If you are going to be writing reports, resumes, papers, technical documents, or the like, this will be a very handy book. I'm someone who often gets stuck trying to remember a grammatical rule or find that I'm not 100% sure on my word choice and usage. This book certainly helps with those problems I encounter while writing.

As such a large reference, it can be a bit difficult to sift through topics and find exactly what you are looking for, despite the expansive index. Finding topics quickly can take some practice and becomes easier as you become more familiar with the book. For those in a rush or too impatient to flip through the manual to find specific topics, I'd recommend subscribing to the Chicago Manual of Style Online ($30/year as of 2009), where you can search for keywords on any computer connected to the internet and not have to lug around this large book or the CD-ROM version.

Very comprehensive. Although I've yet to use it for an editing job, I've scanned through several sections and found it interesting reading, and echoes a lot of what I was taught as a Technical and Professional Writing major. I consider CMS an essential and professional resource guide.
