| This book is another in the successful list of Thich Nhat Hahn's books. He balances his stories with meaningful lessons on the act of mindfulness. If one is looking to enhance the practice of right mindedness, this is one to read! I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt it to be slightly more personal than some of his others. |

| I was looking for a book that would talk to me about the practice of mindful meditation, the subtle nuances of practice and some common instances of mis-identification of meditative states. What I heard was a lot of jargon, no offence to the Zen master, maybe something got lost in translation. This was written a long time ago and likely his later works have dropped some of the rote instructional tone. I would recommend 'mindfulness in plain English' by H.Gunaratana. |

| The only negative I found about this book is that you are left wanting to read more from this guy and about the subject. His techniques about mindfulness and living in the present are insightful and even inspiring. Even though this book is mostly about mindfulness techniques, I found it very entertaining. From the book you feel that Nhat Hanh lives what he writes. |

"Meditation for the rest of us" | 2009-03-23 |

Some see meditation as a discipline, others as a method of escape from a hectic world, but according to Vietnamese Buddhist, Thich Nhat Hanh, meditation is neither a strict discipline nor an evasion: "it is a serene encounter with reality."
Using examples such as washing the dishes (of course most of us have dishwashing machines now, but any simple repetitive activity will suffice), Hanh tells us that "While washing the dishes, one should only be washing the dishes." We shouldn't be rushing through one `chore' to get to whatever it is we are planning to do later. When eating an orange we should be aware of each wedge, each individual bite, and not mindlessly consuming while thinking about what comes later. In short, our life consists of what we are doing at this precise moment.
Only by being aware of the present moment can we control our actions. If we are angry, for instance, we should be aware of the fact that we are angry. This awareness leads to a choice: we can maintain our anger or let it go. We are free to act, but our action now becomes a conscious choice; there can be no excusing that action. "The essential thing is not to let any feeling or thought arise without recognizing it in mindfulness."
"The Miracle of Mindfulness" goes on to cover the simple fundamentals of breathing, posture and contemplation all within the gentle framework of mindfulness. Not so much a discipline or escape but a meditation method for the rest of us -- a mindfulness we can apply within the midst of our hectic world. |

I've always been the type of person that's always out in space. Always thinking about the future. "If I only had this or if only I could do this my life would be better." Not realizing that happiness and peace could be found by being mindful of the simple things in the reality of now. Like washing the dishes, eating a tangerine..etc.
Have you ever ate a piece of chocolate and then when it was gone, realized that you barely even tasted it because you were thinking about something else? This book will help you increase your awareness of what's going on around you, and help keep you from letting life pass you by.
The techniques in the book have to be practiced, and I would recommend you read it twice to fully understand the simple, but deep thought in the book.
