Here is what people are saying about the Life of Pi
3 Star Rating  "Next Read?"2009-10-12

This is an improbable but enjoyable tale written with a style that is sometimes, but not always, totally engaging.

What is immensely enjoyable is the sardonic relationship between a small boy cast adrift on a life boat with only a grumpy Bengal Tiger for company. Yann Martel's ability to carry this allegorical 'dialogue' for the best part of the book is simply outstanding.

I enjoyed Life of Pi and I'm very pleased I read it but am a little surprised at the praise bestowed by so many. Don't let that put you off for a moment though - I do seem to be in the minority with this view as most reviewers rave about it.

What to read next, well if I wished to 'keep the mood' this book left with me it would have to be The Kite Runner.

4 Star Rating  "Tragic error in ending"2009-10-06
- Reviewed By User: A14LPL0N9AUBUE
I listened to the audio CD, which until the end I hugely loved ... The ending is a serious literary error. Gratutitious, sophomoric. It wouda took GUTs for Martel to just end his fabulous story when Pi beaches on Mexico's shore, wrap up his relocation to Canada, and just humbly GO AWAY. But Martel. IMO, indulged. He meddled. Coudn't leave well enuf alone. The Japanses guys are a silly ploy, and the alternate story Pi offers them, IMO, was material that came from an earlier draft--material Martel just coudn't let go of--and perhaps began the earlier draft, all aboard the lifeboat dying--"And I alone survived", a la Job--and then the adventures of the lone survivor begin. Tacking all this nonsense on at the end makes a anticlimatic point, if at all, and BREAKS THE SPELL SO WONDEFULLY SPUN! It's okay, Yann, to just tell an inspired story and just get OUT OF THE WAY!

5 Star Rating  "Pi's animal story"2009-09-16

This is a story I will consider rereading, so it's worth five stars. I liked Pi's animal story a lot more than the realistic version, too. Quite interesting is the Oika representatives' finding similarities between the versions. Readers tend to find a spiritual meaning in this book. The world will benefit with Hindu, Moslem, and Christianity mixing within one boy. Also of a spiritual nature is Pi's spoken appreciation for Richard Parker's presence through the ordeal. The storytelling raises the account from the factual to the fabulous.

5 Star Rating  "Great for the Symbolic Reader"2009-08-06

I read this book for a Literature class at my university a couple of years ago, and I still consider it to be one of my favorites. Though, I am one to dissect the book and symbolism within which is why reading it was such a pleasure to me.

This book is an interesting read for anyone, but it is so much more than just a story of a boy being lost at sea. The reader fully experiences his journey by the descriptive details included within the novel.

If you are a symbolic reader like myself, you will appreciate this book and enjoy understanding each of the parts of the boy's life from the two guys with the same name (Kumar) to the meaning of the Bengal tiger.

5 Star Rating  "A Must Read"2009-08-06
- Reviewed By User: A2E5L7VBXR77LQ
I loved this book. I think some of the people who have reviewed this novel have misunderstood what the book is really about, as I did the first time I read it. For me the book was about how people want to know the "truth" about God and religion, and how they sometimes miss the better story by while searching for the truth. The beginning is a little slow, but stick with it. The ending is fantastic. It reminded me of the book "Big Fish" which has a similar theme.
