In preparation for my daughter's birth I read at least 10 different books about labor and birth. I found this to be the most thorough, unbiased, and useful of all the books I read.

Many of the negative reviews complain that this book has too much of a "natural birth" bias. Well, this depends entirely on what other books you have read and what biases you already have! Compared to "A Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" or "What to Expest When You're Expecting," it is quite hippie and granola. However, if you are comparing it to "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth" or "Hypnobabies," you will find that this book is much more medicalized. After reading so many books from so many different points of view, I can confidently say that this book strikes a good balance between the two camps.

Sears' clear opinion in this book is that every mother should try for the most natural, unmedicalized birth that she can, without sacrificing sanity or a satisfying, positive birth experience. Artificial pain relief is certainly not banned in this book, merely treated with the caution it deserves.

The scientific studies cited in this book and others clearly demonstrate that medical pain relief can lead to other interventions, such as the use of pitocin and c-section, which CAN have a negative impact on mother and child. Thus, they should be used with caution. I think those reviewers who did not like this book simply did not want to admit that medical pain relief can have these side effects! Any woman who chooses to have an epidural or other relief should not kid themselves into thinking that there is no risk involved in these procedures. Dr. Sears clearly states that there is definitely a place for medical pain relief, but that every woman should strive to have a birth with the least interventions possible, for the safety of both mother and baby. He makes sure to say several times that medical procedures (including pain relief) can definitely be useful in getting an unusual labor back on track, so you should not feel guilty if you need such interventions!

I would highly recommend this book to any and all pregnant women for an accurate, middle-of-the-road view of birth.

I loved this book. It helped me to learn a lot about natural birth, and allowed me to make choices that led me to a wonderful labor. The positions chapter was very useful - although I didn't actually consulted it during labor (impossible!) I remembered them, and the right one to relieve pain would come to my mind at the right moment.

If I had to choose only one book to read about giving birth, this would be it! This book covers everything, giving you the good, bad, and ugly.

I had a natural child birth... I have no doubt that it is because of this book! I felt totally prepared, and calm when I went into labor. I must have read, high-lighted, and re-read this book 3-4 times while I was pregnant. I did not take a birth class... I just read... I read a lot of books, and this was the one that stuck!

The focus is on natural childbirth, but they also are realistic... Things happen and you might not be able to have a natural birth, if that's the case they've got you covered too.

If you are considering getting this book... DO IT!!! Even if you choose to have pain meds, that's great too! This book will go over what meds are out there, how they work on you and if the baby will have any reaction to them. This is truly a Birth Bible!

I love this book! It prepared me for the best birth experience possible and was by far the most positive and encouraging book on birthing that I have read. It covers home birth as well as hospital birth.

I bought this book because I am on bedrest and cannot attend birthing classes. It includes a lot of information, but I found the overall tone to be very negative on the present-day birth practices. It was extremely opinionated, skewed heavily to the authors' experiences, which made me a little turned off.

I am very fond of the Sears family. And this book in the Sears library is the guide to the beginning of your journey with children and becoming attached to them. I think I have learned from their books that attachment isn't just for the child it is definitely also for the parent. Attachment parenting teaches a parent how to understand the child and give them what they need instead of being in a deadlock waiting for the child to figure out how to understand you, the parent. And that is what good parenting is all about. Especially because that makes everyone more happy and parenting much more easy. The birth book is a comprehensive guide to starting the process by understanding yourself as a woman and mother in the birth process. There is history, scientific research, and a lot of heart in this book. While they are definitely pro natural birth, they are more pro having the birth that empowers you as a woman. If that means a medicated birth after reading all the research, then go for it and be happy with your decision. That is what the Sears are really about, being an informed consumer. In other words, we should make our own choices based on knowledge and personal strength. For those that want a natural birth but appreciate research, this book will give it all to you. As a scientist myself, some of the natural childbirth books are too much, but this one has it all for me; just the right mix of good research and a ton of personal experience. After reading this book, I truly feel I have the tools to have a birth that is natural with the ability to make choices that are best for me and the baby if something does not go as planned. If I could thank the Sears personally, I would with a big hand shake and a hug.
