I upgraded from a Visio (cheap Costco brand). I am not absolutely sure that it has a distinguishable difference in picture quality. It has lot of features. One of the main disadvantages of having too many features is that it results in too many buttons. The buttons are not always intuitive. So it takes time to get used to. One major complain I have is with the agility of the remote. Channels can only be changed from the remote the TV is very slow to get the signals from the remote. As a result it takes several attempts to change the channel. Also the reception from the remote is not very good and so you end up going to the wrong channel.
One feature that is missing is the ability to create a separate list of the channels that one usually watches.
Among the hundreds of channels we watch only a handful, there is no way to isolate them so that one can see only those. True there is a "favorite" list. but one has to get to it by clicking several other buttons and you can not attach the discription of the channel to them.
Otherwise, it is a good TV, other than the fact that it is a Sony, I am not sure how much of an upgrade it is.

I bought this a few weeks ago for 1900.00. Consumer reports didn't like this a lot, rating several models above it, including LG's 55 inch LED model. They also said it had a worse than average viewing angle. Well, I love this set. The picture quality remains sharp at wide angles, thank you very much, so I have no problem there. The sound is fine for TV viewing, and with sports the 240 refresh rate really pays off.
It is a great tv with all the latest feature set and many input options. Setup is simple. With the latest update, Netflix is streaming in.
"Great TV!"

This is an awesome television. I could not be happier. Fantastic picture & sound (amazing!). Lots of extra features. Can't wait until Netflix has streaming movies available on Bravia tvs (supposed to be available soon).

I had owned a Sony SXRD Front-END Project for 3 years now. Since LCD TV is still expensive few years back, I could not afford (4-5K). After purchased this Sony LCD XBR9 TV, I did not want to watch the SXRD TV anymore, it was bright and clear. First time I had owned a LCD TV:-). I plan to go with LCD LED, but it is quite new and expensive for now. It is good to wait for older generation coming later. I did not try to play game with this TV yet, but I am sure it will be amazed. For me, it was a good product (sony) and good service from amazon.

I have a 47 in XBR9 at home that i bought in 2007. based on my good experience with it we bought this tv for our oil platform rec room. its get lots of use and is generally on 24/7. The picture clarity is great, blue rays are very detailed when played through our PS3. I haven't been able to sit down and do the calibration on it yet because people are always playing madden or guitar hero on it in the evening-- so the color is a little off (kinda red). The menu is nicely organized.
The mate screen reduces glare from florescent lights very well.
The tim of this model and the hidden speakers make it look mutch nicer and sleek than my old tv. Every one out here looks at it and imediatly says "I want one of those for my house"
I have 2 complaints one i think is major and one is minor:
1st--when we try to play guitar hero the timeing is all off unless we put it in "game mode", by pressing the sceene button. the problem is that after two minutes it goes blank then switches back to "auto mode". not sure if this is a firmware glitch or what. on my older
2nd-- when watching The Dark Night i noticed that the fast moving objects on the screen were perfectly clear with well defined edges but arround these edgdes there is about 2 in of blurred background(especially in the scene where they crash the helicopter). My older 120 hz tv didn't seem to have this problem(or if it did it wasnt as pronounced) and it really bothers me. With the 240hz the tv even looks more 3d and wierd than with my older tv, but thats probably a personal preference.
other than that it plays all other games well and desplays our SD satellite nicely, the date it was intalled was october 17 2009 so we'll see how long it goes whitout problems.
