This book has what you need to know about physically running (nutrition, gear, durations and distances, injury prevention, etc) but it ALSO has something super important that so many others books don't have: weekly guidance on your thoughts and goals, and inspiration. It gives you positivity and drive, and techniques to use it. Great book! I'm running my first marathon in 2 days and am totally prepared, totally at peace.
"Not a one-size-fits-all program"

I just ran my first 1/2 marathon 3 days ago using this book. My intention was to run my first marathon but it just didn't work out that way.
I am not completely new to running (low mileage) but it was put on hold for grad school then 2 children came along and my running has been non-existent. I've always wanted to run a marathon and I committed to doing it this year. I began by using the Couch to 5k program (highly recommend) to get up to where I needed to be before beginning the training program in this book.
I went by the book and all seemed to be going well until my first 16 mile long run. After that run I had a terrible pain on the outside of my right knee that was diagnosed as bursitis. I followed Dr.'s orders and took 3 days off running taking ibuprofen 3x/day. I gradually increased mileage after that to be hit with pain on the inside of my knee. At this point I saw an Orthopaedist who specializes in sports injuries. I now had tendonitis and bursitis on the inside of my knee and had to take another week off with a few sessions of physical therapy. He informed me that unless I wanted surgery the marathon was a no-go but I could still train for the half. It turns out the mileage increases were just too much in too little time for me.
I realize that many have used this to finish their first marathon and that's super, but this cannot be seen as a one size fits all type of book. The mileage increases are severe and there are those of us who are not physically made to be able to do it in such a short time. When you look at the bios of the runners they profile, many are young, had run in high school or were still running, and/or had already finished a marathon or two. So when they keep harping on the fact that only ONE person who followed the program didn't finish a marathon, you need to keep in mind how you fit into the profiles of those who did.
Overall, it did have some good advice and I credit it with helping me finish the half, it was just a bit too high on itself and needed to make room for the biomechanical differences that naturally occur among us.

I want to thank this book for getting me over the finish line. This is a WONDERFUL book for anyone just hoping to finish the marathon. I'm proud to say I finished the with a time of 6:44. The commonsense, take your time approach was so, so helpful. I realized that part of my problem was mental. This book helped me get over the mental aspect of running 26.2 miles. This book was very easy to read and understand. They often repeated their advice to make sure the reader understood what they were saying. For example, they often reminded the reader this book was to help a runner finish, that's it...not set an artificial time.
Again, if you need help convincing yourself about whether or not you can run a marathon...this book will give you the edge to finish...again, to the writers of the book..THANK YOU!!!!!!!
"Perfect tool if your goal is to simply run your first marathon"

I used this book as a way to successfully train for my first marathon and had no running experience of any kind. I was a 33 year old male who decided to run a marathon as a way to challenge myself and lose some weight. The training schedule although may be low miles for many marathoners, is about all I can manage with my lifestyle. I continued to read many other articles on running and talked with experienced runners as well. Two pieces of advice for any new runner who wants to use this book as a guide to their first marathon; 1. Start running much sooner than one month before the 16 week schedule begins. I started running about 8 months prior and got shin-splints in the first month, that would have ended my training if I got the problem during the training schedule. 2. Follow the advice of not setting a time goal, no matter what your finishing time is it will be fantastic if your primary goal is to successfully run a marathon!

Great book. I ran my first marathon on my own, with my own training style and after reading this book I have signed up for my second marathon. I know using the outline given in the book, I will be my time.

This book I loved. I have always wanted to run a marathon. This book has motived me to do so. It shows the training program in clear terms. Also guides you through the right running shoe. it also touches on the right diet and weight training as well as streching. Granted this book is all about just finishing a marathon not pushing for speed. The book gives several examples of students who had taken the course and their expereinces. I liked the fact that the individuals were of all ages and background. Their stories were my favorite. Very inspiring messages. The book is an easy read. You feel as though you are there taking the course with everyone else. No wonder this college class has a raffle in order to get in.
