I just turned thirty and my sister surprised me with a Wii. So here I go--a new decade of my life and a new me! Time to get in shape! I immediately purchased EA Sports Active and Wii Fit Plus and just received them today. I started with Fit Plus and found the games fun albeit a bit hard to control the first time around. I then moved to EA Sports Active and LOVED IT! I just finished a thirty minute routine from the first day of the 30 Day Challenge and chose the medium difficulty level. It had me sweating half-way through and when it was over I had to walk outside in the brisk evening air to allow myself to cool down. What I like about this game is that they have videos showing you how to actually use the Wii remote, nunchuk, balance board, and resistance bands correctly before you complete an exercise the first time. When you come back to an exercise the second time, you can just skip through the video unless you want a reminder. So, with EA Sports I felt like I could instantly sync myself with what the game expected and therefore had a better workout experience; with Wit Fit Plus I feel like it's going to take a bit more time to figure out how to get my own body to sync with the screen so that I can maximize my calorie burn (although if nothing else, Wii Fit Plus has taught me that I need to be more aware of my body movements)!
I agree with others here that the included resistance band feels a bit flimsy. Honestly, when I first opened the box I thought they had made a mistake--it looked like a stretchy ribbon. I had some problems with the game recognizing my arm movements when I was doing bicep curls with the band. I have much stronger resistance bands from an old Billy Blanks workout DVD and think I will use those going forward. While I have larger thighs, I did not have a problem with the leg band over my Old Navy yoga pants. It did fall off once after some kickboxing, but I think that was my fault for not tightening it enough. I foresee having to wear it with yoga pants or some other type of tighter-fitting pants--I can't imagine being able to wear it comfortably over bulky pants or in shorts. I didn't have any problems with the nunchuk wire getting tangled although I obviously haven't tried all of the exercises yet.
Bottom line: on day #1 I'm very happy I purchased this product. I think having the balance board is a definite bonus to keeping track of your movements, so I'd recommend buying it in tandem with Wii Fit Plus if you don't already own the board. It is a bit more challenging to "run" while on the board, but I think that's a good thing! My biggest problem has been finding time to get to the gym. With this at home, I'm already excited to get up tomorrow and start working out again! |

| I purchased this video/game after reading other reviews and I was not disappointed. I chose not to purchase the Wii FIT & buy this training video instead. Once you get use to the strap on your leg & positioning the numchuk correctly, it really is a good workout. I am glad I read the reviews & took people's advice & did not waste my money buying the Wii Fit. This is like having a personal traner in my own home. I even find myself yelling the at TV (which is a good thing...no pain no gain)!! |

I'm glad I gave this product a shot. I have been using it for a week now, and I must say that the workouts make me sore in a good way. I can tell they are effective. I think I may get a more challenging band for certain upper body exercises, but the lower body workout is solid.
Unlike the Wii Fit, Active has a human trainer who guides you PIP, while you watch your avatar workout. There are also some pretty useful video demonstrations for each exercise. There are enough different exercises that you don't get bored. I'm doing the 30-day Challenge, and I like how it alternates muscle groups so you can work out everyday, but you're working different muscles. It's like having a personal trainer, in many ways. I love the trainer, actually. She sounds like she's planned special work-outs for me and she makes them sound so fun that I get excited about working out.
Here's an example of how this game makes a boring but effective move fun. Jump-ups from a squatting position are hard, exhausting, tedious, and make me want to throw in the towel after about 3 jumps, but with Wii Active, I'm not just squatting and jumping, I'm in-line skating (squats make you go faster) and jumping off ramps (jump up with a controlled finish). It's so much fun to watch my avatar on the screen that I forget that I'm doing squat-jumps. I actually look forward to them. I know they still work because I'm sore the next day in all the right places.
I don't love all the exercises, but you aren't doing each one for too long, so I can hang in there for 12 reps.
I generally work out at the gym, but with Wii Active I can get a gym quality workout at home in less time, plus no driving or gym attitude. If you have a Wii Balance Board, you can use it for activities such as kick boxing and inline skating lunges. I'm sure there are more, but the game paces you so you are constantly getting to try new moves.
I think you could probably cheat on some of the moves by manipulating the sensors, but why would you want to? |

| By far my favorite fitness game for the Wii is my fitness coach, but when I get bored with that, ea sports active is a nice change of pace. I like the fact that you don't have to unlock things and it doesn't lock you into what you have to do next - you can choose to not do the jumping parts that can hurt knees. I like their paced approach and use of resistance bands instead of free weights or doing push-ups on the floor, and it works very well considering that once in a while the controller might not completely register a movement. |
