"Interesting Nantucket History"

Having read the Mayflower by Mr. Philbrick some time ago and knowing how he was motivated to write that book, it interested me as to his motivation for this book. I was not dissapointed as the book is through in facts and presentation. As you already know, his writing is very vivid and complete not leaving the reader constantly guessing or speculating as to what transpired. Also it was a selection for our Sailing Book Club which motivated us to read it. Glad we did.

Nathanial Philbrick tells a gripping story of men abandoning their wrecked ship in the middle of the vast pacific ocean. He sets the stage by informing the reader of the origins of the Nantucket whaling industry and its quest for whale oil, a product used in lighting lanterns which extended the day until displaced by Edison's electric light bulb. You'll learn a lot about the social makeup of 19th century whaling communities and the ships that supported their economies. You'll learn about navigation techniques and you'll also learn about what went into provisioning such surprisingly large ocean going craft. You'll learn what desparate men due when faced with starvation and death at sea in a small boat.
It's a nicely paced tome which keeps your interest, all within the crux of a tale founded in the elements of survival as lived by the sailors on the whaleship Essex. Theirs is a true quest for survival, the kind that is real and for keeps. It's a page turner, don't miss it.

My husband couldn't put this book down once he started reading. Based on fact and an inspiration for Melville's "Moby Dick", the harrowing life of the whaling ships and crews of yore is vividly portrayed, especially the voyage of the "Essex" where desperation meant resorting to cannibalism.
Yep...this book has already been reviewed by multitudes of people, so I will only say that this is a very well-written book that you will probably enjoy reading. It is one of those books that you just want to keep reading until you are done and then you are sad you are done reading.
"How does this novel stack up with the Penguin Version?"

I haven't read this book, but I was wondering how this book stacks up with the Penguin version 'The Loss of the Whale Ship Essex, Sunk By A Whale?' From what I understand, this novel is a retelling of events while the Penguin Classics is the actual accounts of two of the crew members? I'm a bit torn as to which one I should read/purchase. All comments are very much appreciated.
"Good for fans of Shackleton, excellent companion to Moby-Dick"
I have read and enjoyed Ernest Shackleton's books of exploration and adventure sailing to and traversing Antarctica. Though "In the Heart of the Sea" lacks the gripping first-hand narrative of Shackleton's memoirs, this book is truly gripping with its depiction of the hard life of these shipwrecked whalemen. The author, Nathaniel Philbrick, draws from first-hand accounts of the Essex tragedy and supplements the first-hand accounts with his own research, maps, and explanations of whaling and whaleships. Philbrick's depiction of 19th century Nantucket, Quakers, and whaling culture add to the story and place the decisions and actions of the shipwrecked crew into the context of their times and culture. I feel that had I only read a the first-hand accounts (which I intend to do someday), I would not have understood the reasons why the men acted as they did following the loss of their ship. Most importantly, Philbrick's telling of the Essex tragedy fills in the omissions and exaggerations of the first-hand accounts, and offers a modern perspective on their decisions.
Having also recently read Melville's "Moby-Dick" for the first time, I was quite interested to read "In the Heart of the Sea" to learn more about whaling. This book covers some of the technical aspects of a 19th-century whaleship and whaling which were hard to gather from the text of "Moby-Dick". The book includes some diagrams of the whaleship Essex, which I assume is fairly representative of Melville's vision of the fictional whaleship Pequod described in "Moby-Dick".
