5 Star Rating  "The Book That Changed My Life"2009-09-12
- Reviewed By User: A4VDKNOQRZLVP
This book literally changed my life. I have lived with chronic low-grade migraines and frequent full-blown horrific ones for most of 50+ years. After reading it, I went immediately to my family doctor and had my prescriptions changed. Then I started purging my system of rebound medications and all those triggers (Dr. Buchholz lists pages of them, literally every one he's ever heard from a migraine patient). I discovered things I'd never known, for example that major triggers for me include onions but not shallots; apples and pears but not raspberries; oranges but not lemons; almonds and cashews but not pecans or peanuts; and, among the dreadful ingredients in packaged goods, two huge triggers I would never have known about.

Dr. Buchholz provides novel approaches to migraine control, things I had never heard of despite several years spent with a migraine control programme in a major urban hospital. He covers issues of stress, sinuses and tooth loss, medications, muscle aches, weather, in ways that I have never read about and I have read a lot about migraines. The most fascinating one, however, is diet. I now know most of my triggers by heart but carry a list just in case. And in my files I list first all those things that I CAN eat, to lend a more positive tone, just as Dr. Buchholz is so positive and upbeat in this book.

I regularly give his name and book title to anyone I meet with migraines. My favourite story - leaving my Unitarian Universalist church one morning, I handed my business card with the reference for the book written on the back, to a woman walking out ahead of me. She asked, astounded, because we did not know each other well, How did you know I have migraines? I said Because I sat behind you and you were pressing on the same muscles that used to drive me crazy.

This book changed my life.

I suffer from migraines and bought this book because I wanted to know what causes these and what steps (if any) I could take to stop/reduce/relieve my migraines. "Heal Your Headache" provides a good explanation of what a migraine is and as you recognise the migraine symptoms you quickly build up confidence in the author's credibility on this subject. I am a little bit skeptical about the 3 step approach (the first step is to stop quick fixes) but will try and see what happens.

5 Star Rating  "The program in this book has made a huge difference for me"2009-09-07
- Reviewed By User: AFKEEYHP1BU7A
I know it seems like an overstatement to say that this book changed my life, but it truly has. I starting reading and following the program in this book last October and it has made a huge difference. The first few months were difficult, but it has been worth it.

I have suffered migraines for about 20 years - I'm now 44. It used to be that if I was able to catch it in time and I took Tylenol sinus I could avoid getting a migraine most of the time. If I ever got a full blown migraine I would get sick to my stomach and throw up for what felt like hours. Most of my migraines came on the weekend when my schedule was different (especially if I ate lunch after 12) and I was having a down time from stress. As you can imagine, it was very difficult on my family - my wife and I have 4 kids. I only got migraines at work a few times, but one time it got so bad that an ambulance and parmedics were called for me.

Through the years, Tylenol Sinus became less and less effective. I discovered OTC migraine medicines that were basically caffeine and aspirin and these helped quite a bit. I also went to my family doctor, a neurologist, a chiropractor, and I even considered accupuncture on the advice of a friend, but nothing seemed to help. My family doctor gave me several different medicines and Relpax turned out to be the only Rx medicine that helped - although I would even get them at times after taking it. I once took Imitrex and had a reaction where I didn't think I could breathe. I rushed to a local clinic and they gave me shots that knocked me out.

About two years ago things starting getting worse than ever. When I read "Heal Your Headache" I was desperate. I was getting bad headaches 4 to 5 times a week and they would be "full blown" migraines about 2 to 3 times a month. I was taking OTC migraine meds several times a week as a first resort before I took Relpax - since it was so expensive ($50 after insurance for 12 tablets or 6 doses). Relpax wouldn't work once every month or two and I would end up throwing up and in severe pain.

My doctor recommended that I take blood pressure medicine, even though my blood pressure was borderline. I would have to take it for the rest of my life and it being a success was in no way a sure thing. I changed doctors my new doctor gave me a preventative (Topomax) that was also very expensive, but did me no good at all. At this point I found HYH and began the program.

Getting off the migraine meds was difficult. I suffered through some very bad headaches and at least once it beacame a "full blown" migraine with nausea and vomitting. Eliminating everything from my diet was hard, but by about Christmas I got the hang of it - this was a hard time to get off the diet, but getting a migraine with my family over the holidays (a common occurance in the past) would have been worse. Since the first of the year I think there has only been one time where my headache got bad enough where I felt like I had to take Excedrin Migraine - this was in early January. I've found about 5 or 6 food items that are definite triggers and I have to take Nortriptyline on a daily basis. Caffeine, chocolate, pepperoni (nitrates), msg (not always easy to know what has this)and orange juice are my major triggers.

I now have minor headaches once or twice every month or two and I can usually relate them back to a trigger. Their duration is also much shorter than before and definitely not as severe. I don't worry about my schedule change on the weekends causing problems and I've actually been able to diet and lose some weight. My blood pressure is now well within the normal range and I don't get colds as often (I'm not sure if this is coincidence or not, but it used to be that just about every cold turned into a sinus infection - this hasn't happened since last year). I don't often say that things change my life (outside of my faith), but this book has done that. It may not work for everyone, but it definitely has been a great find for this migraine sufferer of 20 years. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Good book. Have had migraine headaches for over 20 years. This book has some new thoughts on migraine pain that I have not heard of from any of the doctors/specialists that I have seen until my newest doctor told me to buy this book. I believe a lot of what is in here makes good sense. I am already having fewer headaches with just some minor lifestyle changes.

I suffered with Migraine for over 28 years. Two years ago I left a career that I loved because I could not function without taking a great deal of pain medication. Last summer I was diagnosed with Chronic Daily Migraine by a doctor at the University of Washington Headache clinic. I read this book a year ago and felt that he was writing about me on every page. The doctor at the Headache clinic helped me get off the pain medications and encouraged me to follow the book, which I have done. She actually asks all of her headache patients to read it and follow it. I started seeing results right away. It's been 12 months and I've waited to write the review until I felt like I could give it a fair, honest and proven evaluation.

I am almost completely headache free. I have an occasional headache, but nothing like I use to have. I can take an Aleve and keep going without any problem. I feel like I have my life back. This book has been an amazing gift to me and my family. I am forever grateful that Dr. Buchholz took the time to write it.

I've never understood migraines the way that I do now. I am able to monitor myself and know which day it might be ok to have a bite of something on the trigger food list. 99% of the time I still follow the restrictions to the letter. I have been a very healthy eater in the past but didn't realize that I was eating migraine triggers at every meal...walnuts, avocado, oranges, yogurt and the list goes on. Who knew? I sure didn't.

It has not been easy, but it has been worth it. I think every step of the 1-2-3 approach is important. This book is well thought out, well written and stays on my desk for easy reference. The plan absolutely worked for me.
