Here is what people are saying about the A Short History of Nearly Everything
4 Star Rating  "Snuggle up to Uncle Bill while he takes you on a fascinating journey"2009-09-30

Absolutely fascinating, hard to understand information digested and delivered in the most dry, sardonic and hilarious way. Its like have a cup of tea and a big chat about inherrantly interesting stuff with your twinkle in the eye, nerdy great uncle. I had never read Bill Bryson before and now I worship the man. I'm keen to read it again.

5 Star Rating  "A BOOK ABOUT SCIENCE WRITTEN FOR THE NON-SCIENTIST"2009-09-29
- Reviewed By User: A2I1O94YTA2FMV
Never, ever would it occur to me to walk into a bookstore and say, "Gee, I think I'll buy a book about physics, protons, and the origin of the universe." But because Bill Bryson wrote this, I bought it as soon as it was released. Not only does he explain incredibly complex and obscure subjects so that an ordinary non-scientist reader can grasp them, he does so with humor. Moreover, he interjects the human element into these subjects - the jealousy and rivalry between scientists and how those petty battles affected research and eventual outcomes.

I can't say I totally understood everything - some of it was just too abstract. But one thing I do recall that made an impression: you know that fuzzy screen on your TV when you come to a "dead air" channel, with the ensuing noise? Some of that is coming from the furthest reaches of the universe. I loved that.

I really enjoyed this book. I found myself sharing funny stories about scientists with my friends.
FYI-the pages at the top of the book in the back were stuck together. I had to tear them apart to turn the pages. It kindof slows things down a little.

And loved every bit of it.
This is Bill Bryson at the top of his form, journalistic in style but always down to earth and comprehensible, Bryson takes us on a tour of the grand concepts, seemingly unafraid of the task he set for himself. And what a story, from the Big Bang to the end of the universe (possibly) he name-checks the people who made the discoveries and sets them in their context. He reviews the grand theories and tells some of the small personal stories behind them. At well over 400 pages it's not a book to rush through, but take the time and you'll be repaid with a notion of the wonder of it all.

I buy this in bulk and give for presents. It is easy reading and truly fun and educational. Good for young adults too. It is also a tremendous resource for people who have disorders because it shows that almost all the great discoveries were by troubled people or by accident.

5 Star Rating  "Fun and Interesting Read...If that's what you're into..."2009-07-30
- Reviewed By User: A1NTMHXB1NJKV7
I'm starting to see why more and more reviews begin with "This is what this book/product ISN'T."

If you're an avid fan of romance novels or scientific journals, you're not going to like this book.

This book ISN'T a science textbook. So, if you're a scientist or a genius in various fields of study like quantum physics, I'm not sure you're going to take a whole lot away from the experience of reading this book.

BUT, if you're someone who has an interest in a timeline of sorts from the inception of life all the way to 10 minutes ago - this is an entertaining, engaging, pleasurable read that provides a lot of information about a lot of things that a lot of people don't know a whole heck of a lot about.

With each scientific discovery, you'll learn a bit about the people who figured something out. At times, it may seem a bit tedious, but usually, the information about the discoverers isn't wasted information.

The book is a chronology of life and human exploration. There's plenty here to inspire you to break out your Google and do a bit more research on something you never knew.

And there's wit amongst the wisdom. Bryson is not the consumate humorist, but he's interesting and witty at times and he comes across very much as sort of a regular guy who has had the experiences of a lifetime and manages to find a great deal of humor in many of them. He's not egotistical, I'm just jealous of what he's gotten to do.

I'm pleased that this man, who clearly bit off more than he could chew when he decided to walk the Appalachian Trail, has managed to bite off something he could actually complete here. It's a pleasant read - a bit long, but worth it.
