Over the years I've become pretty good with computers although I would NOT place myself in the guru category. I was looking for something small and easy to carry. I did the research and the Samsung N110 kept coming up with great reviews. Well, I'm adding on my 5 stars.
The netbook is well constructed. Solid. Sleek. The viewing screen looks clean and crisp to my eyes. I have big hands and it was critical that I could type easily and feel the buttons. The keyboard is well constructed and and I can type without a problem. Sure, it took a little practice and I had to adjust to reach the shift button but this was a non-issue. I like the easy blue labelled function button that helps you check battery strength, adjust volume, etc. Well layed out. I had NO issues with booting, setup, etc.
The Samsung comes with a recovery system installed. Automatically recognizes WiFi and alerts you to secure and insecure connections. Google Chrome works well and with a good connection, it connects as fast as my desktop. It has adaptors for Ethernet, media cards, 3 USB ports (2 on the same side), HDMI, ear phones, mic and also has a PC cam.
If you are going to buy this, don't forget that you may need/want to add an optical drive (DVD/CD-R). Add-on's are something to consider when weighing whether or not to purchase a laptop vs. netbook. I purchased the Samsung SE-S804. I loaded the Nero Software on there and it works fine. Again, if you need all the bells and whistles and budget and size are not an issue, you may want to purchase a laptop.
No issues using the track pad either, my big fingers and all. After about 2 hours of use so far, my battery life is at 65%. It charges quickly. I don't see any need to order cooling fans since the netbook doesn't seem to get excessively hot.
There is a ton of freeware to add that you can download that uses up less space than some of the programs that come preloaded (bloatware can be deleted). I am already using OpenOffice for word processing which works well.
Final notes. I ordered my netbook from Newegg. Sadly, Amazon charges are higher although I love Amazon's service. My netbook came with a free mouse. A recommended purchase that comes up on the screen is a Case Logic neoprene case. Uh....nice but hardly ANY storageCase Logic LNEO-10 Ultraportable Neoprene Notebook Sleeve (Black). I'm sorry I purchased it. Look for something with pockets to store your power cord, surge protector, optical drive, etc. Some Targus bag's look good. |

| I've had a lot of laptops, but this one (SO FAR) has been the best. Yes, there's no cd/dvd drive built in. Once you've accepted that: its fast, light, keyboard is nearly standard, and the battery life a HUGE improvement from the typical laptop. I'd buy another today if I had the need. |

| Compared to the earlier NC10 from Samsung, the N110 is a big step down in quality. The build quality on the NC10 was much higher, the N110 is made of cheap flimsy plastic. Also, the NC10 had a matte finish on the screen, the N110 is glossy. |

I rarely write reviews, but felt I could add a little to what the other reviewers have said. I've been using this unit for two weeks, most recently at a week-long conference which took place indoors with occasional outdoor use.
There are two things about this little netbook that take some getting used to.
1. The glossy screen
2. The track pad / mouse pad button
As for the glossy screen, it can be a major distraction for some people. It is very noticeable when you pay attention to it. What I found is that it "disappeared" as I just focused on the application I was using and stopped looking at the reflections. Your attention to the application makes the glossy effect a non-issue - at least in my case. And this worked outside as well as inside. You can adjust the brightness and/or tilt the screen to mitigate most of it too. In other words if you can't help but stare at the reflections, then try to find a netbook with a matte screen.
The track pad is ok. It's on the small side but for me the button took getting used to. It's a single long button that you press on the left side for left-click and right side for right-click. I found it annoying at first to right-click, so I found myself using the keyboard context button more. This button is the right-click equivalent of the mouse.
All in all, this netbook is well built, feels very solid, has amazing battery life (I easily went all day using wireless and MS Office applications) and still had 50% battery left at the end of 6 hours. I would definitely buy this again without question. This Samsung doesn't have any of the issues other brands have. For example, the power supply overheating / charging issue in Asus. This power supply brick is slightly warm to the touch after charging from 10% battery. On top of that the power supply is really tiny compared to any others I've seen.
If you can remember that netbooks are really not laptops and that they have a different purpose, then I think you'll be able to enjoy it for what it is: Light weight, long battery life, compact and portable.

"Great Netbook" | 2009-10-31 |

I do a lot of traveling, and often stay in developing countries. I decided about 4 months ago to buy the Samsung N110 netbook as it looked like it would fulfill my requirements; a laptop that was easy to carry around, with long battery life, easy to type on, and with enough performance to handle all my programs. The Samsung N110 netbook met all my requirements and then some. I upgraded the RAM to 2 GB as soon as I received the netbook.
The battery life was very important to me, as the city where I am presently residing have many electrical power outages, sometimes up to 14 hours without power every other day! My old laptop, a Dell Latitude D610, with the screen brightness turned down, could barely manage 1.5 hours before the battery died. In other words, I couldn't get any work done when the power was out. Now, with the netbook, I can work continuously at least 6 hours and still have battery power remaining. Not only that, I discovered that when I connect the Logitech V20 USB powered speakers Logitech 970155-0403 V20 Notebook Speakers (Black) to this netbook, I get good room volume sound (all built-in laptop speakers sound horrible to me) and it uses the netbook battery so it doesn't rely on external power. When the power goes off, I can listen to my iTunes music or internet radio at room volume for several hours, at least 6 hours with battery power remaining (internet radio is great when traveling). I also like the way the netbook goes to standby mode when I completely close the lid. I can listen to music when I go to bed (with the lid raised about 1 inch) and then just close the lid to shut the music off. It doesn't seem to use up any battery power in standby mode and quickly resumes where it left off when I reopen the lid and press the power button.
I discovered another use of this netbook (something that was never mentioned before). During power outages, I can read for several hours using the light from the netbook screen! It also lights up the room sufficiently to do things around the room. Granted, the brightness of the screen has to be turned up and you must be relatively near the screen to read a book, but it works (you must also turn off the LCD auto-dimming function by right-clicking on the BatteryMgr icon in the taskbar).
I use the netbook to give PowerPoint presentations. Even though the resolution of the netbook screen is 1024 x 600, the resolution is much higher on external monitors and projectors. So far I was able to use the maximum resolution capabilities of the projectors I have used. The presentations are just as sharp and clear using this netbook as when using high-powered expensive laptops. With the long battery life, I don't bother using a power cord and looking for the right adapter for the type of power plug the country uses. I can give PowerPoint presentations for 8 hours without connecting my netbook to external power.
PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Access on this netbook all work very well, and seem just as fast, or faster, than my old laptop. I had installed my own Microsoft Office Pro software.
I also burn DVDs and print LightScribe Labels on them using the Samsung external DVD Writer SE-T084M Samsung SE-T084M/RSBD External Slim Slot Load USB Lightscribe DVD-Writer (Black/Silver). This DVD writer is very elegant and works very well. It uses power from the netbook so it does not rely on external power. Recently I burned 4 DVDs and printed LightScribe labels on them (using best setting) during a power outage. I still had 50% battery power remaining afterwards.
I also use the 41U5008 Lenovo Thinkpad Bluetooth Laser Mouse Lenovo ThinkPad Bluetooth Laser Mouse - Mouse - laser - 3 button(s) - wireless - Bluetooth - stealth black with this netbook. It is small enough to be easily carried around and works well. Its black colored body and red scroll wheel goes well with this black colored netbook with a red stripe.
I also use the Case Logic LNEO-10 Notebook Sleeve Case Logic LNEO-10 Ultraportable Neoprene Notebook Sleeve (Black). This netbook fits well inside it and the Case Logic sleeve gives much better protection than the sleeve that came with the netbook. The Case Logic sleeve has thicker padding, and the netbook zips completely closed inside it but is still quite compact to carry in my hand-carry bag without taking up much room.
This netbook is very useful when traveling for checking e-mails, video and audio conferencing with family and friends (this netbook has a built-in video cam and microphone). I use Windows Live Messenger for video and audio conferencing with friends and family while I am traveling, a good and inexpensive way to keep in touch while being away.
The only thing negative I have to say about the netbook is that my old laptop plays 3D games better. This is a common characteristic of netbooks using low power processors, but I consider it a good tradeoff for the great battery life. |
