A haunting, astonishing piece of fiction. The author's background as a playwright shows in the nonstop present-tense narration, which would be clunky and annoying in less-skillful hands. But Grimsley can write circles around most other writers, and the technique actually works to great effect. This is not only one of the best gay-themed American novels; it is one of the best American novels.

Grimsley's Dream Boy is one of the best books that I've ever read. Period. It's really that good. I usually never bother writing reviews, but this book takes it all. Not only is Grimsley's style amazing in every way, but the story just blew my mind away! The characters, the setting, the plot-- utterly believable to a point when I empathized with the protagonist. It's a book that'd really make you smile that secret smile and frown when your heart strings are tugged. Highly recommended. If I could, I'd give it more than just 5 stars.

this book is not large, but is wonderful as though it were. the other reviews say it better than i am able to...so i shall simply mention that this story is endearing and sad and i wish the text kept going for pages and pages more. a lovely book this is.

I've found it very hard in this day and age to find a very well written 'gay-themed' book. I am often very critical of what I read and will only give a book so much room before I have to set it down. When I first came upon 'Dream Boy' I had heard nothing of it. I asked around and it seemed as if no one in my small town had heard of it either. It intrigued me for that singular reason.

I bought this book and I am now so very glad that I did. This book literally took my breath away. The words are so very simple and it took me only a day to read it, but the emotion that is placed behind each line, the feelings that you can harvest from each word. I have not read anything like that since my nearly month long session with 'Wraeththu'.

Grimsley has easily made it into some of my most coveted authors. I can only hope that others will not be put off by its simple nature and its small appearance. I have heard a few complaints about the ending, but I think it was marvelous. It took me a second read to fully understood what had happened and when I did, it was a shock. It was so heartbreakingly beautiful and I gladly recommend it to anyone who needs a breath of fresh air.

When I began reading this book, I could NOT put it down! The first night, I read through about half the book and had to force myself to put it down for the night. The next night, I finished it.

This book is absolutely beautiful in every way. The descriptions the author uses are simple and straight forward, but they are still very effective and moving. You can tell how much of a struggle it is for these two young boys to stay away from each other. They can't seem to get enough of each other. But believe me; it's not all sex all the time. This is a REAL story unlike some of the others out there that are nothing BUT sex. That gets very annoying.

Anyhow, Dream Boy is full of romance, suspense, and almost anything else that makes a novel great. Dream Boy is a mixture of everything good and evil. If you're gay and you like a good read, this book is totally for you. You'll definitely enjoy it. I heard that they are supposed to be coming out with a movie for it soon. Let's hope it's as great as the novel.
