Here is what people are saying about the Straight Man : A Novel (Vintage Contemporaries)
4 Star Rating  "Thoroughly Entertaining"2009-08-24
- Reviewed By User: AW14WDMTH3ZMM
After "Empire Falls", this is second Richard Russo book I've read. My expectations were high when I picked up "Straight Man", and I was not disappointed. It was thoroughly entertaining, funny, thought provoking, and a quick read too. There were times when I had to consciously stop myself from laughing out loud. The plot itself won't win any prizes but the delivery is par excellence. Along the way (as in Empire Falls), Mr. Russo makes poignant observances on life and what we love about it.

5 Star Rating  "Somehow, it seems to make sense while it's happening"2009-08-20

The most amazing thing about this funny, funny book, in retrospect, is that it never seems to be reaching or forcing it. Which is weird, because any synopsis you read makes it seem completely over the top. This is a wonderful highwire act in which everything *just* makes sense.

Writing funny material isn't easy, and isn't appreciated enough. This is one of the few funny novel-length books I've ever read. Russo is in a class by himself.

3 Star Rating  "The intra-university experiences of a man-part obsessed academian"2009-07-22

Because I enjoyed Russo's novel, Empire Falls, I read this along with a friend at her suggestion. Based on the prologue (an excellent, previously published short story about young Hank trying to con his folks into getting him a dog), I initially felt comfortable in my decision. Even further on, forty-nine-year-old William Henry "Hank" Devereaux, Junior's humor, wit, and obnoxiousness is pretty entertaining. As chair of the English department at a college in Railton, PA, he has to deal with colleague's concerns, especially if rumors of staffing cuts turn out to be true, and issues related to his family. University staffers are the main players in the story (sometimes literally, as in the case of Tony). A friend, Teddy, is infatuated with Hank's wife, Lily (the only normal-seeming one, conveniently out of town helping her racist former cop father during most of the story). Hank, in turn, has a crush on not one but three different women: his secretary, Rachel, an aspiring writer; Meg, his Irish Catholic drunkard friend's daughter; and Bodie Pie, the (stereotypically lesbian) head of the Women Studies department. On the family front, daughter Julie and son-in-law Russell, two of the few unrelated to the school, are having marital and financial issues and his mother, also a writer, tries to deflect her landlord suitor neighbor's advances (though she accepts his help) as she anticipates her ex-husband's return to town (having dumped her forty years prior for a trophy wife). Additionally, there are students to deal with, a nose injury (courtesy of a female colleague), and an on-camera budget-related threat to poultry.

Even with the varied, sometimes entertaining cast of characters, the ongoing urinary-urge man-part focus, Occam's Razor obsession (title of Part One as well as his dog's name), and stereotyping (even as intended satire) ruined it for me. Better: Empire Falls by Richard Russo.

Each novel I read by this man I say is my favorite. So this one is the most recent and is now my favorite. I love the character development; this book actually had me laughing out loud toward the end. The people developed by Russo are people I'd like to meet. There is always just enough future unknown to keep me reading and really wanting to know what happens next to these folks. The main character, as always, is a likeable guy with complex parent, woman, and friend issues. Fantastic read. Just keep on writing, and I'll just keep on reading!

I recently read "Empire Falls" and loved it and then began reading the author's other titles. I have liked each book and would recommend them all with 5 stars but "Straight Man" is my absolute favorite. At times I would just laugh out loud and other times feel so sad for Hank. My sister and I share books and she agrees this is also her favorite. Am looking forward to his newest book.

When I put this book down I tried to remember the last time anything had made me laugh out loud so frequently. Some experience in academia preferred but not required. The absurdity of the Russo campus life will resemble workplaces beyond the college or university including any office where the average deem themselves intellectuals.
