When I first started reading Biohazard, I thought I had picked up a sci-fi novel and almost forgot that I was reading non-fiction. Easy and quick reading, the story is a narrative of Alibek's work with the secret Soviet bio-weapons program. Written for the un-technical reader, Alibek provides friendly explanations of immunology and virology suitable to the layman. The most redeeming part of the book is the perspective it gives the reader to make more informed assessments of the current security climate and our nation's ability to respond to potential threats. For example, Vector, the bioresearch institute Alibek worked at, and which currently houses one of the two last remaining known strains of smallpox, was known to have conducted bioweapons research on smallpox secretly during the Cold War. This brings up the question of whether research on smallpox today is actually purely for defense reasons. The most chilling part is that these threats could still exist in unknown hands; whereas the enemy of Alibek's time was the single and relatively well characterized Soviet Union, today's enemies are non-traditional and numerous rogue states and terrorist groups that we know little about. If you're looking for just the facts, prepare to read through a good deal of personal memoir material. The main complaint I have about this book is that it tends to drag on and give too many details. The author could easily have gotten his point across in a 150 pages, but instead takes over 300 pages. The main points tend to become bogged down by personal details. It's difficult to separate credibility from sensationalism. For example, the first page describes a scene of viral particles descending upon an island of African monkeys. Do not choose this book if your criteria is literary merit. Overall, the book brings up some very interesting and little-known events. I just wish that an abridged version could come out soon. Unless you're very interested in this man's personal life, a Wikipedia article may suffice. |

| I agree with the review posted by "A Customer" that Ken Alibek is pulling everyone's leg to acquire a fat consulting job in Washington. What does a Soviet style bureaucrat do for a living in the US? Write a book to convince everyone that enormous threat exists to which only they have privy knowledge. The development of effective bioweapons requires a level of technical expertise likely beyond the reach of Soviet military science in the 80s. It is a real life iteration of the plot of LeCarre's "Russia House". As a card-carrying US microbiologist who has studied the molecular biology of pathogenic bacteria for years, I'm willing to wager all of Alibek's efforts never hit the broad side of the biowarfare barn. Why no description of the protective measures necessary to protect his researchers and the Soviet troops from these deadly agents? Why no descriptions of the deaths of workers exposed to these agents? There were numerous repetitive descriptions of Alibek producing more and more material- Why? The 1979 Sverdlovsk accident resulted in 66 deaths in a city of ONE MILLION. How effective of a biowarfare agent was that? It strains conventional wisdom to believe the same Soviet society that couldn't consistently make cars or dishwashers perfected the complex and sophisticated methods for the massive cultivation, preservation and weaponization of various fastidious microbial pathogens. I propose Alibek was a skillful Soviet bureaucrat who used his knowledge of bench-top microbiology and infectious disease to con his way to the top of a corrupt and ineffectual Soviet Military apparatus. And when the time was right he defected out of the USSR. Now he's trying to con us. I'm not buying his story. And you shouldn't either. |

What would you do if you if you suddenly found out that the Russians were planning on releasing several tons of smallpox in the United States? That's right - tons! That's exactly what Dr. Ken Alibek and Stephen Handleman wrote about in their scary book, Biohazard: The Chilling True Story of the Largest Covert Biological Weapons Program in the World--Told from Inside by the Man Who Ran It.
Dr. Alibek was a high-ranking Russian military officer who actually ran the Russian bioweapons program from 1988 to 1992 - the year he defected to the United States. Under his command, the Russians built the largest bioweapons research and production facility in history. Named Biopreparat, it included about seventy facilities located throughout the Soviet Union. That's where the good doctor rose up through the ranks as he became an expert on biowarfare. He conducted extensive research into weaponizing plague, tularemia, anthrax and small pox, and developed the technology needed to produce large quantities of those pathogens. As if that isn't scary enough, you simply won't believe what the U.S. government geniuses did when Dr. Alibek brought all of this to their attention. Like I said, this book is scary, and it definitely should not be read by anyone with a germ phobia. For the rest of you - go for it.

"Amazing, Scary and Well Written!" | 2008-06-13 |

| This book is a fantastic read. It really lets you in on what was going on in the Soviet Union in regards to their biological warfare programs. (It also informs you of the relationships between the Soviet Union and other countries such as India, Iraq, Cuba, etc. and the information/equipment that may have been passed on.) Ken Alibek has led an amazing life and this story could not have been told any better. It is told in an easy to understand format, but includes a lot of great information about the viruses and the implementation of them in weapons. He really explains about the structure of the program in an easy to understand way. The index in the back is great. If you are a fan of Richard Preston's books, you will enjoy this one. In fact, Mr. Alibek is referenced in the Demon in the Freezer. The realizations are scary, but everyone should be informed of the possibilities. |
