I get the impression that Ms. DaCosta isn't very well liked. I was apprehensive about buying this book thanks to all abject vitriol being poured out here. When it went on sale I decided to swipe it up and I'm glad I did! Whatever anyone thinks of the author personally, the book was very well done and has some great insights and style tips. I didn't find her personality or manner overbearing or distracting at all. I especially enjoyed the advice on locs, how to start them, style and maintain them. It was more helpful to me than most of what I've read or seen online. The celebrities didn't bother me so much either. The woman styles celebrity hair. For years I've admired some of these same heads of hair and was inspired to go natural by their example. It was good to see and hear a little bit about how some of these same celebs care for, style and maintain their hair with their busy schedules -- which are probably as busy and unpredictable as mine. It was helpful and inspiring. DaCosta gives you all the tools and info you need to care for your own hair so that you don't have to suffer the indignity of being ignored and condescended to for hours on end in a foofy salon. You want to avoid languishing for hours in her or someone else's chair paying big bucks to be marginalized? This book will help you do that. It's win/win, though I did find some things a bit lacking in this book.

The info about conditioning the hair seems to me a bit redundant. Who can't read the back of any shampoo or conditioner bottle and get this same advice explained for free? I don't think there were any startling revelations presented in this or any other book that devotes entire chapters and photo explanations on how to use conditioner. What I'd really like to see is how to style, detangle, blow dry, fashion afro kinky hair. If you're over the age of 8 there really aren't that many books out there that explain how to manage and maintain loose hair. There are tons of ways one can achieve an afro, updos for special occasions, professional styles for the office, styles OTHER than locs or braids. It seems the prevailing wisdom is that our hair is simply lying there useless until it's bound, knotted or texturized which for me is maddening. Most of what I and everyone else knows about styling loose hair was discovered by making ourselves human guinea pigs to the process. Braid outs, twist outs, comb outs, blow outs and what not - people have preferences for techniques according to their hair and how they like it. I didn't know any of this, I had to ask around. In general I feel that there just isn't enough out there that talks about the versatility afforded in thickly textured hair and the special techniques there are for detangling and styling the hair safely. I was hoping to see some of that discussed in this book but alas, I was let down in that area. The book does much in many other areas though and does so very well.

I am happy I own this book. Like I've said before, it was very inspiring and the section on locs was really informative. If you don't want to wear braids or locs though you'll have to keep searching for style ideas. There were none offered here.

I was not happy with the way the book read. It seems to me she was mostly talking about her clients. I found that some of the information was useful to me but it wasn't worth the time to read it.

I bought and read this book as a "beginner". I call myself a beginner because I had just transitioned to natural hair -- left relaxers behind. The glossy pictures, beautiful celebs and encouraging psycho-speak gave me the confidence I needed to stay the course, but often the directions for the styles are not in everyday English. I sometimes felt that steps were missing. Then I wondered if the book was too advanced for me. I had never worked with natural hair, so maybe it was too advanced. Ultimately, I went to a natural hair site and got the much-needed advice for daily maintenance and style tutorials for FREE! Not only free, but I realized that the expensive (albeit nice) products like Carols Daughter weren't needed for every style.

I gave this book two stars because a casual read gave me confidence, but it lacked the real meat & potatoes info that is required. I have major doubts about this author's ability to style hair. Or, maybe she can style but can't teach or write. I wouldn't buy for more than $4.50.

These reviews have given me a platform to vent on my experience with Diane Da Costa. I was one of the "fortunate" to have had my hair cut by her. Some years back I decided to grow and be comfortable with my natural hair. Thirsty for information, I researched many books and decided to buy hers. I was so desperate for support that I ran to the trendy salon she worked at in the village in New York City. I was so excited to meet her and have my hair cut by her. I had gone to another hair stylist who cut and messed up my hair badly. I decided to try a high end professional stylist, being this much admired author, to fix the problem. Though the price was way beyond my budget, I decided to have Da Costa cut my hair. Well, cut my hair more than necessary to fix the problem. There I was again with a super short hair cut I did not need or want. Da Costa said return in 3 months, it will all grow even now and your next cut will just be to trim the ends. Still having faith in Da Costa I returned in 3 months. She was very late in arriving to the salon for my appointment with her. I waited for her for 40 minutes! She simply waltzed in the salon like a movie star. Once she got settled and comfortable, she poked me from behind to indicate that she was now ready for me. A poke on my back was how she announced she was ready for me. Another customer witnessing all this just looked at her and then at me in disbelieve. I was ashamed and embarrassed for having put myself through such idiocy. After I told her that all I wanted was a trim, she seemed disappointment that I was not getting more done. I guess her late arrival and way she treated me when she finally got there was like she was doing ME a favor, since I was not one of her high-end, movie star clients. Well lesson learned painfully, both financially and emotionally. Da Costa had personally signed my book and after reading these reviews, I tore out the page and ripped in pieces. Guess I will be donating the book to the public library. I'm glad to have seen these reviews; it gave me the platform to vent what I've been holding in a few years. Thank you all.

I thought this book was a waste of money for the fact that it doesn't really teach you how to maintain anything. There are some minor things in there about self care, but mostly she is saying to see a stylist and buy these products. Yes major advertising in here. There is information on braids, and even relaxers(def not natural) I don't know I thought the title was very misleading.
