"Way too Technical"

This book is full of information if you have a PhD. For the average IBS sufferer like myself the information was not all that helpful. The lists are confusing and some contradict eachother. I'm still searching for a better book.
"Scientifically based!"

This book had a lot of scientific background and sometimes became too in depth and difficult to keep reading. It does provide great information on what vitamins and minerals we need to focus on with IBD. It also tells you what foods to use to get them and what foods are good for healing. It's kind of general when mentioning types of foods, but it was helpful. I would read this book as one of several on a list, but not the only book you should read to get a good idea of what to eat.
"I've been cured for 3 years on Dr. Scala's plan!"

I need to start off my review by saying that I've been plagued with chronic ulcerative colitis for seven years. My gastroenterologist had placed me on Remicaid, which eventually created scarring on my liver. Another medication I was placed on gave me pancreatitis. Yet, the straw that broke MY back -aside from the many "accidents" I experienced in public (i.e. losing control of my bowel movements at the local playground), was when this gastro suggested that I remove my colon. After I vehemently chose not to take him up on his suggestion to join an "experimental group" at Mt. Sinaii Hospital in NYC, he suggested repeatedly that I remove my colon. As he put it, "You're already married and you have your kids. It's not big deal if you live the rest of your life with a baggy outside your person!" Needless to say, that was the last time I ever saw this "doctor". He must have played hooky during his Sensitivity Training course!
I scoured through Amazon for a last-ditch effort on healing myself. I had given up on traditional and most alternative medicine and I was desperate and low on cash. My husband and I had sunk thousands of dollars on Internet aloe vera treatments, a nutritionist and an acupuncturist. I made a gazillion shakes and mixed some very nauseating tasting herbs that my nutritionist and acupuncturist had me purchase, but to no avail. My mother made homeopathic treatments that only seemed to worsen my symptoms.
I spent a week in Sag Harbor and while my little ones played on the beach, I held my pen in my hand, wore a sarong (I wore Depends under the sarong in the event of an accident), and underlined every supplement and dietary suggestion Dr. Scala recommended. To my surprise, Metamucil is an imperative supplement to Dr. scala's program. My husband and I went to the local market and I began my treatment. I bought all the other supplements at Mrs. Greens and Trader Joe's, stayed far away from the foods that Dr. Scala stated were a no-no and today I write to you as a SYMPTOM FREE sufferer! It has been three years since that fateful day that Dr. Scala's book arrived at my doorstep, thanks to Amazon.
Please note that I still undergo an annual colonoscopy and sonograms of my liver as a preventative measure. While there appears to be some irritation on my colon, my new gastro's main concern is that I stay in remission. I presently take no medication Last year when I told her about Dr. Scala's program, she waved away the possibility of this diet and encouraged me to continue on with my medication. After all the drama I had experienced with medicine, it is my personal decision to follow a diet solely as my source of healing. I don't recommend this at all for others.
I hope this helps. Godspeed to all sufferers out there!
"Excellent Resource"

This book is a great guide for people with a variety of digestive disorders - and perhaps even for those with other auto-immune illnesses. It contains clear, well-reasoned, thoroughly researched and documented nutrition advice. Also, it's a diet that I could live with (unlike many others!). The author is not selling any products of his own, which enhances his credibility. The only drawback is that he doesn't include any recipes; wish he'd write a cookbook or add some recipes to his next revision.
"Worth reading"

This book provided me with information and insight into issues related to my disease that no doctor has been able to provide in the 9 years since my diagnosis. Although I have yet to put the actual diet piece into practice, the information I am learning is so important and really helping me to feel like there are other solutions to my disease than medications.
