Here is what people are saying about the Effortless Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician Within
4 Star Rating  "This book changed my music philosophy profoundly"2010-03-12
- Reviewed By Jonathan D. Harnum from Chicago, IL
I have to make the disclaimer that reading this book resulted in a sea change that deeply affected my philosophy and approach to teaching, learning, playing, and listening to music. It came along at just the right time to make a big impact on me and because of this, I had to revisit it as I think about The Practice of Practice. In my re-reading of Werner's book I see again a wisdom and a reverence for Music that still shines through. I still recommend the book highly, but on the re-reading I notice some things that may turn off some readers, and I'd like to address these because even if you have a gem in a pile of dirt, you'll still want to sift through the dirt so you can put that gem in your pocket to dazzle people with later.

That metaphor is a little strong, though; I wouldn't necessarily call it "dirt" when KW gets a little preachy. It's kind of touching if taken in the right spirit. Werner has a very spiritual approach to music that at times borders on what a friend of mine calls, "hippy, trippy-dippy, New-Agey nonsense." I don't believe that is true about most of the book, but I can see where he's coming from. Don't let that turn you off. Especially useful in this book are Werner's thoughts on how fear can (and usually does at some point) affect one's playing, and even the way one listens to music. Fear of any sort doesn't result in good playing and it may well force you into quitting altogether. This is bad. If you can get a handle on fear early in your pursuit (or at any phase of your journey), you're better off than most.

Werner's chapters on fear start around page 51, so if you can't get into the earlier material, skip ahead to these gems which alone are worth the price of the book. The chapter titles are: 5--Fear, the Mind, and the Ego, 6--Fear-Based Practicing, 7--Fear-Based Teaching, 8--Fear-Based Listening, and 9--Fear-Based Composing. After writing eloquently and persuasively about how fear can hamstring our playing, Werner then offers a solution to help deal with the fear, which may well never go away. He offers up some meditations and ways of thinking that can help you get over those fears, and though some of it may sound New-Agey, I can tell you it's worked well for me, though I've altered his philosophy slightly to fit my own beliefs more closely.

The book's focus is on jazz improvisation, but this is just a way to focus the conversation. The wisdom within these 191 pages can be used by any musician of any level. The notion that "there are no wrong notes" is something anybody and everybody should attempt to adopt in their exploration of sound. Despite the sometimes preachy nature of the book, it is one of my more highly recommended books for those who want to play music. Hope you like it. Hope it's helpful.

Have fun. Good luck.

Great Book, Kenny makes sense of a lot of things that every musician struggles with. He helps you deal with everything from self esteem problems to procrastination. You won't regret it.

A very well written guide to the philosophy of music making. Not something you can complete by the time you finish the book. I made the mistake of stopping when I couldn't perform the meditation exercises later in the book. Just read it cover to cover, and go back when ready to review.

5 Star Rating  "It really does help"2009-06-28
- Reviewed By Ron Itzikovitch
I really enjoyed reading the book, and many times i found myself thinking "hey, he knows exactly what I am thinking of myself, my playing, and music in general". it really helped me realize many things about my state of mind as a musician, and most importantly it really helped me make the changes i longed for and which I'm still working on and things just keep getting better. on top of that, it helped me enjoy music more, and actually improved my playing by adding more depth to it. I recommend this book to any musician.

5 Star Rating  "Best book on the subject of making music"2009-06-19
- Reviewed By P. Andrews
As someone who is "new" to jazz, I started becoming overwhelmed when I looked at ALL the material there was. How to create lines, different new chords, all the tunes, ETC etc.. It all seemed like so much there was no way i was going to learn all of it and in a proficient way as to be a good player! Well Kenny gave me a great insight through his book on how to "not care". And through not caring about how to play "valid jazz" I was free to create the music I heard in my head! I also always found my playing was either WONDER-FULL or was in a rut.. and if it Was wonderful it was probably about to be in a rut and Kenny showed me why that is. This book has so many great things to offer, philisophical insights, tips on HOW to practice which was great for me, different meditations, etc.. And whenever I lose sight of what my real goal is in playing music (connecting with my inner self) I go back and read different parts of the book again (step 1-4) and it sparks something. I really wish to go to a seminar givin by Werner someday just so I can thank him for writing such a great book! JUST BUY THIS BOOK

4 Star Rating  "You can't practise everything on this level"2009-05-28
- Reviewed By Fcleff from Ontario, Canada
The key to this book is at the bottom of Page 170 "(...)You can't practice everything at this level - there just isn't enough time. Many things come up in your career that require you to practice as quickly as possible and hope for the best. You cannot - repeat - CANNOT consciously force this focus in your playing or practicing(...)"

I believe the technique explained in this book could work if used in addition to more traditional ways. Never as the only way of learning things.

The other part I have problems with is the fact that he states we must keep practicing the same thing until we master it completely. The trick is there is always room for improvement. You can always play something better, faster or in a more interesting way. When should we draw the line?

Good book nonetheless. Definitely recommend.
