I read this book years ago but purchased it for a friend going through a period of loss. I recommend it as one tool to help people grieve; while not every page rang with truth for myself, I do think people can find some solace in it. It's a great book to skim through and find pages that provide direction or support in particular moments of grief, I went back through the book one year after I received it as a gift and found new perspectives and ideas on managing my sadness.

This book deals with the loss of a love either through a break-up or death. It focuses mostly on break-ups but I have had to deal with the loss of a love because of death and this book has helped me tremendously.

The book is a very quick read, maybe 2-3 hours. It is simply a series of "rules" to follow in order to deal with the loss of a love. On the left side of the page is the rule and an explaination and on the right side is a wonderful poem related to the rule.

Merely reading this book moved me along the grief process by at least 50%. It was a huge jump and got me well on the road to recovery. The loss of a love is a horrible, unique experience. Unfortunately, even well meaning friends and family often can't help and actually make the pain worse because they simply don't know what to do or say. This book will guide you out of your pain. It is a must read.

simply one of the best books i have read in my life. every time i suffer a loss, whether it be small or big - i refer back to this book. the poetry is beautiful, the thoughts seem to be exactly what i am thinking. it has literally saved my life more times than i'd liked to admit. thank god for this book.

I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK WHEN MY HUSBAND DIED 19 YRS. AGO. NOW WHEN OUR PARISH HAS A FUNERAL RECEPTION, WE GIVE THIS BOOK TO THE RECENT WIDOW/WIDOWER OR FAMILY MEMBER. THIS IS THE COMMENT FROM THE MOTHER WHOSE SON DIED SUDDENLY AT THE AGE OF 49: "I have begun reading the book and, surprisingly, it does help After my own husband died I was given several books and pamplets that didn't seem to relate to what I was going thru. This book hits the mark."

I am only on page 54 of this little treasure; this is truly written for all of us who have experienced the loss of a LOVE.

I am wavering pretty consistently now between the second and third stages of recovery. I must admit, I still sometimes slip back, only for a short time, to the first. Reading these few pages, I am in awe that my emotions are written as precisely as they were/are experienced.

In Feb I lost my loving dog Mugsy,, in May my wonderful sister-in-law, then in August my young niece, and in September, my exceptional Dad. At the end of January, just 4 months after my Dad died, we received the horrible news that my Mom also had a terminal illness and she survived just 7 more months. All of the deaths, except my niece were the result of cancer. Then, my life came to an end (or so I thought), just 5 weeks after my Mom's death, my husband of 39 years decided he need "to find himself" and walked out.

If I had had this book at the beginning of my recovery, I would had read this over and over...........I was not sure I could even live, so recovery was not even in my thoughts. Had I known then, that just the tiniest spark of light would develop into a constant and comforting light, the seeds of hope may have been planted sooner. This little book could have been that spark! But I did live, and I am recovering quite nicely, and I can assure everyone, this book is right on the mark. Buy it for your friends, family, co-workers, anyone who has experienced a loss. There is hope, life and happiness after loss.

The lovely thing about this book is that you can open it anywhere and glean something helpful from whatever page you're reading. I recommended this book as a resource in my book He's History, You're Not: Surviving Divorce After 40 and it's very unique in its format. Carry it in your purse or pocket and whip it out when you feel really low. I found myself reading it in the bathroom, one of my favorite crying spots because my daughter couldn't see me. I found the most helpful aspect was the book's affirmation of what you are going through rather than always emphasizing moving on. We need to be reminded that what we are feeling is normal and something everyone feels when they have lost a love. The hardest aspect is feeling so alone, that there's no one else who has suffered like you have. This little book will give you some comfort that you're not alone. And my book will too. Get a copy of both.
