I really enjoy the whole Harry Bosch character, he is seriously flawed and you probably wouldn't want to hang out with him, but if you need someone to help you out of a jam, he is your man.
I don't know how Connelly keeps coming up with these but I'm glad he does.

Someone introduced me to Michael Connelly a few months ago and I am very thankful I started at the beginning of his work with Black Echo. Connelly does a great job of using not just the primary characters but also supplementary characters from book to book. I'm just not sure I would enjoy the plots as much if I had not read the earlier books first.

In Angels Flight, Harry Bosch, a veteran LAPD homicide detective (and Connelly's main character in the majority of his books), is assigned a VERY politically sensitive case. As usual, there were lots of twists and turns which kept me from putting the book down. I was surprised at Harry at points because he was willing to "go along to get along" ...not typical Harry. And his luck with women continues...after Trunk Music I thought that was all behind him. I know Michael Connelly used to be a newspaper crime writer but none of his storylines in the past reminded me of a real story. This one brought JonBenet Ramsey to mind. I didn't really like the ending of Angels Flight...pretty hash if you ask me.

When the body of Howard Elias, a high profile black lawyer, is found inside one of the cars on Angels Flight in downtown Los Angeles, no detective in the city wants to touch the case. Elias specialises in lawsuits alleging police brutality, racism and corruption and every LAPD cop is a potential suspect in his murder. The atmosphere in Los Angeles is tense: racial distrust and recriminations against the police are part of the legacy of the Rodney King case and the O.J. Simpson trial. Every step the police take to solve this crime will be viewed with distrust as it is widely believed that the murderer was a cop.

Solving this case is a challenge for Detective Harry Bosch: feelings both amongst the police and the community are volatile. Negotiating the politics, dealing with the suspicion and hate makes trying to investigate the crime difficult - especially as quick action is required.

And, if that isn't enough, things aren't going very well for Bosch at home either.

I am reading Michael Connell's novels out of order. This may not be ideal, but it works okay for me. The novels stand alone and while I'm missing some of Harry Bosch's back story it's kind of fun filling in the gaps. This is one of the best Michael Connelly novels I've read so far. Right up there with my current favourites: `The Concrete Blonde'; `The Lincoln Lawyer' and `The Poet.'

This 1999 book is a re-read for me. I couldn't remember all the details of a 7 year old book so it's as good as a new book for me.

Connelly, as usual, writes a very good crime book. It's not fast paced, it's not scary, but it's a very good police crime book.

Connelly's forte is writing realistic characters. I know all the protagonists, Bosch, Edgar, Kiz, Irvine and Chastain from previous books where he did a good job of bringing them to life.

There is a very good depiction of how the LAPD and LA reacts to a very serious crime, very realistically written and almost worth the cost of the book itself. However, it might put off some of his audience......

The crime itself is very nicely plotted out. We are led along the leads and are right there as Bosche unravel the crime(s). Like I said, not very fast paced, but a very solid crime book. This was not a book I had to read til my eyelids dropped. I could put it down and do other stuff and get back to it, but still a very worthy addition to the Bosch collection. I don't want to give anything about the plot away so that's all I'll say about it.

Although I am a avid reader, I had never read anything by Michael Connelly until mid July. Since then I have read ten of them.( 2 Haller; 2 McEvoy; and 6 Bosch ) There are a whole lot of things that I like about Harry Bosch. First ,of course, is "everybody counts or nobody counts". Another is how he stands up to authority and for his friends.

Angels Flight is a very good book- until the end. With all the information he ( Harry ) had and all the people that also knew it, there is absolutely no way that that slime ball Irvin could have put the lid on things. And how about the cops' wife, shouldn't she have been told the truth !?Harry could have somehow leaked the truth but THIS time he did NOT stick up for his friends. Other people in the story ( the Inspector )also knew the truth. And why would anyone protect a murderer just so the department would look good.I was so ticked off last night after finishing this book that I lost sleep.

One final comment- IAD ( Internal Affairs ) are exactly as they have been portrayed in these books.

Angels Flight is another solid entry in the Harry Bosch series. It's got an interesting but very slow first half. When the second half of this story starts, look out. Connelly takes his readers on a roller coaster ride through a series of suspects that all look good for the high profile murders of a hot shot civil rights attorney and the innocent bystander who got in the way.

This was an enjoyable read once it got rolling.
