This is a must-read, I think, for every Christian. All of us are called to counsel, and do so in our natural interactions with everyone around us. Tripp challenges us to make sure our counsel is Biblical and informed, thought and prayed through. I found it amazingly helpful for myself, and would recommend it simply for the personal benefit every Christian could gain from it, with instruction from scripture on the change process that AT LEAST could be used on our own hearts. At best, we will have opportunities to share the truths with other believers.

The text starts out with the truth that all of us counsel, whether we realize we are, or not, and continues with biblical requirement for all of us to counsel from the truth of scripture, in love, pointing our counselees toward Christ, while targeting the heart as we help others address issues. The process of counseling is presented, including building relationships, helping someone see the real issue, instruction/discipleship that encourages/drives those we counsel to build a Biblical view of suffering, trials or the consequences of sin, and points them to dependency on Christ.

The author addresses dealing with our own hearts and sin before and while we counsel others, and the biblical mandate for speaking the truth in a loving manner. Throughout the text, the author models using the whole counsel of God, not just throwing out single verses that we think address a specific issue, but instead using all of Scripture to instruct, sanctify, and bring light to the real heart issues.

A clear picture of what Biblical counseling looks like is provided through vignettes, examples and descriptions of the process. In the final part of the text, specific homework assignment examples are given with the biblical justification for the use of them, and potential uses in counseling.


NOW, for the reason I didn't give it FIVE stars: It does not address how to counsel people who are not Christians, which, if we are doing mission work, or work and live in a secular environment, we need Biblical wisdom for those situations too! Perhaps Tripp will write a "Part Two". . .if so, I would heartily read!!

The book is excellent and I would suggest reading it if you have teenagers or intend on entering a biblical counseling group.

This book MUST become a part of your library if you are looking for a clear definition of how all Christians are called to help others deal with difficulties in life. Tripp has written a masterpiece in this work. The reader is gently led through a building discussion about how every Christian is personally in need of change, but who is also called to help others in need of change. Students in my graduate classes that are assigned this book to read almost unanimously agree that the work is "life-changing". It is great for both the professional and lay person. It is easy to read and is filled with personal reflections that add a warm tone to the book. Excellent in every regard!

This is a must read for anyone who wishes to learn more about Kingdom Building in a Covenantal sense...
