 | Peeled Snacks Fruit & Nuts, FigSated, 2.6-Ounce Bags (Pack of 12) |
 | "OK to try but I cancelled my subscription; also nuts are salted" | 2008-10-21 |
I prefer a chewy dried fruit or crunchy dried fruit and these are too juicy and plump. May be just what YOU like, but not for me. I opened all the packages and am trying to get the fruit part drier. Fruit bits are whole fruit so I cut them up into smaller pieces. Also, the nuts are salted. Read the ingredients...salt is included in listing. I prefer Bare Fruits mangos.

 | Eclipse System 12 (PFES12) |
 | "wish they came without the biowheel tray!" | 2008-08-04 |
I use these tanks quite a bit...both in the 6 and 12 gallon size. However, since I typically use them as species/breeder tanks, I do not want to use the Biowheel which can suck babies into the filtration chamber. So, I end up removing the BioWheel tray and substituting a sponge filter instead. Remember that the acrylic scratches easily, so algae growth and it's removal requires specialized equipment or critters. I watch for sales on fosterandsmith.com.

 | Brighty : Of the Grand Canyon (Marguerite Henry Horseshoe Library) |
 | "great classic - not the size expected" | 2007-11-30 |
I loved the Henry books as a grade schooler and wished that my mother hadn't given away all my books while I was in college. I'm now trying to rebuild that part of my library and assumed that the hardcover version ordered would be the size of the original 'classic' printing. Instead, this is a mini-book in comparison. Just be aware of that when ordering. For those looking for other animal book series that a nature-loving child might enjoy, consider Jim Kjelgaard's books (Big Red, Irish Red etc), and Gerald Durrell (My Family and other Animals etc).

 | Waterlilies and Lotuses: Species, Cultivars, and New Hybrids |
 | "not all inclusive" | 2007-08-01 |
I was disappointed with this book as it did not include most of the hardy waterliles I've recently purchased (eg. Chromatella, Helvola). Perhaps I need to purchase the first Slocum book for this information?? They may be included under a different name, but if so, this does make this reference less useful as the common trade names are the key words most of us will be using to find information.

 | Applique Masterpiece: Affairs of the Heart |
 | "no needle-turn applique technique information" | 2007-07-31 |
I was hoping for some helpful hints about needle-turn applique but there is absolutely nothing here about the applique process. Only instructions are about quilt construction. I was also surprised by how poorly the author does needle-turn applique. The photos clearly show poorly done, jagged curves and obvious large stitches. I can do better than this and I'm a mere novice. Interesting colors and patterns, but that's the easy part! I was disappointed in this book.

 | Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The Complete Seasons 1-4 |
 | "watch prices....." | 2004-05-19 |
I guess I lucked out by ordering this set immediately upon finding all 4 seasons listed for ~$119...now the set price exceeds $180. I'd never watched Buffy when it was on the air as I'm not much of a vampire/horror movie person. I'm more of a Sci-Fi buff (Andromeda, Firefly, Star Trek:Deep Space Nine). But I had been greatly impressed with Firefly (Joss Whedon's work as well), and had a number of co-workers who were Buffy fans....so I gave it a shot. The first season was pretty flat but built the backstory for season 2-3 which I've really enjoyed! I'm about ready to start season 4....then the big question becomes....am I enough of a Buffy fan to go for Season 5 & 6A If you enjoyed Roswell....this series has much of the same flavor with a bit more 'camp' and zippy dialogue. However, it doesn't come close to reaching the levels of Firefly.

 | River's Edge |
 | "two poorly acted roles - the rest sold the movie!" | 2004-05-04 |
Although I found the acting of Crispin Glover (Layne) and Joshua Miller (Tim )to be too over-the-top to be 'real', the rest of the cast SOLD their roles and made this a surprisingly well-done flick. Disturbing....

 | African Odyssey |
 | "marvelous compilation of acoustic African music" | 2002-02-05 |
Tired of the Afro-pop and dance-beat music with an African flavor? Love acoustic guitar music with an ethnic flavor? You'll love this CD! I immediately went out and ordered all of Seydu and Habib Koite's music after listening to this compilation. I just wish I could find Manecas Costa's works!

 | Hakuba FP-L1 Flat Pod Photographic/Video Tripod |
 | "doesn't work with digital camera" | 2001-04-02 |
This tripod was listed as an accessory for the Kodak DC3200 digital camera but there is no linkage available on that camera to interface with the tripod (ie. no little hole to screw that attachment screw into). OK, I'm certainly not a photographer myself so I took the whole she-bang into work for the real photographers to explain to me. Shaking their heads, they told me "hey, this tripod won't work with this camera". So, I guess I'm not as dumb as I look (weak grin). Anyway, make sure the camera you have has what it takes to hook up with a tripod cuz the recommendations page doesn't necessarily take this into consideration. I can use the tripod with a couple rubber bands around the camera but this certainly wan't my intention.

 | Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises : of the Eastern North Pacific and Adjacent Arctic Waters, A Guide to Their Identification |
 | "the BEST field guide for North Pacific cetaceans" | 2001-02-07 |
This manual contains the technical information necessary for distinguishing similar species at sea. Numerous black-and-white photos show all important field characteristics. Detailed analysis of the field characteristics separating the various large Balaenopterids is especially useful. Species which have been recorded as accidental are also included. Updating information about the presence of Hyperoodon (or Indopacetus??) in Pacific waters near the equator would be useful, although photos of 'unidentified' Ziphidae are included. This is the only book I take out with me for field cruises.

 | Guide to Marine Mammals of Alaska, Second Edition |
 | "INCOMPLETE:useful for the most common cetaceans in Alaska" | 2001-02-07 |
I have examined this field guide, but find no place for this on my reference shelf. Although user-friendly, this is an incomplete field guide. A number of whale/dolphin genera/species which occur in Alaskan waters are excluded. Although missing from this field guide, I have personally observed northern right whale dolphin and short-finned pilot whales in the Gulf of Alaska during research cruises. Risso's dolphin and false killer whale have been recorded from Alaskan waters and are also excluded from this book. A number of other ceteceans (especially Kogia spp, Stenella coeruleoalba, and several other Mesoplodon spp. especially M. carlhubsii) are potential accidentals in Alaskan waters during warm-water incursions and these are also ignored. Please consider purchase of a complete guide to cetacean identification instead. Try Leatherwood et al.'s "Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises of the Eastern North Pacific and Adjacent Arctic Waters'.
|
 | Sierra Club: Handbook Whales and Dolphins |
 | "a good, concise guide to cetaceans of the world" | 2001-02-07 |
Not a particularly good field guide, as all cetacean genera and species are covered. I grab this book quite frequently when refreshing my mind on the distribution and distinguishing characteristics of a cetacean outside my field of expertise. For those interested in even more meaty fare, pick up Richard Ellis' 'The Book of Whales' and 'Dolphins and Porpoises'. Both books are must have additions to the serious cetologist's book shelf. My field guide of choice for North Pacific field study: Leatherwood et. al. 'Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises of the Eastern North Pacific and Adjacent Arctic Waters: A guide to their Identification'.

 | Harvesting the Heart |
 | "Jodi Picoult is fast becoming my favorite author" | 2001-01-11 |
Although I'm usually a natural history and science fiction buff, I stumbled upon one of Jodi Picoult's other books, The Pact, and as soon as I finished that one, I knew I needed more from this author. I'm impressed with her ability to build characterizations, to use English in an entertaining, engrossing manner, and her story-telling gift matches that of the masters. This is NOT a light romance novel as suggested by other reviewers (I'd never have finished it if that were the case), but has a depth, a flow and a magic that grabs you. I was not able to put this book down until I finished! AND, I am NOT easily impressed by new authors! Try it!

 | Behavior Problems in Dogs |
 | "the BEST canine behavior book in my library" | 2000-08-02 |
When faced with problem behaviors in a rough collie back in the 70's, I read every dog behavior book on the shelves at the time. William Campbell's book was the only reference which addressed the issues I needed to understand. Campbell's description of 'active defense reflex' vs 'passive defense reflex' dogs made all the difference in my understanding of Shasta's behavior. He gave me all the advice I needed to turn this behavior around with very specific instructions which worked to perfection. We went on, after reading this book, to earn a CD in obedience whereas before I could not even touch his body without being bitten ('active defense reflex'). I recommend this book to anyone I contact who is dealing with dog behavior problems and I'm very interested to see how this new edition compares to the one I purchased in the 1970's!

 | Greeting Card Magic With Rubber Stamps |
 | "Mary Jo wins again" | 2000-06-20 |
I have all of Mary Jo's books and each is a treasure. This one is another winnder. Nine chapters cover a number of techniques including paper mosaic with a double-sided tape base, Diamond Glaze 'glazing' on acetate, an image transfer technique using color photocopies and self-adhesive laminate or acetate and shrink plastic tricks & techniques. As usual, Mary Jo's samples are marvelous and each technique is illustrated with step-by-step photos. I HIGHLY recommend this book as well as all of Mary Jo's paper arts books. .

 | Richie Sambora - Undiscovered Soul |
 | "Richie excels as vocalist AND steamin' guitarist!" | 2000-06-20 |
I bought Richie's new album along with Bon Jovi's newest album 'Crush' and Jon Bon Jovi's 'Destination Anywhere'. The last two have been shoved into the 'oh well' pile and Richie's has ended up in the REPLAY over-and-over pile. Makes me wonder how Jon (although I love much of the Bon Jovi music and Jon's 'Blaze of Glory') has ended up as Bon Jovi's lead singer when Richie Sambora outshines him in that regard. Marvelous vocals....as much punch as another fav of mine...Eddie Vedder! WOW!
