Editorial Review
Nintendo pioneered handheld entertainment in the '80s and famously made it fully mobile and accessible to millions around the world with the Game Boy and DS video game systems. Now, Nintendo is taking things to the next level by transforming the way people access, experience, create and share content with the new Nintendo DSi system, the third iteration of the world's best-selling portable video game system.

The DSi external camera in action. The System The Nintendo DSi is a high-powered handheld video game system in a sleek, folding design-loaded with features designed to create a unique gaming experience. Like the DS and DS Lite before it, the DSi features Nintendo's trademark stylus-driven touchscreen technology, but determined to make portable gaming simultaneously larger and smaller in all the right places, Nintendo has also created the DSi with significantly larger screens and an even slimmer body design than its earlier cousins. Other features include the ability to snap photos with built-in cameras, edit and send them to friends, play back your music with Nintendo DSi Sound, or browse the Internet with the Nintendo DSi Browser. From playing games to just playing around, the Nintendo DSi does it all.

Features:

The DSi's Two Digital Cameras The most noticeable feature of the slim Nintendo DSi system are its two cameras - one camera is situated on the external body pointing away from the user, and the second one points at the user when the device is flipped open. As the first truly interactive digital camera in a video game system, the DSi Cameras feature 10 different interactive "lenses" that can manipulate your photos, offering an easy way to take and share your photos with family and friends. The cameras also present people with unprecedented ways to interact with their games, and in the process provide developers with a new tool to devise creative games and experiences. If the touch screen gave Nintendo DS a sense of feel and the microphone allowed it to hear, the two cameras give Nintendo DSi the sense of sight.

DSi Sound Another enhanced feature is the Nintendo DSi Sound application, which serves as both an interactive voice recorder and music player that allows users to play with their music while they listen to it. Users can access different audio filters or control the pitch and speed of recorded voice or music files to alter voices or change the tempo of a song. The mic is located between the two screens when the device is flipped open, and there is also a stereo headphone output that lets users listen to music saved on an SD card, even with the screen shut.

The DSiWare In the world of software, Nintendo DSi will be the platform for the most relevant and fun on-the-go games and applications. The Nintendo DSiWare application will populate Nintendo DSi with software that can be downloaded using Nintendo DSi Points directly to the portable system, just as WiiWare has with Nintendo's Wii console. Developers big and small are invited to create software that makes use of the properties and functions of the hardware. Nintendo DSiWare games and applications will be available at a range of values, starting at 200 points.

Games and Backwards Compatibility In addition to downloadable games, Nintendo DSi is able to play games made specifically for the system and sold at retail. The system can also play most Nintendo DS games, and will have access to a library of more than 850 titles originally made for that system. As an example of the quality of games that DSi players can expect to see both from both Nintendo and third-party game developers, at the launch of the DSi Nintendo is also releasing Rhythm Heaven. A wildly popular rhythm game in Japan, where it has sold nearly 2 million copies since its release in mid 2008, Rhythm Heaven features catchy tunes, charming characters, and a wide variety of rhythm games as it makes maximum use of the DSi's functionality.

Facebook Nintendo DSi owners have even more ways to share their experiences with friends and family. Using an Internet-connected Nintendo DSi system and the Nintendo DSi Camera application, Facebook members can take pictures with either of the system's two cameras and upload their photos directly to their Facebook profile. While reviewing pictures they've stored in the Nintendo DSi Camera album, which includes photos taken by users and manipulated using the built-in interactive lenses, users can simply tap the Facebook icon on the system's touch screen to instantly transmit photos to the user's Facebook profile.  The user's system must be configured to a wireless broadband Internet connection for the transmission of photos.

4 Star Rating  "A lot of fun"2009-11-14

Pros

-Can download games
-Can take pictures
-New built-in features are fun

Cons

-Web browser is really basic
-Picture resolution is mediocre
-Battery life is a little shorter

I bought this as a gift for my son's 12th birthday and although it was a little expensive it has, so far, been worth it. When I bought this a couple of months ago, there were only 2 colors, black and blue but now there are four colors. I wish I could have waited a little longer to buy it because my son wanted it in white but it wasn't out as of his birthday so my hands were tied. Anyway, he loves it regardless. He has spent more time using the built in features than he has played any games on it. The features include a program that allows you to record short bits of noise and alter it as you wish. It can be very amusing and annoying at the same time. Another feature is the picture editing application. It allows you to take a picture and alter it as you wish. You can add clip art type images to your base picture, you can twist the picture, change colors, mirror it, split it, etc. Once again, it can be very amusing.

Although the DSi has a lot of new features, some of them are very basic and almost not worth it. The internet access is extremely limited. My son can connect and surf the web but there are a lot of restrictions. The browser is really basic. It doesn't support Java, videos or music. You can only see basic web pages. You can check news, your email and facebook which is nice but you can't view any videos or any flash applications. The Wi-Fi is really weak so you have to be close to your access point to connect. The picture resolution is just mediocre which I guess is fine for kids but otherwise, it's useless for taking pictures.

Overall, it is a great product in my opinion and lots of fun for kids and maybe adults too. It can be worth the over the top price if your kids take care of it and play it as often as mine does. However, a word to the wise, a new DSi called the DSi XL is coming out next year (the first quarter of the year) so if you are contemplating this purchase, you may want to wait. I read that the XL will be $220 but it will be bigger so you may want to do your homework before buying this one just to make sure this is the one you want.

5 Star Rating  "Welcomed Upgrade"2009-11-10
- Reviewed By User: A27G9LMQTMND03
As an owner of 4 DS's in the past (Two first generations, and 2 Lites) I can tell you this is a very welcomed upgrade.

The DSi improved on what the DS lite had done, first thing you will notice when you open the DSi is that the screens are slightly bigger, while offering the same resolution, and that the layout is slightly different. The power button is now back on the inside of the case though moved to a more better position so you don't accidentally turn off your system mid game like with the original DS. The power button is more reformed now, being only a circle instead of a rectangle like the original DS was or a slider like the lite was (I feel Nintendo tried to copy Sony's power slider. The volume button has also been changed and moved instead of it being a slider its now a button (very welcomed changed IMHO) and is moved to the left top side.

The outer casing is what made me buy a DSi, its finish is like the original DS in that it is hard to scratch or chip, but instead of being glossy colors its now just matte. One thing I HATED about the DS lite was that the finish was very easy to scratch/damage if you weren't extremely careful at all times (although just like the 1st gen PS3 the finish will scratch itself over time). Overall the DSi has a more, dare I say mature look whereas the original looked like a Gameboy Advance SP with wings, and was very bulky and had an overall kiddy look, and the Lites looked almost like a fancy makeup box. With the DSi I don't feel weird playing it in public because it doesn't have the strange looks of the older systems. The DSi is also lacking a GBA port, but I never play GBA games and I feel with the port gone it gives the DSi a very sleek look. But to soften the blow for some people a SD card slot was added to store various things (has HCSD compatibility)

When you turn on the DSi you will notice a major overhaul of the interface,no longer do you have to turn off the system after you make changes in the settings, and you can 'hot swap' games (you don't have to turn off the DSi to change games). The interface is very similar to the Wii. One thing I like is that the DSi has a built in web browser (no more $30 add-on!). As well as that there is also a music player (AAC files only ;.;) DSi shop (similar to the Wii shop) voice recorder and camera software and a few other misc options.

Thats right the DSi has 2 cameras now one in the middle of the hinge, and the other on the outside of the top lid. They are both .3 megapixel cameras that take decent pictures (don't expect them to be pretty blown up) That look good only on the DSi screens.

Another thing I really like is that the DSi has upgradable firmware to possibly add .MP3 compatibly to the music player and a longer duration voice recording (10 seconds is mediocre at best) It should be noted that the DSi has more ram (for internet use)and a slightly faster CPU as well as 1 extra screen brightness)

So,should you upgrade?

Well in short, yes. If you have an original DS do not upgrade to a lite, spend the extra money and go for a DSi,with the extra ram and faster CPU DS games with soon start putting those extras to good use..leaving the DS&DS lite in the dust. I also recommend you get a case protector (one that stays on your DS all the time) and some screen protectors to protect your investment from unwanted bumps and bruises) Of course with all these new features the price has been tacked up a wee bit instead of being $130 the DSi is now $170. Overall though the extra cost is justifiable.

To Summarize:

Pros:

+New,improved button layout
+MUCH better finish
+bigger screens
+more sleek and mature
+SD card slot added
+Interface overhaul
+Upgradable firmware
+Faster CPU and more Ram
+Case is slightly longer but looks a better IMO
+Slimmer
+Nice blue power light replacing the green one
=/= GBA slot removed
Cons:

-Reduced battery life (with more features comes more batt. drainage)
-Smaller battery (the DSi is slimmer)
-Web browser still slow
=/= GBA slot removed

As you can see, the Pros outweigh the cons by a large margin. Perfect X-mas gift for kids to teens!
