| This book is simply brilliant. For those who are intellectually honest and critical but who are also tired of the materialistic philosophy of atheism, this book is a refreshing breeze in to the alternate (and very probable) outlook on reality, where the ground of reality is not matter, but Consciousness. A fascinating hypothesis linking Quantum Physics, Psychology and Spirituality. Highly recommended! |

"Goswami's fascinating fusion of science and spirituality" | 2009-06-06 |

For those of you who enjoy thinking deep thoughts about life, the universe and everything, has Amit Goswami got a book for you! "The Self Aware Universe" will blow your mind without the need to resort to illegal substances.
The first part of the book delves deeply into the strange world of quantum physics. Goswami has the perfect academic credentials to write authoritatively on this daunting subject. It is very scientific, and well researched. Sometimes it is a bit difficult to follow, but don't let it bother you if you still feel a bit perplexed. Your not alone. As the Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynman said, "No one understands quantum physics." Despite the difficulties, Goswami does an excellent job explaining this paradoxical subject, even without all the bothersome mathematics.
The second half of the book is much more philosophical. The science is much less rigorous here. Amit Goswami provides great insights into Eastern and particularly east Indian religious and philosophical tradition. He doesn't restrict himself to that though, there is healthy dose of western psychology here too. His writing makes compelling connections to the physical science he so deftly explained earlier. This makes this book a fascinating fusion of science and spirituality.
This book is not for a casual reader, but it's not strictly for academics either. I'd recommend it to a thoughtful, intelligent reader. If you are really interested in the nature of consciousness, and its possible relationship to quantum physics, then "The Self Aware Universe" should be at the top of your must read list. Highly recommended.

"More than philosophy" | 2009-04-19 |

I have been searching for an answer to my many existential questions over the years, and here it is! After reading several other books about quantum physics (for the lay-person, although I do have a B.S.), I came to many of the same conclusions as Goswami, but he has put it together into a system that works. The only parts that I feel he could have gotten wrong involve the multiverse theories as well as the hypothesized 10 or 11 dimensions of the universe. He discounted the multiverse, but failed to address the other point. I disagree that we will not be able to create artificial intelligence someday. I fail to see why a quantum consciousness could not also take root within silicone if it was just as complex as a human mind. I would be interested to hear Goswami's thoughts on Ray Kurzweil's singularity.
If you have trouble believing in God or any supreme being, you should read this book. Goswami shows that God is very much possible and can be found within as well as without. This is consistent not only with the God I was brought up with as a Christian, but also jives well with other religions.
One can easily tell that Goswami comes from an Indian/Hindu/Buddhist background, but he is also very familiar with Christian philosophy. You do not have to convert to believe in Monistic Idealism, it should fit quite well into any belief system and facilitate self-growth and understanding of the universe.
As for the scientific background of the first two or three sections, it takes some time to wrap one's mind around quantum physics, to the point where it may turn away readers not used to scientific writing. Goswami's facts in this department are correct from what I have read previously. But in my opinion, the key portions of this book lie in the applications and interpretations in the last sections.
I am very enthusiastic about this philosophy and I feel that it could change the world. The difficult part is explaining the evidence to lay-people. I think Goswami has done an excellent job here as well. |

I remember first being exposed to many of the ideas in this book when a friend sent me a copy of "What the bleep do we know!?" Dr. Goswami actually appears on the film and covers many of the core ideas that are presented in the book.
The book goes considerably farther down the rabbit hole. Goswami does a decent job at explaning quantum physics to people who don't understand quantum physics. There were still a few areas that I had difficulty understanding.
Goswami then does his best to tie philosophy, mysticism and religion to quantum physics, suggesting that the brain operates on the quantum level. Is it true? I can't say that it is true or false, it is merely the belief of Dr. Goswami.
This is another book that I would recommend to anyone who is trying to solve the puzzle of life and death. |
