Here is what people are saying about the Dhammapada: The Path of Perfection
4 Star Rating  "This is not the Mascaro translation"2009-08-04
- Reviewed By Roger Townsend from Houston, TX USA
Despite what it says, when you receive your Kindle book, you will find that this is a translation by F. Max Muller. I just returned mine for a refund. So far, however, Amazon has not changed the description. So if you really want the Mascaro translation, you'll have to buy a hard copy verion of the book. The Muller translation is not bad, but it lacks the poetry of the Mascaro. If you don't care about which one you're getting, then this is a fine version.

I personally own ten English versions of the Dhammapada. Juan Mascaro's translation is the most beautiful and poetic I have read. The last chapter in particular (ch. 26 "The Brahmin") is a poetic masterpiece, highly evocative of the sacred. I disagree with other reviewers who believe Mascaro's translation is not accurate. Although I do not read Pali, I have studied the transliterated Pali and believe that Mascaro's translation is accurate enough. He takes minor poetic liberties, staying close to the original meaning of the text. (For scholarly study you may wish to supplement this version with a more literal translation such as that of Irving Babbitt.) This is an elegant translation of one of the world's greatest scriptures.

3 Star Rating  "Slightly useless introduction"2009-04-08
- Reviewed By Bernadette Starling from Sydney, Australia
The Dhammapada is a collection of pithy Buddhist sayings.
As someone with absolutely no familiarity with Pali (the language that the Dhammapada was originally written) I cannot question Juan Mascaró's translation. I found his explanation of how the Sanskrit word Dharma (which according to Juan Mascaró means moral law) becomes Dhamma in Pali very interesting, whilst the word Pada means foot or path (and sounds very similar to the Latin word `Ped' meaning foot). The word Dhammapada therefore means path to moral law. Though his introduction is an example of exquisitely writing, Juan Mascaró, very new age argument that all religions are one, has little to do with the Dhammapada itself which is mostly moral injunctions. In Chapter 22 I learnt that Buddhism (or at least the original author of the Dhammapada) forbids widow remarriage. This is not surprising in light of the traditionally low status of women (especially widows) in Buddhist societies. Most of this text refers to men exclusively, women seem invisible to the anonymous author of the Dhammapada. Many of these little aphorisms reveal that Buddhism is no picnic.
The Dhammapada is short and I read it in less than a day, I heartily recommend it to anyone who wants a quick introduction to Buddhism.

I gave it only Three stars for the irrelevance of the introduction, it would have been better if Juan Mascaró, had actually attempted to give historical background and explanation to these Buddhist precepts rather than preach new age philosophy.
I should also like to note that the edition sent to me by amazon.com has a different cover design from the one featured on this page (instead of some sort of yellow design it shows two giant Buddha's footprints) and is a black penguin classic rather than the old style. However because they have the same ISBN I am assuming that the content is the same.

A book of thought provoking, strategically laid out poems that illustrate what I imagine are core tennets of Buddhist belief.Raised Christian with English my birth language,so its a stretch for me to take understanding from this translation. Here is what I do know.
This is a Penguin publication .
The author is a long deceased Oxford academic from the past century.
Another spiritual book I read is the Oxford Bible,a very loosely stitched together book of sayings;legal advice, stories, diaries and songs are also thrown in.
The Oxford is a thoroughly researched modern work that is powerfully meaningful to me. Every so often I give it a read.
Great grandads' British Army Bible circa 1860 is the same book, but I confess fails to carry any spiritual water. I sense in this Dhammapada a mis-translated , outdated work that many western people may find a passing raincloud of cleverness rather than experience a cloudburst of joy. This is your joy on the line, get some!

5 Star Rating  "My Foundation"2008-10-26
- Reviewed By Geoff Howard from Halifax, NS CANADA
This has been the single most important book in my life for many years now. Some reviews dislike the translation, well I have never read another version of this book, but this version has brought me peace and clarity many times with the wisdom found within it.

I recommend the Dhammapada to anyone who wants to travel the road of peace and self discovery. Read one chapter a day, every day, and you will find new meaning each day even if the chapter has been read many times.

As stated in the title, the book is my foundation.

5 Star Rating  "A Must Read"2007-08-04
- Reviewed By guest from Dallas, TX
I've read about 100 buddhism books, and so far, I think this one (this translation of the Dhammapada) and the Dalai Lama's "A Flash of Lightning in the Dark of Night - A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life" are the best buddhism teachings I've read to date.

I read the earlier reviews by some stating this translation is not accurate. Maybe other translations are more literally word for word correct with the original; however, I feel that this translation conveys the teaching the best.

Read the various translations that Riku Simonen presented in his post, and the one that Thomas gave in the comment to Simonen's post. Forget about the accuracy of the translation, which one makes the most sense?

Supposively Buddha stated that a person should not follow any teaching based on blind faith, that all teachings should be questioned, and only the ones that are true to a person's heart should be followed.
