I wanted a Xbox 360 for a decent price and didn't need much hard drive space- works great so far and looks much nicer than its clunkier predecessor. It doesn't get hot either, even after hours of playing at a stretch. I wish I waited a week later when Amazon had its lightning deal offering a $100 gift certificate, but I don't regret this purchase at all. My family had a great time playing at our last get together.

I'm going to leave the reliability issue out of my review since MS now grants three year coverage on the three red light issue (Google if you are unaware). Buying this version of the 360 is the cheapest way to get into this generation of consoles. That is the good. The bad is you are missing a couple of key elements from really taking advantage of this generation. The biggest issue is you are missing are Hard Drive. This may not seem like an issue initially, but with lots of downloadable content and games available over X-Box live you will eventually want the Hard Drive. The other missing element is an HDMI cable. If you are hooking you're your new Arcade unit using the supplied cables it is the equal of buying a sports car and never taking it past the second gear. You NEED to have an HDMI cable to get the full benefits out of this unit.
There is a good news/bad news situation for the two things you need to buy. First the bad news is the Hard Drive 360s use is proprietary. This means MS (Microsoft) can overcharge for this accessory if they wish (and in my opinion they do). The good news is you can purchase any HDMI cable. This is not a proprietary item. I'm sure MS would tell you their cable are the best, but do your research and you'll find any HDMI cable will do.
Even with these issues the 360 is a ton of fun. Just think about what unit Arcade or Elite will best fit your needs prior to purchasing. In my opinion the Arcade is not a very good value, thus the three star rating.

This was my second RROD of death even with a Jasper (sent it in to have replaced). The majority of the reviews you read, the reviewer will mention what # Xbox they are on already since all previous ones have already broken (don't believe me, go ahead and read these things). Not to mention how much Microsoft nickel and dimes you for everything.
I am not a PS3 "fanboy" by any means. Actually I WAS an Xbox freak but the reliability of these machines are a joke! Sure you get a 3 year warranty but how many times will you have to send it back? As I mentioned, Microsoft will milk your pocket dry with everything that you have to buy. This version you will need a larger hard drive ($50-$100). Now you need a wireless adapter (another $75). Now you need the plug and play so you aren't shelling out money for batteries (another $25). Did I mention it is $50 a year for Xbox Live Gold? There you go...just to have the bare essentials you just shelled out almost $250 without buying any games yet! Sure you can go with the elite for another $100 but you still don't have the wireless adapter, Xbox Live Gold or the plug and play.
I have the Wii now and have had zero problems with it (not to mention comes with a wireless adapter already inside and you can store game saves on a $10 SD memory card). I am seriously considering getting a PS3 now since their price went down. I will miss Halo and Gears of War but I will not miss getting every thing charged extra to me. PS3 already comes with a wireless adapter, USB charge controllers with USB cord and the internet/Playstation network is FREE. Thats $150 of stuff Xbox would have charged me already inside the PS3 Slim as soon as I open it. The Slim comes with a Blu Ray player already built in as well as Free Netfilx movies for those that have a Netflix subscription (Xbox does have Netflix also).
Honestly, if you want to buy an XBox please see how many break and how many of these reviewers actually admit that this a replacement console for one (or two) that have already broken. This is my second RROD and I refuse to buy another one. Goodbye Microsoft...it has been fun.
I started with a launch xbox 360 and it is still going strong. I bought an elite and then a Resident Evil Elite. I gave the launch to my son and elite i sold to a friend. Then my 2 youngest sons wanted to pay all the time so i bought them an arcade. They love it. There are plenty of games and arcade games they can play when they want and we do system link battles on games on the weekends.
The system runs cool and is not as noisy as my launch console. It also includes 512 mb of internal memory but i bought an hdd for the map packs and downloads and such. Setting up family protection settings is easy and keeps them from being able to just add anyone or talk to anyone on line.
On the technical side the system does not come with wifi if you want that. I don't use it for my consoles so i do not need it. Also, the hdd (hard drive) is not included so if you want to download map packs you have to buy one. And MS hdd's cost a lot and you would be better off to get an elite if you need one. For children that do not need an hdd this is a great option though. And you can upgrade with the hdd later if desired. If you want to use HDMI for the connection to your tv do not buy an expensive cable, look around and you can order a quality one fairly cheap that is just as good.

I purchased an Xbox 360 Arcade after my original Xbox 360 broke out of warranty (not RROD interestingly enough, but an issue where it turned off whenever I tried to play a game)
The Arcade version is superior to my old console in a vast number of ways; it comes with an hdmi port, an improved power adapter (lighter and easier to plug in), uses less energy, and runs cooler. I am also under the impression that it runs more quietly, but perhaps this is only because I have recently started installing the games I play onto my hard drive.
Basically, the Arcade is a solid console; I don't see it breaking down on me before the advent of the next generation of gaming systems. I highly recommend it,JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOUR GETTING THE JASPER CHIPSET (my guess is that any arcade that you buy will have the jasper chipset, but if you want to make sure refer to the advice in the next paragraph.
When you receive your console, don't open it! Peek through the viewing window in the box's cover. If you see that it says "12 V DC, 12.1 A" then you've got yourself a Jasper : )
Congratulations and have fun!
