Here is what people are saying about the What the Buddha Taught
5 Star Rating  "I was somewhat confused about Buddhism until reading this book"2009-09-16
- Reviewed By User: A18F0V6AM67DEI
My view is certainly that of a beginner who has studied Buddhism for only two years....

Many Buddhism books that I read over the last two years are about many sutras (suttas) and teachings that were compiled or created by Buddhist monks about 500 to 1000 years after the death of the original Buddha (Siddhattha Gotama). Many of these "late" Sutras and teachings involve other "buddhas" and deities that are not historical (i.e., there is no evidence that they actually existed in human history). Although I don't reject those deities (certainly not of their "teachings"), I am more interested in learning and understanding what the original and historical Buddha actually taught.

As I understand, most scholars believe that documents like Dhammapada and the Pali Canon were compiled shortly after the death of Buddha and therefore these documents are very close to what the Buddha actually taught. I read through both Dhammapada and the Pali Cannon (the many Nikayas); but I was unable to put them together in a way so that I can understand the inter-relationship of many discourses. "What the Buddha Taught" by Walpola Rahula finally helps me to get the big picture of the original Buddha's teaching.

All the basic yet fundamental teachings of Buddha are in this book: each of the Four Noble Truths is explained faithfully according to what the buddha actually said. The book has a dedicated chapter explaining the doctrine of no soul with exhaustive original quotes from Buddha. In the end of the book, there are almost 50 pages of original "Selected Text" to reinforce the many concepts that the author described earlier in the book. The author did a great job to interpret what the Buddha actually taught by presenting the original text from which his interpretations are based on.

4 Star Rating  "Good, but incomplete"2009-04-10

For decades, Walpola Rahula's book has been part of what we might call a Western Buddhist Canon, along with Shunryu Suzuki's "Zen Mind Beginner's Mind", Goddard's "Buddhist Bible", and a handful of others. While Rahula is from the Theravada tradition, the book has been highly praised by Mahayana scholars and monks since its publication, as a truly universal book that talks about the teachings common to each Buddhist tradition.

Is it well-written? Absolutely. It won't duplicate the feeling some of us got when first we read the Dhammapada or the Heart Sutra; on the other hand, it could give an accurate picture of Buddhist philosophy to the kind of person who is looking for information rather than inspiration. A book on Buddhism that a Muslim or Christian can read and understand conceptually that doesn't seem like a call to conversion is very necessary from where I stand.

One problem is, though, that we don't actually know what the historical Buddha said. We have some ideas; the Pali canon is probably somewhat closer to the truth than the Mahayana sutras (and I say this as someone who practices a Mahayana method). And we have certain core teachings held in common by all "Orthodox" Buddhist schools of thought. But realistically, at the end of the day, we're no more certain about what the Buddha actually said than what Jesus actually said, or whether Laozi actually existed. Rahula downplays this, to what I think it the book's detriment. It makes it sound as if the corpus of Buddhist literature is a lot more solid, unbiased, and unambiguous than it really is.

There are also many assertions that are not explained and could very easily be misunderstood. For example, Rahula states when explaining what a Buddha is that a man, and only a man, may become a Buddha. Now, it's my understanding that in pre-Mahayana Buddhism, there is a distinction between Buddhas and Arahants, and then a further division between Buddhas who could share their enlightenment to establish a dharma and those who couldn't. A common enough explanation was that women in pre-industrial society could not have wielded the social respect to spread a dharma and thus can't be Buddhas in the technical sense, but can still achieve enlightenment. To a casual reader though, it looks an awful lot like someone just writing women off and saying they don't have the spiritual chops to reach Buddhahood. A little explanation could go a long way here.

Despite such reservations, this is a very good beginner's guide to Buddhism for someone who wants enough scholarship to get the facts but not a confusing or inaccessible academic tome.

5 Star Rating  "Foremost book on Buddhism for scholastic rigor and simplicity"2008-05-05
- Reviewed By User: A2RU4U1JZ3DMP5
This is the foremost book on Buddhism recommended for it's simplicity, authenticity, completeness, and scholastic rigor. If you want to know what Buddhism is really about, rather than what some popular crackpot or charlatan is trying to re-brand as Buddhism these days, this is the book to read. It is written with non-Buddhists curious about Buddhism in mind, and is suitable for use in college-level courses. Even if you're a Buddhist, this is worth reading just to see if you have any misconceptions about Buddhism.

This book is simple and down to earth in its presentation of Buddhism. So much so, in fact, that I am almost embarrassed by my books on Tibetan, Zen, Theravadan and all the other sectarian accounts of the Buddha's teachings. Reading Rahula, I have to ask: when did Buddhism get so complicated? And why? From his presentation, the additions to the teachings by later traditions seem superfluous indeed.
