what's one more spot to a tiger? Anyway ... .
If this book wasn't in a genre that in the end saturated me, I would give it five stars.
The style is good (perhaps a weeny little macho-stereotyped), the moral problem posed is genuine and deep, as a mistery i'ts OK, and nowhere does the pace slow down.
Read it if you can. It's one of the best. Better, I think, than most Scandinavians (and US, it goes without saying) ones. |

I had a hard time putting down this book. It raised moral and ethical issues all wrapped up in a tale of mystery and suspense.
The surrounds the disappearance of a four year old who belongs to a worthless mother. What has become of her? Is she dead or alive.
The answers to these questions are answered in the final parts of the book, but the ethical and morality issues dealt with remains with the reader forever.

This book genuinely surprised me. It took a while to catch my interest at first, but it was good enough to keep me reading. The last fifty pages, though, were absolutely gut-wrenching, in the way you want a book to be gut-wrenching. The characters are faced with a huge moral dilemma, where there is no easy answer, no option that seems palpable, but a decision must be made. Action must be taken. And the rest of their lives, the characters are left to wonder if they did the right thing. And ...more This book genuinely surprised me. Is that determined by popular vote? Lawmakers? Each person individually? If there is absolute morality, where do we find it in those sticky situations that have no easy answer? I'll be thinking about this book for a while. It contains pervasive language throughout and disturbing images |

| After reading the first couple of chapters of this book, I lost interest, too wordy. Took too long to get to the missing girl. Too descriptive in many pages, gets boring. The very end of the book picked up when we learn where the child is. If it wasn't so descriptive maybe it would have been a faster read. Maybe too many characters. |

I've read all but one of Dennis Lehane's Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro PI series and I can definitely see why this one made the big screen. This book has a quirk at the first and end that may seem disjointed but was a wonderful surprise, I won`t elaborate since it should be enjoyed by a reader. This book, and I`m not a literary scholar by any means, is the best of Lehane`s Kenzie/Gennaro series in my opinion. It takes you through so many different levels of feelings from levity, fun, intrigue, sadness, disappointment, and hope concerninig the human condition that you seem to feel as if you are part of the story as a bystander. Warning, don`t start this book unless you have the time to finish it in a day, it is spellbinding. |

I'm not going to give away the ending. I'm only going to say how infuriating that ending was. It doesn't matter if it was a happy or a sad ending. That's immaterial. What is material is that the author has spent at least 5 books establishing his main character as someone that views the societal rules as optional when it comes to doing the right thing - a Raymond Chandler trope if there ever was one - and then breaks that characterization in the one place where it shouldn't be broken.
As for the rest of the book - AMAZING. It's one of the best detective novels I've read in a long time. ANd in a genre where everyone is chasing after Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammet, a book that feels this fresh and this beaten is just too great to comprehend. The characters are real. The stakes are enormous. Never do you feel like you're in the middle of a cute puzzle that some bored housewife in L.A. decided to make up for other bored housewives. There is an energy and a verve to the proceedings that keeps you moving and keeps you guessing even if you don't want to be guessing. You just want to let Lehane take over and do what he does best.
The language. The scenes. The bars are creepy. The danger is palatible. Your adrenaline races. The one problem beyond the STUPID STUPID ending is the fact that this is teh fifth book in the series so he is going to tell you the endings to the previous 4 books during the novel. But that's ok. YOu might even still want to check them out. Just to experience the dirty street, broken glass, adrenaline rush that is Dennis Lehane. |

| When I read "A Drink before the War" I thought were has this series been all my life and went out and bought them all. This one was my forth and either the series doesn't hold up or I'm just jaded. The heros have become very predictable and their gun running but lovable sidekick really doesn't do much in this one. It is an OK read, better than many, but the fizz is gone. Think I have one more stuck away and I'll read it but that's it for the series and the author. |

| This is the first Dennis Lehane book I have read. It was a really good book. It was fast paced and interesting all the way through. I have already ordered another of his books after reading this one. I have a feeling the movie is going to be very predictable for those that have not read the book. However, the book was not predictable. |
