Editorial Review
Perfect for rugged adventurers and weekend warriors, the solar-powered Casio Pathfinder men's sport watch is loaded with a digital compass and altimeter/barometer/thermometer--perfect for both mountain trekking and cave spelunking. It also includes tide and moon graphs and moon age data, and is very precise thanks to its atomic timekeeping features. The durable round watch case (measuring 50.5mm/1.98 inches wide) and bracelet are made of titanium, which is nearly 50 percent lighter than steel, but 30 percent stronger. It's also particularly resistant to salt water corrosion, as well as hypo-allergenic--perfect for those with metal allergies.

The altimeter offers 5-meter measurements from -700 to 10,000 meters, and it can store altitude, month, date and time data, provide tendency and differential graphs, track cumulative ascent/descent, and sound an alarm when you reach a specified altitude. The watch also has a digital compass with 16 points of measurement displayed on the dial face. Other environmental and timekeeping features include:
  • Barometer with atmospheric pressure tendency/differential graphics
  • Thermometer
  • World Time: 29 times zones (30 cities), city code display, daylight saving on/off
  • 5 daily alarms
  • 1/100 second stopwatch with 24-hour capacity and elapsed/split time modes and 1st-2nd place times
  • Countdown timer with 60-minute range
  • Auto Calendar (pre-programmed until the year 2099)
This watch also features a ±20-second accuracy per month, Afterglow backlighting, and water resistance to water resistance to 200 meters (660 feet)--which will stand up to the rigors of recreational scuba diving. This solar-powered watch has a battery life of up to 5 months on a full charge (without further exposure to light).

This multi-band radio-controlled watch receives a time calibration signal transmitted from several locations across the globe (the U.S., UK, Germany, and Japan), and it has an auto receive function (up to 6 times per day). You can choose to automatically receive this signal four times a day, or manually update the watch to the atomic clock.

Here is what people are saying about the Casio Pathfinder PAW1500T-7V Solar Atomic Ultimate Watch

I got this watch for my husband because it has a lot of really cool features. Unfortunately, it is so large that it looks absolutely ridiculous on his arm. Seriously, HUGE. Also, be warned that Amazon is really strict about its 30-day return policy. So, if you get it and hate it, mail it back ASAP. We are now stuck with a watch fit for Fred Flintstone.

I was in need of a new watch, my citizen wasn't cutting it. And I was headed out west for a week in the mountains.

Upon arrival my watch was well protected in its packing, I must say, I wasn't expecting the intricate package design. The manual is small, but easy to read. I haven't had any trouble learning the functions on the watch. If I can't figure it out on my own a quick look at the manual is all I have needed to school myself up.

The major test was my trip to WY. The titanium band is extremely light, and never felt too heavy or got in the way during long days of hunting. Using topo maps I checked the accuracy of the altitude and compass features. The altitude was generally within 20ft of the altitude on the map, and compass degrees within 5-6 degrees of my silva compass.

I have had this product for over a month now, and am extremely pleased with its performance. I would recommend it for anyone who spends a lot of time in the outdoors, hikers, hunters, fisherman.

So many functions. I bought it mainly for the tide function but find myself using most of the other functions. Easy to learn. Lightweight and comfortable.

4 Star Rating  "Great watch, user guide layout can be better"2009-09-30
- Reviewed By User: AFEIDDS1U2U3O
After doing weeks of research on the web and I have finally committed to purchase this watch about two weeks ago.

At the first glance, this Titanium watch is rather subtle. The touch of the band is nice and smooth. Though it is very light, it doesn't feel cheap. In fact, the balance is just right. Pathfinder and G-Shock series are infamous of its size, and this one is no exception. The LCD layout is very good. It's informative yet not too busy like the Citizen Skyhawk.

All the ABC meterings are right on. I had to reset the altimeter at the sea level but it has been very accurate since. I didn't have to do other calibration for Barometer and Compass at all.

The control of the buttons are logically laid out. However, I suggest the owner to grab a cup of coffee, sit at the quiet area, and spend about 1 hour to read through the entire manual. It's thick and lenghthy. But once you understand the logic to set your watch, it's relatively easy.

Solar Battery is awesome. I put my watch underneath my desk lamp to be charged at night. I never run into any low-battery issue at all. The level indicator always shows "H"igh.

Atomic sync is another great feature. I live in Sunnyvale, California. I put my watch by my night stand and it syncs up every night without issue. I don't even have to put it next to the window.

Conclusion: Great watch in general. There are three things that can be improved: 1: User Manual can be better written. 2: The alarm is too soft 3: The illuminator only stays around 3 seconds which is a bit short. If you woke up in the middle of the night, you have to be very alert to read the time that displays only for 3 short seconds. Granted you can press the button to re-illuminate it again.

Suunto is much more stylish than Pathfinder, but its built quality has been subpar these days. Casio Pathfinder is like a Toyota Camry. It's not stylish in anyway you look at it, but it performs very well and reliable. Hope my two cents help.

Functions as described but with touches I had not picked up when reading about it. For example, in a dark room watching TV or at a movie and need to check the time? No fumbling for the light button, just tilt wrist to normal viewing angel and the watch face briefly illuminates. And, the "home" screen packs quite a bit of information in an easy-to-decipher interface: time and date of course but also a graph of changing barometric pressures -- oops, looks like a change in the weather is coming -- and tides show in a simple graphic display. Phase of the moon is there, too. Surprisingly, this display does not seem cluttered and my middle-age eyes can still read the time without the reading glasses (2.50) on.

Not for those who are gadget-challenging. Need to spend a fair amount of time, initially, setting preferred units, getting a time sync, and such and, if you want accuracy, feeding in actual high tide time, pressure, temperature, altitude, and magnetic declination for your area. Nice thing, of course, is that you can do precisely such, overriding the defaults with better local information. Instruction book is a real challenge but will, with trial and error, get you there. Complex enough that I will only remember the basic functions (e.g., setting an alarm) if it is something I do regularly and then, only after doing so a number of times. For the more complicated stuff, got to keep that manual around.

As the manual points out, automatic time setting does not work if watch is not laying still. Have to lay it on a window sill with 12 o'clock pointing out. So, don't expect to have watch reset to "atomic time" on the fly. Golly, could possibly mean being off milliseconds now and then. :-)

Adjusting the band is not for the timid. I am used to doing so and have the tool to pop the pins. It is necessary to have such a tool. Came with no directions on how to remove links from the band. Do pay attention to the arrows on the inside of the band links. They let you know what direction to pop. And, there are several tiny parts to potentially lose: the pins and the even smaller seats that the pins lodge into. If you are not used to messing with such bands, save the money on the tool and have a local jeweler do the adjusting for you. Paying this much for a watch, why not a few dollars more for a professional (and stress-free) fit.

I believe the watch is attractive although that's not what I bought it for. Not too heavy and well-proportioned given it's size. I am a fairly large fellow and so looks OK on my wrist; might seem too big on a smaller arm.

Since Amazon already explains all the features of the watch I am not going to be redundant, instead I will try to provide my opinion on the general functionality and value of this device.

Pros: The watch is very rugged and durable. It is solar powered so there isn't any worry about replacing the battery every two years. Although rather large in size, the watch is not heavy and does not look ridiculous or strange even on my small wrist. It has a ton of features that work pretty much as advertised and could be very helpful depending on the activity.

Cons: Not a con per se, but more of a warning - some readings such are somewhat inaccurate; altimeter's margin of error is +/- 100 meters, thermometer's margin of error is +/- 4C (while not on the wrist), barometer's margin of error is +/- 15 hPa. I have not yet been able to receive a signal to sync with the atomic clock and I have tried everything the manual mentioned. The compass can be accessed only for 15 seconds after which you have to keep pressing the button to access it again. I suspect this is due to battery life issues.

Overall: I wish I had the option to give it 4.5 stars; however Amazon does not allow it. My .5 reduction is for not being able to sync with the atomic clock, which is a rather important feature of the watch. As far as slight measurement inaccuracies, I am not deducting any points for that since one cannot honestly expect a $260 wrist device to provide 100% accurate measurements on pressure, temperature and altitude. Basically, the watch is exactly what it claims to be, no more, no less and I think it's fairly priced for everything that it offers, I definitely recommend it.
