"A Nice Basic GPS Unit" | 2009-11-20 |

The Tomtom 140-S is a decent little GPS system that is easy to use, and gives good guidance in most siutations. I has it's limitations, but will do well if one doesn't get too far off the beaten path.
Strengths: The display, while smaller, is bright, clear, and crisp. The sound is crystal clear even to one such as me who has impaired hearing. In fact, I'd venture to say that there are few GPS units that have clearer sound. The larger than average speaker, and the voice synthesis circuits do an outstanding job of producing incredibly good sound quality. Navigation through the menus is easy and very understandable.
Weaknesses: the overall size of the display can present a problem to someone in need of trifocals. Erroneous map information can possibly be a problem in rural areas such as the one in which I live. In the town in which I live there is a road which runs east to west through the town, but is not continuous througout the town. If I follow the instructions while headed to the local Air Force Base, it will have me turn on a non-existent stretch of road that would put me squarely in the middle of wheat fields. Those are the only two disadvantages that I can list.
Summary: despite the relatively minor weaknesses, I would be confident to use the Tomtom 140-S to take a trip across the United States using most any highway of my choosing. Though I might be somewhat concerned about road information off the major highways and interstates, I believe it would get me where I want to go. It doesn't rate 5 stars, but it is a solid little GPS which I would not think a bad idea for a gift. The fact that I would be willing to give it as a gift is an indication that I think it is a worthwhile little GPS unit. If your GPS buying budget is limited, this one will do the job. |

Of the 10 times I've used this GPS, it has only worked about 3 times. It seems the farther the destination (IE: destinations 1 hour from my home), the wackier and more random the directions. I even had the map system updated with help from the TomTom tech support (who were very nice & very quick to answer the phone).
I typed in familiar destination points to test it. Of these commutes, it added approximately 10-15 minutes in distance/time, and mentioned streets that I have never heard of. For example, one set of directions stated to drive on Rt. 287 North, then to get off of Rt. 287 north to follow a series of surface streets, only to get BACK ON Rt. 287 North. Though I realize there's no perfect GPS system out there, I've opted to return the TomTom and explore other options. |

Didn't have the opportunity to get the product going so I can't tell you much about its features. For more than a month I am dealing with their Customer Support Service trying to replace (RMA) a broken new unit I got from Amazon. If Customer Service is a consideration in choosing a product, stay away from Tom Tom!!!

I recently moved to a new area and did not know my way around the cities and towns where I lived. I purchased the TomTom ONE 140-s after researching portable navigating systems. This product more than delivered-it is easy to use, got me from point A to point B with no problems, and did it all for a reasonable price. There were a few small drawbacks, the biggest of which is that the screen does not do well in direct, bright light. (Something I knew about before purchase) Here is a fix though-avoid, if possible, putting the device on the dash or attach to the windshield and if you cannot do that, simply angle the TomTom slightly down-that fixed the problem for me.
This device has a nice feature-you can take it with you when you walk or ride a bicycle and it will guide you around just fine.
If you are looking into purchasing one of these devices, and if you are a first time buyers like me, give this one a serious look. You will NOT be disappointed in it. |
