"Dyson DC07" | 2009-09-20 |

I've owned the Dyson DC07 since about 2002/3. Mine is actually the turquoise/purple model that came from a warehouse store with animal/turbo tool and floor brush in addition to small rectangular brush, soft brush, and crevice tool, but I was told by Dyson that they are the same. Different colored models with differing accessories were sold by different merchants. I was saddened to read the one-star review from the person whose asthma was aggravated by emptying the bin. Common sense will tell you that a cloud of dust will be created if you just dump the bin from any height. I have asthmatic children and, for their sake, would never release a puff of vacuum debris into the air. I insert the end of the bin into a plastic grocery bag and wrap the the top of the bag tight around the bin. I pull the trigger releasing the hatch. Out comes the debris into the bag with no puff of dirt. GENTLY, so as not to create a dust storm, I remove the bin from the bag, slowly close the hatch and GENTLY twist the plastic bag shut, trapping the debris inside. This bag I then throw into the trash. I also try to empty the bin outside, because I'm sure that, while none is visible, some dust does escape.
I am thrilled with this vacuum. It's incredible how powerful it is and how much dirt it can remove from rugs and carpeting. You have to try it for yourself. I experimented, as did many, with using the Dyson following my previous vacuum. It is at once sickening and gratifying to see what appears in the clear Dyson bin. Another nice feature is that when something is vacuumed by mistake and you hear it go up the hose and think to yourself, "Oh no! What was that?!", you can clearly see what it was and retrieve it if necessary. Twice, I thought it was losing suction, but I removed and rinsed the filter as recommended and cleaned out the holes inside the bin with an old toothbrush and the suction was as strong as ever. The instruction manual did recommend that fine powders not be vacuumed with the Dyson. I add this comment because another review somewhere said that the manual said nothing about fine powdery substances.
I think it is a bit loud. A relative thought it was heavy. Initially, the use of the hose with the tools was awkward, but eventually I got used to it. I like that the electrical cord is so long and that I can vacuum up to my landing with the 17' hose. To me, however, the sound, weight (it rolls well and I don't think it's all that heavy), and "breaking in of myself" to this machine is worth it every time I see what it sucks out of my floor, carpet, furniture, and car. There is no way I was even changing my vacuum bags this frequently as my previous vacuum couldn't fill its bag in one or two uses.
I chose this model so that I wouldn't have to buy HEPA filters or bags. Six to seven years later, after spending NOTHING to replace broken parts or for repairs, I'm a very happy Dyson customer. And no, I don't work for Dyson. Actually, I was impressed with Dyson's customer service in the first few months I owned the vacuum. I was interested in the accessory floor tool with the wheels that seems to retail on Amazon for $49.99. After explaining why I was interested in this accessory, the Dyson person told me that the floor tool I had would probably suit my needs sufficiently. Still curious, some time later, I bought it somewhere with a coupon and you know what? The Dyson customer service person had given me an honest opinion and in hindsight, I would agree with what he told me. To date, my experience with the DC07 and the customer service has only been positive. |

"Long-term review: Good and powerful vaccum but has flaws" | 2009-09-19 |

We have had the dc07 for about five years now, or maybe longer. It replaced a hoover canister that cleaned great (or so I thought) but was constantly breaking (the plastic parts that held the handle together). I am the primary cleaner of our house and I love the Dyson, but it definitely has some shortcomings. We have pets and kids and a husband who works outside--so a lot of dirt. I vacuum 3 or 4 times a week.
PROS: The dyson has probably paid for itself simply by not requiring vacuum bags. I used to use a bag a week or more and the tyvekish bags that keep the dust down are really expensive. The suction on the Dyson is great. Unlike others, I do not have a problem with the hose attachment or getting under cabinets etc. I love the way the hose just pops out. I keep the floor brush always on the hose. This is 1. less noisy than not having an attachment there, and 2. keeps it ready to pop out and do floors and under cabinets. We have a wooden kitchen floor, so I use the vacuum on it rather than sweeping so that all the dirt is pulled out of the nooks and crannies. We have area rugs and floors, and carpeted stairs. You CAN lift the vacuum by the canister handle. It's heavy, but since you don't need to bend over to lift it, it is fine with me. The cord is great too. At first I was disappointed it was not retractable like my canister, but I love the way you flip the peg down and the whole thing comes off at once. It never tangles for me, has good body. Also, the upholstery tool (one of the few standard tools) works very well on the stairs for me. I don't bother trying to do stairs with the main vacuum. Stairs are very clean and the hose reaches right up to the top.
CONS: The dyson is REALLY noisy--I can't imagine why people think it is quiet. When I vacuum my husband leaves the house. Sometimes I wear ear plugs. The other big con is the bit about the filter never needing replacing is baloney. You really need to buy a spare filter, so after you wash it, you can use it while that one dries. I am actually on my third filter. While it's true you can clean the blue foam part in the sink, the white papery filter stuff never gets truly clean, and if you vacuum ashes or plaster you may just have to toss it out. The dust comes in around the edge of the foam and eventually permanently clogs the white part. Once I thought my vacuum was broken because it had completely lost suction, then I replaced the filter and is was like brand new. Another con is many accessories--which are critical--are extras. This jacks up the cost. I recommend the dusting wand, very helpful and gently. The shape is a lot better than the normal on for a lot of tasks. Also the floor tool is essential if you are doing floors. I have the plain one that doesn't have wheels. It seems good. Another major con is the hose is not durable. I use the hose every time I vacuum, but I have had to replace it twice. The rubber or plastics that coats the coils (i.e. the flexible part) just rips after a couple years and it's not cheap to replace. On the other hand, everything about this vacuum is modular, so when you get the new hose in the mail, you just pop it in, no trouble at all. Also, I did have the upholstery tool and some other part break early on. But one call to dyson and they replaced it for free. They haven't broken since, so I wonder if there was a period of defective parts.
All in all, as some others have said, there isn't really a better vacuum available. In general, most people would spend a lot of money to have something that made house cleaning easier and more effective, so why the vacuum cleaner companies haven't come up with better tools is a puzzle. I would definitely say to take any of Dyson's claims with a grain of salt, but that doesn't mean it's not a really good vacuum.

"Had it for two years - nothing bad to say about it" | 2009-06-03 |

This is a great vac. I've had it for two years and the single problem we had with an attachment falling off was immediately rectified by customer service (who overnighted us a replacement part for free). The suction is amazing and we are always a little wierded out by how much dirt - dirt we didn't realize was there - it picks up. The only negative - and it really isn't a negative at all - is that the hose attachment can be a bit cumbersome to operate, however, once you learn how to use it, it works fine.
Overall, we have had it for two years and have been very happy with it. I can't really reconsile the negative reviews. Maybe people don't like spending so much for a vacuum. I have no idea. We used to replace our cheepo vacuums every year or so. This will certainly last a long time and works better than any other canister or upright vac we have ever had in the past. |

I never liked the idea of a $300 vacuum and I still don't. We have a $90 Bissel upright that is lighter, reaches under furniture further and cleans even better. It also has the same cyclone canister dirt catcher feature.
The Dyson is USELESS on stairs. It will not suck out of the bottom while in the upright position, so you are left with the end flopping around as you try to vacuum the steps. It also has no easy points to grip it by when doing this.
The detachable wand portion is lousy too. The whole handle is built into the piece that you need to reach into crevices with.
This thing is HEAVY. Be prepared for an arm workout if you have a large house. If you have any kind of arm or shoulder problems this vacuum is going to make you sore.
I'm not really sure how this is even possible but cord is always getting tangled and twisted up, which did not happen with our bissel. |
