Maggie Callanan and Patricia Kelley have truly given the world a gift with their thoughtful book. Not only does this book describe what happens at the point of death, it explains how to deal with the stages of death as they appear. I especially could appreciate the sections that explained how to facilitate a peaceful death.
By reading this book I gained a deeper understanding of death itself and became more aware of how family and friends can make dying a more peaceful process. While this book does touch on a few near-death experiences it is mainly concerned with "nearing death awareness."
The real-life examples throughout make this book highly meaningful and at times brought me close to tears. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has a friend or relative who is near death or is terminally ill. This would also be especially helpful for physicians, nurses, family members and friends of the dying.

Final gifts was recommended to me by a friend who lost her mother a year ago. My own father has terminal cancer and is nearing his transition time. I am forever grateful for the recommendation. Not just for what I got from the book, but what my sisters also received.
We have been able to have very meaningful conversations with one another, with my mother and with my father as he travels this uncharted journey.
The parts of the book where the person who is nearing death talks about conversations on travel, waiting in lines, seeing things that may be interpreted as confusion is extremely helpful.
Final Gifts has brought much comfort to my family over the last couple of weeks and will continue to do so. I am recommending this book to others who are going through the loss of a loved one.
If you are reading this review, I highly suggest you get the book if you have not already done so.

This book is by far the very best I have ever read about the end of life, and what we can learn from those who are dying, and how we can help them meet their stated (and implied) needs. I read this years ago, and reread it last week. I have been involved with hospice work for the past 10 years and have read, read, read nearly everything I can get my hands on in this area. This is still the very best, in my opinion. I have given many copies away over the years and continue to do so.

A friend who had lost her mother after 60 days in the ICU told me to read this book. I did, thankfully, as I lost my mother-in-law very suddenly not long after.
The peace and comfort this book gave me was incredible. I am a Christian, and do believe in the hereafter. Even so, this book helped reduce any lingering concerns or doubts I had about dying.
This book helped me recognize several stages in my own mother's dying process, and helped me understand how I could help her as she was dying. My mother's death was incredibly loving and peaceful, and I owe much of my ability to help to this book.
This book is indispensable! Buy several copies! You are going to want everyone you know to read it!

I bought this book not as a need but as a gift to myself in my ministry. I've not been disappointed! There is much sensitivity and thoughtfulness in what is presented. I've mentioned it to two friends who work in hospice and bereavement and they both have it in their libraries and agree with me when I talk about how profound it is and yet how simply its written and easy to read. The book itself is a gift!
