Here is what people are saying about the The Game of Kings (Lymond Chronicles, 1)
5 Star Rating  "Nobody does it better..."2009-12-29
- Reviewed By bookworm65 from Western U.S.A.
Recently, I loaned my copy of Game of Kings to my nephew. I got so excited talking ot him about the book that I then had to borrow a copy from the library to reread it myself. I was not disappointed this time, at least my third reread. I first read Game Of Kings long ago, probably 1970. A friend introduced me to the book with these words: "I know you love historical fiction but this will be different than anything you've ever read before. You must be patient through at least the first third of the book, maybe the first half. Then I think you'll feel it was well worth your time." How right she was! It took me two weeks to read the first half and two days to read the last half. Yes, the writing, compared to most novels, is high level and therefore, difficult; the quotes and chapter headings obscure, the foreign language bits untranslated. BUT the characters and story are sublime. I've introduced many others to the series and I always give them the same warning I was given myself: be patient through the first half of the book. And prepare for a marvelous journey!
While I gobbled up every morsel of the Lymond Chronicles, I think Game Of Kings is in many ways the best of the series. The only draw back of having read these books: it's made me so picky about the quality of historical fiction that I have a hard time finding anything that lives up to the standard D. Dunnett set!

5 Star Rating  "The Best Historical Novels Ever"2009-10-10
- Reviewed By Miss Reading from Los Altos, CA USA
Dorothy Dunnett's six books about Francis Crawford of Lymond are the best historical novels I have ever read - detailed and dense, exquisitely written, but also exciting stories of political intrigue and international adventure, with intricate plotting, dozens of fascinating characters, and satisfying love stories. Each volume has a chess-related title, beginning with the first in the series, The Game of Kings, and ending with Checkmate. Lymond, the second son of a Scottish noble family, leads his band of mercenaries, friends, relations and lovers across Europe and beyond, enmeshing himself in the major political and military battles of the sixteenth century, from the rivalry of Queen Elizabeth I of England and Mary, Queen of Scots, to the battles of the Knights of Malta and the Turks, into the Ottoman Empire and the harem of the Turkish Sultan, on to Russia to serve as general to Ivan the Terrible, and ultimately back home. I've read this series twice, having fallen in literary love with Lymond from the outset, and just writing this review makes me want to open The Game of Kings and start reading again right now.

5 Star Rating  "Judgement"2009-07-19
- Reviewed By Ravenhurst
I was introduced to these books by a family member (who, you can guess, is quite the fan).

The world of Lymond and his friends, his enemies and his lovers comes to life beneath a splendorously executed (and very flowery) description of the captivating time period we know as Renaissance. You must have your brain working when reading these books. I nearly gave up halfway through "Game of Kings." But even through all the intricate politics and long, drawn out thoughts of characters, said characters continued to rivet and hold my attention.

I can almost guarantee you that you have not read about a character like Lymond before. He is a complicated person who has many reasons for the things he does; despite the fact that he is almost amazingly proficient at anything he does, there are flaws that hinder him severely and cause him great emotional pain. Reviewers who have not read past the Game of Kings and say that Lymond is a superhero are, I am sorry to say, quite wrong. He is very human, unfortunately for him, and this is proven in a particularly painful manner in the book "Pawn in Frankincense."

The language, as mentioned before, is quite high level and unless you're confident about interpreting convoluted metaphors, it's very likely that you won't enjoy the book. People in this time period rarely said what they wanted to or were alluding to outright, and they didn't speak in "plain English." Their vocabulary was extensive and decadent, and this shows in the lengthy conversations present throughout the books. If you do not want to weather such language, I do not recommend the Lymond Chronicles.

Different characters evoke different reactions from you, and if you've learned to love the books and the style in which they are written, you soon find yourself unable to put them down. I must admit that when I picked up the first book, I thought I wasn't going to read the following books. Can you tell I was horridly mistaken? :P

Then again, to each his own. Dorothy Dunnett is difficult to adjust to, but, as mentioned by many reviewers, utterly rewarding in the end. The books would not be what they are without her unique style and the dauntingly thorough research. The quotations of poems, songs, sayings and famous works of literature are appropriate and add a sparkle to the characters that you seldom find elsewhere.

And if you do get through Game of Kings and the despairingly complicated Queens' Play, you will find yourself opposite one of the most ingenious and malicious antagonists found in historical and original fiction alike. Try getting to the Disorderly Knights just for the sake of meeting this character. He is a walking contradiction. For those of you who think that nothing truly dark happens in the series...well, read Disorderly Knights and Pawn in Frankincense. It's all I've got to say.

Closing up this gargantuan review (gosh, I didn't think I'd write this much), I hope that you pluck up your courage and you try these books despite the 1* reviews.

Enjoy. :)

5 Star Rating  "Masterful, intense!"2009-06-25
- Reviewed By Darcylover from Austria, Europe
Dunnett's accurate historical research is legendary and the books are like their protagonist: highly complex, intelligent, witty, confusing and irresistable.
They are not for reading "on the by", but those who commit to Francis Crawford of Lymond, enjoy surprising plot twists and invest some concentration will be richly rewarded.

Finishing The Game of Kings I pressed the book to my chest, sighing. :) Afterwards I took a 10 months break of the intesity that is Lymond, then picked up and inhaled books 2 - 6 in two weeks.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

5 Star Rating  "So good, I read it twice"2009-06-05

Loved the entire series. Wonderful read. Great characters, setting, plot, plenty of action and a touch of mystery, great style...It's the only book I've ever read twice. Highly recommend the Nicolo series as well.

5 Star Rating  "Not much middle ground"2009-04-26

This series is challenging to read. Although Dunnett's may be some of my favorite fiction, I don't recommend it to everyone. Folks either find 'The Lymond Chronicles' addictingly readable --or a waste of their time. Reading these books requires personal tenacity, patience, wit, a sense of humor, and a modicum of intellectual rigor. Lay in a supply of these qualities before plunging in, and you'll enjoy yourself immensely.
