So I took this camera to Colorado and big bend. Construction wise and temperature wise this camera held up superb and I definately recommend it to anyone for such duties. It also has a pannorama mode that automatically merges three pictures into one.
For dawn type shots around 5 a.m. This camera can take good pictures if your shutter speed cooperates and the camera finds something close by to focus on. However those shots only worked out 30% of the time. Night shots are pretty much a lost cause unless you photograph a bright moon.
Day time and early dusk photos always look great at an iso of 100 which I'd recommend for best picture quality.
Side note: my first camera came with a defect. A pixel in the bottom center ofthe camera was bad so that all my pictures had a white spot there. At first it wasn't as noticable, but as I took more pictures that spot gre and grew and became an utter nuisance. Amazon was great in replacing the camera for me and the new one appears to be without defect.
The camera also has a crude altimiter which can be enabled and calibrated for climbing. I have a more accurate one, but for rough reference of your ascent pictures it's a nice feature.
Because of the defect ruining some of my pictures, because dawn picture quality being subpar, and general picture quality only being above average I give this camera 4 stars. Ruggedness wise this is the camera to get! |

I bought this camera specifically for my honeymoon back in June. We went to Fiji, and I wanted to have something to take underwater shots of the coral, etc.
This little thing did better than expected. The instructions suggest that you keep it underwater for no more than 10 minutes. We went on a 45 minute dive, and it held up. I did get a little nervous when after about 35 minutes underwater, I began to notice some 'bubbles' forming under the screen. I don't know if it was air, or if water got it, but when I got to the surface I opened everything up to dry out, and it disappeared soon.
The pictures and video underwater turned out fantastic.
I've dropped it a couple times, and generally used it like it's made to be used, and it's held touhg for over 5 months. So, definitely worth it if you're going to abuse it and want something to hold up underwater! |

I have used an Olympus 790sw for 3 years, with a real tough treatment, I'm mountain biker and have used for rafting too. Never took care of the elements with the camera pool, beach, mood, felt+++. A month ago the camera got water in. I was reading and founded out that I should clean the seal periodically and I didn't, so never mind but clean it and read the manual. Just have couples of days with the tough 8000 and the mayor flaw for me is that it doesn't have in the scene of multi-shooting, normal people (person that doesn't need the tough part) might not use it, but when a bike is coming fast, with that utility I used to get the right shoot, that really disappoint me. That function it's so important to me, that if I found that before I have bought it, I wouldn't buy it (That's personal too).
Another thing is that you have to charge the battery inside the camera, personally I don't like it.
The good so far, picture quality its way better than the 790sw both in less than 7 Megapixel, its heavy, and its very well done, it look tough, modern and feel like it is. I have read many reviews of the picture quality but this want like I said is very good or more than enough for me.
I'll make an update after my first ride with it. |

I was a little nervous jumping in the ocean the first time with my new camera but a dozen times in the water and NO PROBLEMS. The underwater picture quality was a treat after years of trying to use disposable underwater cameras- it was FUN to take pictures and videos underwater. This camera has many, many menu settings and I was a little nervous that I would change a setting inadvertently but so far, I am finding my way around the menus and features without any problems. The manual is a bit confusing, as are all camera instruction manuals that I have ever had.
I wish it had a viewfinder, it only has a display screen.
So far I have taken about 500+ pictures and find this camera fun and somewhat intuitive to figure out having had an Olympus Stylus before this one. The computer software takes some figuring out- I am still working on that part. |

| I have really enjoyed this camera. I have had it for about 6 months. It is very easy to use. Even for me. It is my first digital camera. The underwater feature is what brought me to digital. I had it in my purse and the back door accidently came opened and broke off. I sent it back under warranty and had it back repaired at no cost within 10 days.GREAT TURN-AROUND! Another time I dropped the camera and cracked a hairline crack in the back door. I decided the gasket was still holding well and chose to go snorkling with it. Bad decision. The camera died. Once again I sent it for repair under warranty and had it back within 10 days. This time they sent full instructions on underwater use and care. By the way, all the photos I had taken were saved. Even the ones under water. All were very clear. I have never had any bubbles or fog residue in my underwater photos. As for the back door problem... I purchased a silicone cover for my camera. It wraps aroun the back door and keeps it from opening. It also provides a cushion against drops for a klutz like me. I have actually accidently slung my camera across the sidewalk (with a few bounces). No harm done. Maybe a couple of scratches. I should have bought the silicone camera cover sooner. By the way. It takes excellent photos! Great video, also. |
