"Good for the price" | 2009-11-17 |

I purchased this unit for my Wife because she is from abroad and was not used to American roads. I wanted the lane guidance feature to help her out. With just a little instruction she was up and running and it has proved to be an invaluable tool for her use.
The only issues so far have been the nifty mounting feature. It is sometimes very easy to pop the unit out of it when trying to adjust it for a better view. It also took some getting used to in order to get the suction cup to work. It is great to have it built-in because when it is removed the whole thing can easily fit into her smallest purse and is easily portable.
For the price, it is a great little unit and I am very happy with it and the confidence it gives to my Wife as she sets out on her own to run errands.
The only addition I would give to any GPS unit is the ability to announce that the next street is a one way and make the turn after that street :) |

I bought this TOMTOM for my daughter. Setup was quick and easy. It worked right out of the box but I downloaded and installed the TOMTOM Home software on her Mac to take advantage of TOMTOM's latest map guarantee. When the unit connected to the computer I was offered the latest map. My only complaint here is that it took several hours, even over a high speed internet connection, to download. The new map installed and the 340s was again ready to use.
It has a full range of features from points of interests to Advanced Lane Guidance. Amazon had a great price, too, $149.00! The same unit was selling for $229.00 in Best Buy and Target stores. |

"Poor Packaging, Good product" | 2009-11-05 |

Consider buying elsewhere. Our device came jiggling around the box. The "air bubble" packaging did not stay sealed and was basically a piece of cheap plastic providing no padding whatsoever to our device. We realize this is more of Amazon.com review and not of the product, but buyers beware.
Now for the product:
Thankfully, it was in working order.
Can't comment on the upgraded maps.
* One design issue we dislike is the volume control. It is controlled by the touch screen. It is very easy to hit that part of the screen (bottom left) and simultaneously scroll the volume all the way to 0% (on the left side of the sliding bar, of course)...not good on a busy road in an unfamiliar area! A better design would be to have a physical wheel on the side of the device for volume.
* The itinerary planning allows you to list the places and arrange the order of navigation. Perhaps we don't know how but it won't route out what is best mileage-saving wise...only in the order manually directed.
* Voice-to-speech isn't the best with pronunciation but it's better than having nothing.
* You may have to glance at the screen when a turn comes near to make the correct turn. Otherwise if you wait for instruction audibly, it often says "turn here" when you are nearly in the intersection--one should already be in the turn lane and turning. (The warning previous to this one is at a quarter mile before the turn).
* Wide screen is very nice- highly recommend.
* Satellites do take a few minutes to get locked in for the GPS signal (to reiterate other users).
* Sometimes the maps aren't perfect and directions can get confusing if it thinks you have gone off road...again, you may need to glance at the screen a lot to confirm turns (you may be driving down main street and the next turn is a right turn, but it thinks you've gone off-road and tells you to turn left in order to get back on main street first)
* Sometimes the name of the street of the next turn is shown at the top of the screen (which I like), sometimes it is not displayed (grr). It is at random.
Overall, at a good sale price, a very great value and very functional and helpful device, with a few quirks here and there.

"Tom Tom GPS" | 2009-10-25 |

| I bought the TOM TOM xl 340-S for a birthday present for my husband. We travel to Mexico each year by car and the Mexican feature was the deciding factor in this model. We have only had it three weeks so I can't comment on the Mexican component - we are leaving in a week. It was easy to install and each to use. It has the advantage of rerouting if we chose a shorter and more direct route. We haven't had it long enough to provide more information but based on the first few weeks we like it and it worked right out of the box. |

After reading the reviews I was super nervous to have my hubby get this for my birthday gift. However, I really liked all the features, so we went ahead and ordered it. He likes his tomtom and has been using it for a year with no problems so I felt we could trust the brand. Anyway, here are my thoughts:
The larger screen, while something I initially didn't think was a huge deal, is great to have.
I really like the spoken street names, though it's a bummer there aren't more voices that work with that feature.
The advanced lane guidance is another feature I wanted that works great. I'd sometimes get confused with our older tomtom, not understanding where I should be on the highway with merging and exits, and that is no longer an issue. The visual helps make the spoken directions crystal clear.
I'm not totally sold on the IQ routes. I've not yet used the GPS on unfamiliar roads and at times it suggests strange ways to get places, possibly to avoid left turns, but I'm not sure. I've since changed the settings so it always asks me what kind of route I want to follow, as sometimes the shortest route is better. Not to say the IQ routes are a bad feature, but not always the best option.
Sometimes the GPS does take a few minutes to find a signal, and once in a while turning it off and on again helps speed that up, but cell phones do the same thing when you turn them off and on so it's not a huge deal for me.
As for updating the map, something that totally freaked me out after the reviews, my hubby convinced me to go ahead and try it. We did. While it did take a LONG time to finally download the map onto the device, and there wasn't enough space at first, tomtom home told us the map wouldn't fit and how much hard drive space we needed to open up. We went in and deleted the voices I wasn't planning on using and did the complete upload of the map. Everything worked fine. Just needed lots of patience.
Overall, I've been very pleased with the GPS and happy we got it. The price at Amazon is great too. We saw it in the Sunday ads last week for $100 more than the price here. Great deal, especially with the wider screen, spoken street names and advanced lane guidance!
