| I purchased Care of the Soul so that I could have my own copy after returning the copy of Care of the Soul that I had borrowed from the library. The author's approach is best suited for a reader who is highly educated and can benefit from the author's skillful, extensive usage of Greek mythology and psychological in-depth principles. The average person who is attracted to the book's title "Care of the Soul: a Guide for Cultivating Depth and Sacredness in Everyday Life" would not find this book to be a simple, down-to-earth practical "common sense" type of self-help "manual for everyday living." For those who can understand and appreciate the author's approach and insights, this is a very valuable and worthwhile book. |

"If we persist in our modern way of treating depression as an illness to be cured only mechanically and chemically, we may lose the gifts of soul that only depression can provide." ~ pg. 146
Thomas Moore believes that we have neglected our souls. So in this book he seeks to provide both advice and spiritual guidance. However, to me at least, there seems to be very little in the way of guidance. There is nothing really practical about "caring" for the soul besides dream analysis, reading poetry and creating art. Most of the book focuses on mythology and how it relates to real life.
Thomas Moore also uses stories from his own practice as a psychologist to further illustrate his points. He discusses marriage, creativity, money, family, narcissism, love, jealousy, envy, power, depression, illness and work. Throughout the book he makes constant reference to the ideas of Freud and Jung. I'm not sure what he exactly means when he says: "discard the salvation wish." He does talk about Jesus quite frequently but doesn't expand on this subject.
In sections of this book Thomas Moore talks about gods and goddesses and seems to be in favor of polytheism. Still, whenever I read a book by Thomas Moore I end up understanding my life more as he makes sense of the complexities of life. If you love reading about mythology then this book will interest you.
While this book was more highly readable than Soul Mates, I much preferred reading Dark Nights of the Soul.

| The book I was sent was in very good condition, only having a few small water marks at the bottom of a few pages. I would have stated this in the description of the book. Other than that, very clean and appears pretty much like new. Thank you for your honesty and quick delivery! Very satisfied. |
