"I love Canon" | 2009-11-14 |

| I previously owned a Canon Powershot A630, but then my son dropped it and the zoom busted and I was without a camera. I wanted to just replace my old Canon because I loved that camera and it worked well for me. I just take pictures of family and outdoor stuff. I'm not doing this professionally or even really as a hobby. I just want good pics of my family and their activities. So I tried to locate the A630, but Amazon wanted $70 more than what I paid for it 3 years ago. NO. So I found this camera at another store and looked at it before I bought it online. It had the flip screen which I love for taking different angled shots. It had all the same buttons like portrait, custom color, color swap, indoors, foliage, fireworks, underwater, etc. The zoom is amazing on this camera and I love that it isn't extremely huge. I can still handle it pretty well. The lens cap is kind of cheap, but it works. I still have yet to mess with the camera and figure it all out, but I am so pleased with this camera. I have been able to figure out the majority of the buttons because I already owned a Canon previously. I just love Canon's. They work well for someone like me who is looking for good quality family shots although I think its way better than a basic point and shoot camera. The price also was a good buy. The store wanted $50 more than Amazon did. I think this is a really great camera. You'll be pleased. |

"Poor Low-Light video compared to my S5" | 2009-11-13 |

| I actually got a deal on this camera at $315 new, so I decided to get it to replace my Canon S5. I was really interested in adding 720p HD video with widescreen. Compared to the S5, this camera is pretty much the same as far as controls, and still picture quality. My main problem was with the video. I have two kids 2 and under, and I shoot a lot of my video inside under low light conditions. The canon S5 was really quite good for getting video in low light conditions although it was pretty grainy. Also, most HD video cameras are pretty good at low light conditions. So, I expected this camera to be as good or better. When I first pressed the record button, the screen instantly went to at least half brightness. it looked like I was recording in a much much darker room than I was in. I then started to compare it to my S5 side by side. The S5 was probably twice as bright as the SX20. I also compared the videos after copying them to my PC thinking it may be a problem with the lcd screen on the S5, and still the video was much darker on the SX20 than the S5. Also, there wasn't a significant increase in video quality. Just when comparing the two cameras lcd screen in standard view finder modes, my S5 showed the room much brighter. Part of me thinks that I got one with a bad sensor. However when taking still pictures the images seemed to turn out just fine. I realize there is a way to adjust the brightness of the video while you are shooting, but even when I turned that all the way up the video was still very dark. Also, it's worth noting that when zoomed out, the brightness seemed better, but after zooming in on an object, the object would get much darker than it was when it was zoomed out. Believe me, I've seen all the great outdoor video samples on the web, and this thing looks incredible. I wish someone would have posted some samples in indoor low-light conditions. I would just be returning it, but the retailer has a 15% restocking fee, so I've put it up on ebay hoping to make my money back... |

"Powerful "bridge" camera" | 2009-11-11 |

My first "bridge" camera and I'm very pleased with the results. Like the manual mode since I wanted to move from a full auto Kodak P&S but not yet ready for a DSLR with all the lenses and stuff. Let me start by saying I'm not a pro but as others have already commented, if you expect this camera to take wonderful or amazing shots and all you use is AUTO mode this is not the right camera. IMHO will be a waste to use this in AUTO mode since it was built for a lot more than that.
Powerful zoom, friendly user menu screens, easy access to most frequent settings (when you get used to it). I separately purchased the filter adapter from Lensmate and have now the option to use UV and polarizing filters on it. To save a couple of bucks I ordered some chinese manual flashes and they work just great with this camera. I also purchased a Cactus V4 set for wireless flash photography and have had no problems at all.
Bottom line: this camera will allow you to explore your creative side using the manual settings and powerful zoom with nice quality pictures after spending enough time reading the manual and getting used to it but in the other hand will disappoint you if all you do is use AUTO mode or expect "$1500-pro-camera" photos just by using it out of the box. |
