"Heart wrenching and Heart warming" | 2009-11-16 |

| This is the best book I have read in years! It took me back to my southern youth in the 60's. I was too young to really remember the events as they happened but I so remember their impact. I also remember vividly the types of racism and hatred so movingly told here. This book is a reminder of just how awful those times were and just how wonderful they were. It was a contradiction that existed in life then. The friendships between all of the women in this book are so complex. They are torn between what exists and what is right. You MUST read this book. It will open your eyes and maybe even open your mind. |

"NOSTALGIC READ" | 2009-11-16 |

| I cannot get this book out of my mind!!! Having a maid and growing up in the South during the 50s and 60s made it even more special to read, as if I was reliving a great part of my childhood. The characters almost leaped from the page into real life...you love some and you hate some, but you were there with them on every page and in every situation. You feel the book, experience the time, and walk away with an understanding you might not have had before, even those of us who lived with The Help. It is the kind of book you don't want to end. |

"Good Story - Wrong Perspective" | 2009-11-15 |

| Stockett's freshman writing debut tells a good story from three different perspectives in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960s. I have no issue with the story itself; I struggle with the non-white perspectives she attempts to portray. Stockett's execution of these chapters show little depth of character and very little really understanding of what it meant to be black in Mississippi. I have heard that she admitted in an interview that she did not intend for the book to be read and was surprised when it became a success. However, I would've hoped that she or her editors might have taken a longer look at the authenticity of the voices of Abileen and Minny before publishing. These 2000-ish perspectives were almost as hollow as the Skeeter's understanding back in the 1960s. Overall, Stockett has good moments in this book - more often than not - from the perspective of her white counterpart - Skeeter. Read it with awareness. |

| Highly recommend - my book group met last night and no one rated it lower than 8/10 and many were 10/10, including me. A joy to read. You'll laugh, cry and learn a great deal about the early civil rights movement in the South. A treasure. |
