"His writing and knowledge of the interworkings of Washington is unmatched!" | 2009-11-12 |

I do not remember how I stumbled upon Vince FLYNN but after coming here and reading the reviews a couple of weeks ago I decided to start at the beginning of his work and read my way to present day. I find FLYNN to be a wonderful and insightful writer. My career allows me to be involved in Washington politics and federal government. I really don't read too many political thrillers because I sometimes feel the authors won't have accurate or real knowledge of the way things would really happen and take place (like a bad hollywood movie). It was the complete opposite with this novel and the other FLYNN novel that I'm reading now. FLYNN writes his novels from an angle where it feels like he has been working in Washington for years at all levels. I was very pleased with the way he talked about the Secret Service, special ops, politicians, reporters, etc., He leaves no aspect of the Washington "circus" untouched. I loved the real life personalities of his characters, their resemblance to the politicians of today, and the hindrances involved with partisan politics. I won't go into that too much because I don't want to reiterate what has already been said in 100 other reviews. With that said, I found this book amazing and I am so glad I bought this and (his next novel) Transfer of Power at the same time because as soon as I put this one down, I walked right into the next one as if they were the same book. This book had my heart racing and literally sitting on the edge of my seat figuring out what moves the government and its enemies will make next. I wanted to read this book in the bathroom, bath tub, red lights, lunch breaks, dinner breaks, and every free minute of everyday I had until it was done. I have not been this excited about a novel in a long time. It reminded me of the best episodes of the TV shows 24 and The Unit. I thank the author and the other readers so much for their reviews that lead me to this master writer. He is truly unmatched.
P.S. I intentionally left specifics about the novel out bc I feel you really don't need it and some of the reviews contain so much info it spoils it for you. If you love the TV series "24", thrillers, murder mysteries, or would even like a fiction view of the interworkings of US government and how people may behave if the crap hits the fan, this book is for you. |

| The Library Journal's review of this book is so blatantly biased as to be laughable. Who are these people anyway? Moving on.... this book, while not the most realistic story Flynn has written, presents the themes of service, honor, and personal responsibility that he carries on throughout his later books. Perhaps that's what irritated the Commies at Library Journal..... Anyway, lighten up, everyone: it's a novel, and a pretty good story at that. It certainly held my interest. If you're reading these reviews to see whether it will hold yours as well, if you had simply purchased the book and started reading, you'd know by now. |

| If you are a Vince Flynn fan, this is the first of the series. I think this is one of his best novels. I read some of the his books out of order, and this one is different from the rest. It is before Mitch Rapp enters the scene, and helps explain some things later in the series. If you have read some of his other novels or not, this one kept me up late at night, as I could not put it down. |

| This is Vince Flynn's first effort. No Mitch Rapp in this one. I see why he got published nationally after reading Term Limits. One of his sources is Richard Marchinko and I picked up Red Cell One. Now I'm a fan of his. |

As I was reading this book I had to stop and check the publication date. Imagine how shocked I was to see that this book came out in 1998! OVER ten years ago, and the mess that is created by our government in this book is still going on. So on a very small level this book is a little prophetic. Now, this isn't a Mitch Rapp novel. I was under the impression that Mitch was in every one of Vince's books (I've only read three to date) so that was a mild, pleasant shock. However, not having Mitch in this book did not take away from the adrenaline level and excitement at all.
The premise was what got me reading: a group of assassins is fed up with how the government is being run. So they execute a plan to kill the top three idiots in government who are the problem. Not talk to, not discuss terms... but KILL! Well good for them and good for America! After they do us this huge favor they present the President and the rest of the government with demands on how to get this country back on track. And of course, our government being our government, these fools think they can STILL be seedy and stupid and try and outsmart the assassins. Dumb move. A REALLY dumb move.
If you love government conspiracy books with a heavy dose of `in your face' testosterone, then this is your next read. I don't know in what order Vince's book were published and I don't care. All I know is that when I go into my bookstore, I'm grabbing the next Flynn book I see. |
