This book is a great tool for parenting our children. Helping us to see the heart issues and not just the behaviour issues and dealing with them. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to teach their children and guide their hearts as they learn to grow and mature into healthy adults.

What a great book to give as a baby shower gift.
Every loving parent should give this book their time. Young as well as mature parents will be enlightened by the biblical principles shared in this "easy to read", book. It gives good understanding to the call of "parenthood". I'm hoping to have a bible study group with the young mom's of our church using this book with the bible as a guide.

"Shepherding A Child's Heart" by Tedd Tripp has changed my view on discipline and parenting. Our purpose as parents is "to train up our children in the way they should go". We are to prepare them for the world. So many parents miss this because the every day "stuff" is already too much. Our #1 priority should be to train our children. Their future depends on it. Tedd Tripp explains how we should train their hearts to love the Lord and to want to please HIM, not to want to please "man" or "self". This is so true and reading this book has helped to put it all into perspective. Thank you Tedd, we will recommend this book to every parent we know.

I did not receive what I ordered. The book pictured is a revised edition (which is what I wanted) I received a 2005 version with a different cover. This is false advertisement and it should be specified on the order that they are giving you an out of print and older version.

No way does this book promote child abuse! Rather, it promotes true, real, godly love for your child. If you love your child then you will discipline them. And if you don't physically discipline your child, then the Bible says you actually hate them! Proverbs 13.24: "Whoever spares the rod HATES his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him." That is God's logic. If you don't see it, then maybe you are following the world's logic. Again, Proverbs says: "Do not withold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol." (Proverbs 23.13-14) Discipline is not abuse (unless you are calling God a liar), but a love that is so strong and brave, that you will not withold what God has ordained to prevent a child to growing up thinking sin is no big deal, and that God is winking at it. It pains God to discipline his children, but he does it BECAUSE he loves them and only wants the best for them: "For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." (Hebrews 12.6)

I am SO grateful for the loving discipline I received as a boy. I was happy and relieved to have a short, sharp spanking when I had been disobedient, and then the hugs and kisses would follow. My Dad is a spiritual legend, and a hero to me. He loves God, and loved me so much that he did not leave me to become an undisciplined and spoiled little brat. The happiest kids are always the ones who have been spanked out of a deep love and concern for their future. "It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illigitimate children and not sons. Besides this we have earthly fathers who disciplined us and we RESPECTED them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a SHORT time as it SEEMED BEST to them, but he disciplines us FOR OUR GOOD THAT we may share his holiness." (Hebrews 12.7-10)

Discipline differs from punishment. Punishment is the real consequence of sin. We are all sinners, and if we sin then we deserve punishment. And if we are undisciplined in this life, and go our own way, and snub Christ dying on the cross for sins, then in hell we will receive our just punishment. But if we know that our punishment has already been paid for by Jesus, then a little discipline will shape us into a more Christ-like people along the way to us meeting our Saviour. Thankfully, God, and godly parents will both discipline their children.
