Here is what people are saying about the Roses Are Red (Alex Cross Novels)
3 Star Rating  "A good book for the idle hours."2009-10-16
- Reviewed By User: A14H6FN5XASSHL
I will begin with a perfunctory disclaimer, which means I will explain briefly how I came across the novel. Hopefully, I can frame my review and give others a better idea as to why I maintain the opinion that I do.

I rather liked the book - it had potential. Admittedly, many of the complaints made against both author and product are valid... but it was never intended to be a serious, important work. A co-worker passed it on to me after saying that she couldn't make herself absorb such dribble, so I reluctantly adopted the responsibility myself, and that was the first factor in my enjoying it. My standards to begin with, quite simply put, were very, very low. I must acknowledge faults, first, but I will cover these briefly.

To anyone who has not read an Alex Cross novel before, it isn't immediately obvious that our hero is black, nor are we told explicitly who the members of his supporting cast are (they reveal themselves in time). Cross' history is also rather hard to follow... he was married, but his wife is dead... he has a girlfriend who was kidnapped etc etc... the house of cards which is his life is a little too shaky! The chapters are absurdly short - two pages? Barely enough for any scene to properly develop! The language is not very carefully chosen, being sometimes too plain, and sometimes too technical for the subject. Lastly, the situations can be unrealistic and badly drawn, so the reader must make quantum leaps to follow what is going on.

Despite all this, I really felt the story had spirit, and many highly interesting parts. Patterson's villain, The Mastermind, is probably the best part of the whole, being cleverly constructed and stimulating. His pathology, as it is revealed to the reader, is original and yet totally in-keeping with his character. It is a real pity that this Mastermind meets his end before the story comes to a close (there is a "change" which keeps the character of the original Mastermind from transitioning into the sequel "Violets Are Blue")... each peculiar, grotesque and frightening interlude wherein he features has five times the value of a Cross chapter (most of which border upon tedious). The Mastermind is neither invulnerable nor intangible; his wickedness is decidedly human and all the more horrible for it. I squirmed, and I was outraged... and some small, perverse part of me was thrilled and enjoyed it. An intelligent, mentally unsound and uninhibited monster, pitted against and somewhat bland, overly masculine detective - I feel certain I'm not the only one to wish the lead character into an early grave. The plot was also very appealing... serial murder, committed under the guise of bank robbery! Multiple perpetrators, each one a potential target for the others. Who will die, and who will be spared? The combination is enough to make reading nearly irresistible. I can only say I was disappointed when the themes I'd grown used to evaporated, and the "Mastermind" of "Roses Are Red" succumbed to the authorities (Boo!).

I have resolved upon finding and reading the next in the series, though I hope I am wrong in thinking that what I liked so much in this novel was a phenomenon. As a thing unto itself, I can recommend it, but only if the reader is prepared to like, and even side with, the bad guy. Personally, I prefer colorful characters to virtuous ones, and for that reason I must admit James Patterson did more for me then I ever thought possible when I first consented to read the ragged little paperback.

3 Star Rating  "Perfect Crime"2009-09-03

Alex finds himself totally involved with his work and he is having some big issues with this personal life. He has a bank robber that is getting away with murder and the money. The villain is a control freak. He has plans for one last perfect crime of his career. There are many surprises in the story. Patterson leaves some problems to be answer in some future book. This book was great but is a very easy read. Not alot of depth and the writing is easy to read. It is still a great story and will keep you hooked.

4 Star Rating  "the mastermind is another great villain"2009-08-08

James Patterson has the same faults in all of his books his dialogue especially when Cross is involved in a romance can be overwritten to the point of being lugubrious but he has the fast pacing and intense action as strengths as well as his main recurring characters butthe best Ctoss novels have the best villians and the Mastermind a planner of daring robberies which include kidnapping the branch managersfamilies is the best villian in this series. The whole novel flies by and the ending is for once believable but unpredictable. This is the best of all the Alex Cross and would get 5 stars except for Pattersons tendency to spend too much on romance which he is not good at writing

2 Star Rating  ""Forgettable Alex Cross""2009-07-22
- Reviewed By User: AS4R8E5YMJM1N
I got hooked on Alex Cross with Kiss the Girls, Along Came a Spider and the most spectacular of all, Step on a Crack. So, when I picked up Roses are Red, I expected the same page-turning suspense. To be honest, I can barely recall the plot in this forgettable book. I think that Roses Are Red is Patterson's attempt to re-create the successful, formulaic twist and turns of his previous Alex Cross books.... unfortunately, he is waaaay off the mark. Bank robbers are taking the managers families hostage as a way to crack the safes. Normally, once I start a James Patterson, a tornado could blow through my home and I wouldn't notice, however, I had to force myself to plod through this and make it through. A slow to start predictable plot that I hope I don't encounter again.

Detective Alex Cross is investigating combination bank robberies/murders orchestrated by a criminal called The Mastermind, while dealing with two personal crises at home. Excellent story with good twists and quick plotting.
