"Get the HP 50g Instead of the 49g+" | 2007-06-24 |

The 49g+ is very cheaply made and it misses keystrokes on a regular basis. Go right the HP50. It's much more like the solid, reliable hp calculators of old.
I love the retro look of the 49g+, but that's not why you buy a calculator of this calibur. |

I have used my 48GX since high school, and it finally died after about 11 years. I have had my 49g+ for about 6 months. I didn't want to buy used, and I didn't trust buying a "new" 48GX, so I went with the 49g+. Now that I'm out of college, I still need to have the scientific, unit conversions, and occasionally the downloadable design programs that are out there. I certainly admit that the calculator was built for more "user friendliness" which mostly means that it takes longer to use, but the calculator still is an HP. I have to admit that the USB connection is much better than the old 4-wire system. As an engineer, I have no real use for the SD card slot, but if I'm on the top of a mountain and I need to design a vertical curve, I guess it'll be handy.
Overall, I would have preferred to keep my 48GX. Like all engineers, I think it's better to keep the devil you know. I have not experienced any of the problems that others have stated. Sifting through their complaints, though, and knowing how much I abused my 48GX, I think if I used my 49g+ like I have my 48GX, I'm sure I would have broken it by now. The 49 somehow doesn't seem as sturdy.
I am still pleased with my purchase. I hope though, that HP will see some of the complaints and take them into consideration. |

| This calculator is a very useful tool for advanced mathematical courses. It has most of the functions which are necessary for Calculus and Pre-calculus. I think that whoever buys this calculator has excellent choice. The only thing is that this calculator is very complicated, making it very difficult to use. |

| Besides all opion regarding this new calculator, I would like to say, it is very nice, good design, options, features, a huge screen and modern color. So far, I haven't navigate deep inside it, it is not similar as 48GX, so you've got to expend some time to know how to use it. I bought it since there is not a better calculator than this (48GX is UNIQUE but obsolete) |

| A $150 calculator that I am going to trash. I had the same problem with the keyboard (terrible response); I struggled with it for about a year and then called HP. My warranty was out, so Hp suggested I install an update, which I did. Now the keys are firing off 3 or 4 digits with one press of the button. This is ridiculous. |

I got this calculator about a year ago. There was some locking up problems and sometimes it would not turn on. I updated all the ROMs like HP instructed. Finally, I got a replacement from HP. But it turns out it was some old refurbished one that the enter key smashed in after I used it for 10 minutes. I had to pay to send this one back and now, they sent me another old used replacement. Most of the gold paint has flaked off the front of this one and also around the side trim. It started missing keystrokes with the latest ROM, so I had to go find an old ROM from last year on the Internet. The keyboard is piss poor and makes a "thunk" noise, annoying when I am taking a test and to the people around me. Also, the right shift key started feeling loose today.
The 49g+ calculator has already been replaced with the 50g. Don't expect any sympathy from HP either for any 49g problems. Their plan seems to be to keep recycling these refurbished ones until all the warranties run out, and then they don't have to deal with the 49g+ complaints anymore. |
