"Exceeded my expectations" | 2009-11-12 |

My old Hoover upright was purchased in 1996, never needed a belt change, but was really due for replacing. I had used duct tape all over it to keep the back on the bag. After spending lots of time reading reviews and watching video reviews of vacuums, I had narrowed things down to a Miele. I have lots of allergies, and knew the model needed to be a true HEPA vac, but oh the price tag that comes with a Miele. It just isn't something I can afford right now.
So I was really interested when I saw the fantastic reviews for the Hoover Platinum bagged upright with canister. Furthermore, I noted that killdirt (google it) who reviews vacs and pretty much only raves over Miele actually had some of the Hoover platinum products for sale. That helped convince me.
But can a vacuum be as good as these reviews? Surprisingly, yes.
When I unpacked it, I was first impressed with the quality feel. Everything felt sturdy. There were no wimpy plastic parts that look like they could be broken off. The beautiful ergonomic handle had a clear plastic tape to prevent scratches in shipping. The cloth of the bag is thick and holds its shape. The HEPA filter is already loaded into the vacuum. Once you insert the handle into the vac, all you have to do is tighten a screw to secure it, and you're ready to go. there's nothing else that needs to be done.
My previous Hoover had a floor height adjustment slider on the front of the unit. It was a plastic part that eventually got broken off. It was also never easy to move. I was also always wondering what height my carpet was. High? Medium? With the Hoover Platinum there is no manual adjustment; it adjusts to the height of your carpet automatically. Beautiful! The front of the unit is uncluttered by a plastic knob that needs adjusting and can get caught on furniture.
The design of this vac really couldn't be better. On the back is a sturdy handle. That handle combined with a scooped area at the front below the bag makes the vac easy to lift and move up stairs.
The generous cord length is wonderful. I find I'm having to stop and unplug and find a new outlet much less frequently.
As for performance, nothing short of amazing. Once plugged in, the "on" button in the handle glows blue. Beneath it are Hi/Lo buttons. Use Lo for delicate items and rugs; use Hi for everything else. When I turned the vac on, I couldn't help but say ahhhhhhh because it was SO quiet--so much quieter than my previous Hoover upright. Amazingly, the cat didn't make an immediate beeline for the safety of under the bed like he always did when I vacuumed. I proceeded to vacuum the entire living room, and he simply stayed very aware, but didn't feel the need to go take cover from the vacuum monster.
The foot pedal to lean the vacuum back is also solid and doesn't look like something that would break off. Once you press it with your foot, the unit leans back. The improvement of this over my previous Hoover upright is that there aren't two positions (one for regular vacuuming and a second push of the foot for flattening the vac to go under beds). Once you've pressed the pedal, you can flatten the vac at any time without having to press the pedal again.
Immediately, it was apparent that this is a quality machine. The handle feels quality and is comfortable to hold. The LED light on the front lights the path. Little side brushes whisk debris away from edges and into the path of the vac. The suction was so much stronger than my previous vac. In fact, I sucked up a recharging cord that went with my Dustbuster. That stopped the vac, and I quickly turned it off and unwound it. I resumed vacuuming and noted such a difference in my carpets. They looked cleaner. They felt fluffier underfoot even in slippers.
Others mentioned how this unit is self-propelled, so I was interested in seeing what it felt like. It doesn't drive itself like the scene in the movie Mr. Mom. Pushing it forward just feels very easy. Pulling it toward you is slightly more difficult.
This comes with two instruction booklets--one for the upright and one for the canister.
The separate canister also feels sturdy. There's a strap that attaches easily to the unit. It has a small area that is rubbery and helps keep the strap from slipping on your shoulder. The canister is light enough that it doesn't hurt your shoulder to wear it for a while, but with long cleaning sessions you may want to alter the strap by using the suggestion of another commenter: add a fleece-type seat belt pad.
This little canister is awesome. Before I had all of those attachments on the back of the upright--attachments that would sometimes fall off or just feel in the way as I was vacuuming. Now they're on a separate unit altogether. The only downside I can see to this setup is if the canister dies before the upright, I'll be left with an upright without attachments. I decided that was a risk I was willing to take. I would simply have to find another canister-type vac to replace it.
The little canister makes quite a bit more noise than the upright does. This is likely due to the exhaust holes on the unit. The cat does take cover with the canister. Along with the canister come a few parts: a stretchy hose, a fabulous telescoping wand, a wide floor head that has bristles, a smaller dusting brush that doubles as an upholstery head, and a crevice tool. If you have a previous Hoover, be sure to save your parts when you discard your vac! I was delighted to find that the parts from my old Hoover upright actually fit the new canister, offering me the option of slightly different tools. I also now have a tube that I can use to make the telescoping wand even longer if I'm trying to reach high on the wall or far under the bed.
If you're considering a more expensive model, think again. This is really a top-notch item. I can't imagine any vacuum doing a better job than this one does. It is a quality machine that is reasonably priced. One thing I will mention about the price, however, is that you may want to monitor it a bit before you fork out the dough. When I purchased this from Amazon, it was 255. A day later it was 300. That's a pretty significant increase. If the price is high right now, you may see it drop again if you can wait to purchase. I can't recommend this vacuum more highly. You can buy this one with confidence. |

| After reading the rave reviews, I was very disappointed with this vacuum when I received it and tried it out. We have a medium thick pile carpet, and it takes an extraordinary amount of muscle to push it. The automatic height adjustment has no effect on the thicker pile. The suction is great, and it cleans low, tight pile and berber carpets very well....but DOES NOT WORK on thicker pile carpets....just too difficult to push. I called Hoover and asked them why that was not noted in their ads.....they apologized and said that has been a major complaint with this vac. We purchased from Amazon to save $30, and unfortunately disposed of the packaging material, and we couldn't easily send it back, so we ended up giving it to our son, who has berber carpets. He likes it....but we are shopping for another vac. We will buy this one locally so we can easily take it back if we are not satisfied with it. |

| I read all the reviews on Amazon before purchasing this vacuum, and then I went looking and comparing all the features. Everything that everyone said about this vacuum is correct. This is the BEST vacuum I've ever purchased! It has great suction; it's remarkably light-weight; it comes with the convenient carry-around canister; and it does a really good job vacuuming all sorts of floors. The auto-sensing floor height adjuster is fabulous -- and it does a really good job sensing the correct height when moving from carpet to wood to tile. In addition, I was looking for a vacuum with a bag to keep the mess down, and a vacuum with a really long power cord. Of course, I had other requirements for the vacuum, and all in all, this Hoover has all the features and met all my requirements. I would definitely recommend this vacuum combination to anyone who is looking for a good vacuum that does a really good job! |

"Excellent & Light Weight" | 2009-10-30 |

This upright vacuum is light weight, relatively quiet, and cleans the carpets well. The LED headlight is very bright. Weight makes vacuuming the stairs much easier than our older Hoover. Seems that Hoover finally got it right by designing a vacuum that performs its main purpose well - cleaning carpets.
The smaller canister vacuum has an annoying high pitched whine - earplugs help. If I were a dog, it would make me howl. However, I did not purchase this for the canister, thus the 5 stars. |
