The system works as advertised. There are a lot of options you really have to configure before the system is ready to go, this isn't overly difficult just time consuming. Unlike its predecessor, the CT100, this system has a lot of sound output. Granted in a really big room some of this might be lost, but in a medium sized room it works nicely. I've only ever had this thing at about 30/50 for the volume level. The HDMI switching works great, the on-screen display works great (though I do notice an audio delay which is fixable in the options). For the money I'm not sure you can find a better value. Of course, like others have said, this isn't TRUE surround sound but I think most people looking at sound bars likely already know that. It does a decent job at simulating the surround sound experience though.

I added the Sony sound bar to a Samsung LCD. It was money well spent in that the quality of the sound is a noticable improvement. As other reviews state, it's not surround sound. I would call the sound a richer stero sound. For this room I did not want multiple speakers. A couple of times I have had to cut the power to my Samsung Blu-Ray and the sound bar to "unfreeze" their connection in order to connect to another input device (Sattelite). This problem may be the Blu-Ray not the sound bar. Overall satisfied - given price considerations.

It has now been a week since I set up the unit. This home theater system made by Sony is a pleasant suprise. Model HT-CT500.
I am very impressed with the multiple HDMI ports which made set up a snap. The cable/satellite box and high def DVD connect to the back of the subwoofer and then one lead goes to the TV. All HDMI. Very straight forward and simple. No pass-though signal loss or degredation noted.
I was never comfortable with the former phono plug cables as far as consistent tone quality.
The volume issues with the HT-CT100 have been resolved.
The tone quality and fidelity is very pleasing. Plenty of bass and trouble and excellent fidelity. Separation as expected using a soundbar. Much improved over my Samsung plasma speakers.
I did review other soundbars. My choice was heavily weighed by the multiple HDMI ports and use of HDMI cables. No need for other cables other than to the soundbar. This seems unique to the sony product.
Also having capability to add wireless speakers is nice. It would have been nicer if the transmitter was built in without need for purchasing an adapter unit.
The unit was purchased through Amazon and extra HDMI cables are very cheap now. If you use them keep in mind a static arrestor may be needed.
Hope my opinion adds to the other comments.

I was impressed by the construction quality, plethora of HDMI inputs, subwoofer/sound bar richness and power, and sleekness and compatibility of its components.

I was disappointed by the lack of surround sound.

Please do not buy this expecting an immersive surround sound experience. This is a sleek, compact, no clutter, high quality sound system that will do any non-audiophile home theater system proud.

If you are tired of the hollow sound you get from your LCD/Plasma internal speakers this is definitely an upgrade for you... Is this a fantastic system like you read from other reviews (it is all based on the individual and the room size, which matters)...

I have a decent sized family room that has an open loft and cathedral ceilings... My wife and I were tired of the terrible sound from our Samsung 47" LCD so I was researching and researching soundbars and almost pulled the trigger on the Polk SDA with wireless sub, UNTIL I found out that the wireless sub has MAJOR issues with homes with wireless internet (which we have)... Apparently there is some major interference based on the 2 wireless systems... So that eliminated that which brought me to the Sony HTCT500...

I got our local electronics store to get very close in matching the Amazon price so I pulled the trigger... Now for the review

Setup - pretty easy... Just make sure you have an abundant supply of HDMI cables (buy online if you can, it will save you a fortune)... All you really do is plug in the HDMI cables and you are off and running

Sound - first it only goes up to 50 and it is NOT super loud... In my room I put it at 50 and was shocked that I wasn't blown out of my sofa... The sound is definitely better than the internal speakers in my LCD, but overly loud... Surround sound, there is NONE.. I was hoping to get some, but in reality all this soundbar is, is a bigger speaker for the TV... I can tell more bass with the sub, which is nice

Compatibility - for those that have Harmony remotes this is the frustration point... I have setup the harmony remote with all the settings, you turn the TV/Satellite/Cable/SoundBar on, the soundbar defaults to TV.. So there is a process of getting everything working which is kind of annoying.. I wish Sony allowed you to set a default setting, but I cannot seem to find that..

It worked perfectly with my Samsung...

In conclusion, if you are tired of the hollow sound and you have the $400-$500 laying around it helps... If you have more money and no wireless internet the Polk is very nice.. And if you have $2000 laying around the Yamaha still blows them all away...

Just received mine in the mail today. Note* The shipping box it comes in is pretty huge. Set up was really easy, just had to unplug all the connections from my TV into the A/V receiver/subwoofer. All those connections are now output to my TV through one simple HDMI cable, really nice. It's a big plus being able to toggle through all the inputs through the A/V receiver remote rather than my samsung hdtv. The TV just lags too much when I try to switch between inputs i.e. going from tv to xbox 360 and having to toggle through everything in between. With the sony remote, I just have to press the button for whichever input I want and it's automatically up, video and sound, without having to toggle through every one.

Sound is great. I can easily tell the difference between this and my Samsung TV speakers. Highs are higher, lows are lower, overall range and depth of sound is expanded. Plus the sound fills up the room without being too loud. So far I watched Black Hawk Down and played Forza Motorsport 2 with this system. The movie and game are known for their great sound and they sound a lot better with this system. I was able to notice sounds I couldn't hear with my TV speakers.

With Sony's reputation for dependability and all the HD inputs this thing has, I know I'll be able to keep this investment for a long time.
