"Good Entry-Level Surround Sound Package" | 2010-03-19 |

| I've had this system for about 3 weeks now, and have been completely satisfied. Obviously, with an entry level receiver and speaker package, you aren't going to get the bells and whistles of higher-end models, but this Onkyo system has all I need to enjoy a good movie in my medium sized apartment. For the price, the quality and features are outstanding. Set-up was easy, though I have had a little experience setting up sound systems before. I did read the manual, which has good explanations of features and connection tips and guidelines. One suggestion I have is to make sure you use proper speaker wire gauge. The speaker wires that come with the package looked like 24 gauge, which, in my opinion, is far too thin a gauge for any speaker. I went to Home Depot and bought some good 14 gauge speaker wire (about $25 for 100 ft) for the back 2 speakers and sub, which have a longer wire run, and 16 gauge speaker wire (about $18 for 100 ft) for the front 3 speakers. I could definitely tell the difference with the heavier speaker wire. |

"excellent low-cost home AV system" | 2010-02-23 |

I have a very high-end home AV system in my living room. I wanted something inexpensive to use in our bedroom so my wife and I could watch movies while lying in bed. The Onkyo HT-S3200 home AV system is exactly what I was looking for.
Onkyo packs a lot of features and quality into such a low-cost system. The product specifications speak for themselves, so I won't post them here. This is not an audiophile system, so I would not compare it with one. That being said, this system provides a lot of features and very good sound for so little money spent.
The 110 watt per channel receiver has ample power to fill a bedroom or average-sized living room with sound. The subwoofer provides very good base and compliments the smaller satellite speakers very well. The satellite speaker enclosures are plastic, but there is no rattle from these speakers even at high volume, and they provide very acceptable clarity. I used the included speaker wire for this setup, which looks like it is probably 20-gauge wire. Speaker inputs are color-coded to match the provided speaker wiring making connections very simple. Even better sound might be obtained using 14 or 16 gauge wire, but for my purpose it was unnecessary.
The receiver has two optical inputs for better sound. I used these for our satellite TV and blu-ray player. It would have been nice to have more optical inputs for other things, but that's a lot to ask for this price range. The HDMI input is pass-through -- it does not provide sound to the receiver -- so you will want to use either coaxial or optical inputs for best quality sound.
My only complaint with this system is the volume has to be turned up about half way to get good sound for movies. Playing CDs the sound is ample at much lower settings. But there is no sound distortion even at higher volume settings, so mine is a minor complaint.
If you are on a budget or simply don't want to spend a lot of money for a decent home AV system the HT-S3200 is well worth a look and listen. I have been very happy with this purchase. And after seeing the quality Onkyo builds into their low-end receivers I will definitely give their products a look if I ever decide to update my high-end audio system. |

I bought this system to upgrade an older Kenwood HTIB. What a choice.
Crisp sound. Easy setup. Very strong bass. Rattles the pictures on the walls.
Couldn't be happier.

What it Replaces:
I had a several years-old Samsung all-in-one (which included a 5-disc carousel changer) which relied on a cooling fan--whose bearings were shot. Kinda pointless to have a surround system when any time you try to use it, whatever you're trying to listen to gets drowned out by the squealing of a bad electric motor.
Plus, the sound was decent, but not great. Not a huge advantage over my TV's own speakers.
Impressions:
One of the reasons I chose this system is that, unlike systems that also are disc players, this uses a conventional (read gloriously bulky) amp as its centerpiece. This means I have conventional 8-ohm speakers and the amp can handle additional outputs. (I'm eventually going to run wire down to my basement to put auxiliary speakers for when I want music to fill the house.)
The various sound processing filters are nice and it's been so long since I've heard my music and games on quality speakers, I actually have to get used to how everything sounds again. Love having surround sound for my gaming. Funny how people go on about THX and stuff for movies, but I've honestly watched very few movies that really take advantage of 5.1 sound. EVERY game does. Serious gamers need a sound system. And gamers who, like me, have some (but not tons) of money should take a look at this system. |
