It just boggles my mind that with technology of having closed captioning for over 30 years, ( even my moms old 25inch crt tv has closed caption option) Roku chose to omit this very useful feature. Their design team of developers must be idiots. This product should have never gone to market.

Trying to watch baseball games is an exercise in futility and frustration. Drop-outs, freezing and rebooting occur frequently, often every few seconds (My PC and connection are not the problem). There is no customer service or support basically, either at Roku.com or MLB.com (who refer you to the other party for help), just self-help boards that are iffy at best for resolving issues.

I love my Roku! It's great with Netflix and Amazon vod. I just purchased the newer version, roku xd-s and am selling the hd-xr to my dad who doesn't need 1080p at a discount. The hd-xr is 720p with 802.11n. The new xd-s is 1080p and dual band 802.11n. That's the only reason I'm getting a different one...otherwise it works nearly flawlessly with my internet and netflix service. You can even link it to your facebook and flickr accounts and look at pictures on your tv! My grandkids love seeing themselves on the big 65 inch tv. There are many free videos and music you can access also and more are coming all the time. The only thing I'd say is missing is youtube...hopefully they will add it soon. Oh, and you can take it with you and use it at others' homes, hotels, anywhere you can get wireless or wired internet service that is fast enough to run it.

As a person who has chosen not to pay for any cable or satellite television , i find my hosehold greatly enhanced by this product and think it a brilliant all around artifact . Here's what i miss and want ; Subtitles and or Closed Captions . Here's what i do not miss ; 24 hour news stations (and their talking heads) , infomercials , reality shows , advertisements , edited or chopped up films and docu's , tons of bad or mediocre programming geared toward someone else , virtually everything about cable and satellite T.V. save a few sporting events . Between Roku , Netfix , Amazon (with Prime) , my PC and the printed word in all forms , i've more than i can digest sans 95% of the stupid , loud and obnoxious commercials and so on . I don't have children but if i did , i'd still have the same set up . What i want (almost completely commercial free)!! . When i want it!! . How i want it!! I know i'm on the ground floor of the coolist thing and i could not be happier or crow more in favor . It's not perfect , it's relatively new tech for gosh sakes . Take a chance if you're disgusted by pay Television and see what you think .

|The first roku I ordered did not work out of the box, after finding multiple things to try on the Roku support forum I had to contact Roku support. It took the Roku support specialist over 3 days to contact me via email to tell me to attempt a factory reset via the system menu, which I could not get to since the product would not get that far. 2 days later a different specialist asked me to do a reset, which I already said I had done in the original email.
I ended up returning the product to Amazon (by far the easiest return I have ever done) and getting a new functioning Roku.
The functioning Roku took less than 5 minutes to set up before we were enjoying a movie on Netflix. The system is easy to use and the menus are very easy to navigate. I would recommend this product, but would not recommend contacting Roku support unless absolutely necessary.
