphical capabilities; it was another launch title by Sega, `Chu Chu Rocket' that reminded the world what helped make the Dreamcast an important part of gaming history. Granted you had to subscribe to SegaNet to take advantage of this heralded feature, but now a person was not only able surf the World Wide Web with their Sega Dreamcast, using the included browser disc and integrated 56k modem, but could also play games online; a realm that was previously exclusive to P.C. gamers. Sega's console is a rock solid and attractive unit that is pleasing to behold and was built to last a long time. The Dreamcast controller is similarly well designed and assembled. It's comfortable to handle for numerous hours, making it a perfect for weekend long gaming marathons. The buttons are well laid out and colorful, opposite of the analog thumb stick, which is positioned above the D-pad, with index finger triggers on the underside. It also has two expansion slots to accommodate accessories like `Visual Memory Units', and a `Rumble Pack'. The only strange thing about the Dreamcast's controller is that the cord is connected at the bottom, but can conveniently be secured forward on the underside of the unit. The `Visual Memory Unit' resembles a miniaturized version of Nintendo's original Gameboy, with a monochrome LCD screen, positioned above the D-pad, which was next to the `Start', `Select' `A', and B' buttons. Not only could this little marvel save vital game data, but it could enhance them in numerous ways too. This could be a mini game, like `Pinta's Quest' on `Skies of Arcadia' or displaying play calls on Sega's awesome 2K sport games. Sega had a smash hit on its hands with the Dreamcast, but it wouldn't have been worth anything if there wasn't quality software that took advantage of the systems powerful, cutting edge hardware that was genuinely enjoyable to play. Luckily, the Dreamcast amassed an admirable collection of classic and beloved games to build a strong library that proudly endures today. The previously mentioned titles are only a brief taste of the hours of fun and adventure that awaits the owner of a Sega Dreamcast. Other classic platters like: `Grandia II', `Jet Grind Radio', `Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver', `Phantasy Star Online', `Space Channel 5', `Shenmue' , `Metropolis Street Racer', `Virtual Tennis' and countless other great games are waiting to be discovered on the Sega Dreamcast. Nearly a decade since it debuted in North America, it's still thinking, keeping a firm hold of gamer's hearts and imaginations. |

after the fantastic Saturn, sega took a break and started to develop a system to go head to head with Sony's upcoming Playstation 2 system.
the result was the sega dreamcast, and it was incredible. the Dreamcast was a marvel of processing power and high quality graphics.. which to the average gamer means ..a powerhouse in consoles, and more important excellent games to come your way.
the dreamcast had a unique analog controler similar to the N64 but it felt better in the players hands and was more comfortable. i prefered this controller myself.
you could also have internet access just like the sega saturn..which was also a plus..keep in mind this is way before Microsoft's xbox live service and sony's playstation online network folks!
the graphics were stunning..games like marvel vs capcom, sonic, air force delta, spawn, virtua fighter amoung others really stand up even today.
this all changed when the sony playstation 2 came out then sega once again felt sonys bite..but they didnt give up the made extra add ons and more exclusives but this still wasnt enough...
all said and done though..the Dreamcast was the final entry into segas console fleet..and it was a GREAT addition.. its still fun to play with today..if your a collector i highly recomment grabbing one..
ITS THINKING....love that tagline they used :) |
