I am a serious knitter, but I am not an advanced knitter. Besides my lack of skill and experience, I am extremely ADD. So, this book is better than I expected, it is insightful and funny. It shows diagrams and written instructions for most practical stitches such as the different kinds of cast on stitches. So, if you are like me and can just knit and purl and have at least average intelligence or less-like me, this book is the answer to all the problems that arise in knitting. Some have said she lectures about gauge, but do you really want to knit a sweater and find it too big or worse, too small? I cannot wait to purchase all her other books, I feel that I will enjoy them as much and look forward to designing my own sweaters, with EZ's guidance. This is the best knitting book that I have seen, and I whole heartedly recommend it. I want to say this to all the people who gave this book less than five stars-patience-it is a virtue and necessary for knitting more than a scarf!

It's a great book, honestly, but I need someone sitting there with me talking me through it. If you are like me, stick to joining a knitting club in your local area, then buy the book later!

I'm a knitter. I wanted this book for my library so when I knit sweaters I don't do it in pieces but from the top down. Elizabeth Zimmermann thinks much like I do. I don't like purling or sewing pieces of a sweater together so she has given me the seamless sweater. This book is so full of help for knitters, it is a must read and reference.

This recaps almost verbatim information in her other books (especially Knitters ALmanac)that I own. I would say purchase one or the other but not both. That being said, this is written to give the knitter the confidence and knowledge to knit any project with their gauge, yarn, patterns etc. The background master plan not a line-by-line guide. Excellent information for knitters who want to understand the how-to's

This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. Elizabeth Zimmerman has such a distinctive way of writing - you feel like you are listening in to one of her workshops. An absolute bonus were the many tit-bits of insightful and clever ways of dealing with many day-to-day knitting issues. I especially liked her way of shaping shoulders - why had I not thought of this before? If you have been knitting for a while so you know which aspects of knitted garments don't seem "quite right", then you will gleam many practical gems from this book.
